A plan for the redistrictinf of the
county inlo commissioner districts was
presented at the meeting of the county
board Monday morning. A resolution :o
roake the changes n submitted by Com
missioner Brunlnsj. In explanation of the
resolution Mr. Brunlng said the changes
were Intended to conform to the altera
tions in ward boundaries recently made.
The resolution was referred to the com
mittee of the whole and will be brought
up at the next meeting. The districts pro
poses In me resolutions am

and Klpventh wards of the city of Omah.i,
as the boundaries of said wards are es
tablished at the date hereof. . .

Detention llome'a First Year.
Mrs. Harriett H. Heller, superintendent
of the detention home, submitted a com
munication covering Jn a general way the
work of the first year at the home and
making suggestions as to Improvements
needed. Bhe calls attention to the fact that
Judge Mack of Chicago upon his recent
visit to Omaha declared the home here was
the best In the country. About 300 different
children have been received Into the Insti
tution during the year and 350 entries made
altogether. She nsks for some repairs on
the building and some new bath fixtures
among other thing. Blie also suggests the
contract with the superintendent be made
for lino a month, she to hire a male as
sistant and use such of her own furniture
as la suitable. The communication was re
ferred to the' committee.
The County Agricultural society sub
mitted Its regular request for an appropria
tion for county fatr purposes. The request
declares the society has conformed with all
of the requirements of the law to entitle
It to the money.
Pay Rolls Mast Be Sworn To.
The board voted to require all county
officials to attach a sworn statement to
pay rolls submitted to the board, certifying
that the services paid for have actually
been performed and noting all vacations
allowed employes. The resolution was in
troduced by Mr. I're and seconded by Mr.
Kennard. It was passed unanimously.
Over the protest of Mr. Brunlng the board
voted 1350 to 8. P. Morris of the Associated
Charities for work done for the county in
looking into requests for charity trans
portation under direction of the charity
committee and investigating charity cases.
The money was allowed as salary at the
rate of 125 a month and will go to the As
sociated Charities, which Is said to be In
need of money at present. Mr. Brunnlng
voted no on roll call.

Owing to inability to procure proper
grades of coal the service of the Omaha
Klectric Lilght and Power company, which
not only supplies Omaha but Council
Bluffs and South Omaha, was much deter
iorated from Saturday until Monday fore
noon. Sunday night it was found neces
sary to discontinue practically all the
street lighting in the three cities and It
was with difficulty that the commercial
service was maintained. By the exercise
of unusual efforts the company succeeded
In getting a supply of anthracite coal
Monday and no further trouble is ex
pected. A representative of the company
said:
"During the last three weeks there has
been a shortage of steam coal in Omaha
due to strikes and expected strikes at the
soft coal mines. Every effort was made
to Insure an adequate supply of fuel, but
the four weeks' reserve supply was. used

of it was much below grade and Insuffi
cient to produce steam. It was impossible
to set a fresh supply of coal suited to
the requirements. The failure of the in
ferior fuel on hand occurred Saturday,
when the latter condition was first dis
covered. Since then all effort was made
to buy anthracite coal with the result that
enough was secured to preclude trouble
in the Immediate future. Using 10 coal
It la obvious that the company Is under
a very unusual expense, but It Is deter
mined to keep Its service fully up to
standard as long as coal at any price can
be secured."

The apprsisals recently made In the con
demnation proceedings for the Omaha, Lin
coln A Beatrice railway are proving un
satisfactory to both sides and appeals to
the district court have been taken by
the railroad and some of the property
owners. '
The railroad has completed arrangements
to appeal from the appraisement of the
property of George Warren Smith, lying
near South Omaha. The appraisers al
lowed him S1.826 for hia share in the prop
erty and the road contends this la too
high. The road also will appeal from
the appraisement of the south half of
block 11, Second addition to Corrigan
Place, South Omaha, belonging to Peter,
Anna. John and Elisabeth Roth and
Esther A. Fuller. The property was valued
at something over $2,000.
It Is understood the Roths also will take
an appeal, claiming Irregularities In mak
ing the valuation. The Roths recently
sought to secure an Injunction to prevent
the road from taking the property under
the condemnation proceedings, but lost in
district court. It Is said they also will
appeal from the appraisement. Seven of
the heirs to the HuRhes' tract, through
hlch the road will run, have perfected an
appeal from the appraisement. In which
they were allowed I60 for the strip asked
by the road.

A conductor and passenger on the Park
avenue line were severely shocked Monday
afternoon, not by any incivility, but by a
good, healthy elrctrlc shock from the trol
ley wire. It was raining heavily at the
moment and the conductor was standing
on the step of one of the open cars and
had Just readied for the passenger's fare.
The passenger had accident 11 jr placed his
foot on a bolt on the floor of the car Im
mediately over the motor and the conductor
was holding to the aide support under the
trolley, so all that was necessary mas for
the two to touch hands, when the current
would be complete and then the fun-would
txgln. It did begin Just as the passenger
handed the conductor his fare. The result
was the conductor nearly fell from the car
and the passenger thought some one had
hit him with a piiedrlver. Fortunately the
contact of their hands was Just partial or
the result might have been serious for both
of them.
