NEW YORK. June l.l.-In its main es
sentials today's stock market was hut a
repetition of those of the early week.
Trading was again in" very moderate
volume, fluctuations here for the most part
exceedingly narrow and the bulk of the
business was. If possible, more profes
sional. Outside Interest there was none, a
lat to which the managers of the large
commission houses reluctantly testified.
Traders and the professional element were
almost unanimously Inclined to take a bear
ish view and the few bulls were less en
thusiastic than they had been recently.
Tho news of the day. while, again lack-1
Ing in specific detail, was not of the char
acter calculated to make fur higher prices.
Crop conditions were the subject of great
est Interest, there being a fast growing
impression that the situation in the western
ststes is not distinctly favorable to large
yield, due allowances being made, how
ever, for the usual scare reports and other
forms of exaggeration. Another unfavor
able Influence was he heaviness of the
United States Steel stock issues. These
stocks have been active recently, but the
pressure directed against them today was
so persistent as to provoke comment. The
downward tendency of these shares was
doubtless accounted for In part. If not en
tirely by the testimony of those In a po
sition to know that the business in all
branches of this Industry except steel rails
la on the decline, as compared with the
unpreoedented activity of the last year.
The few bull points that developed in the
course of the day went bv unnoticed. For
lnatance, the increase of the Pennsyl
vania company's dividend from a 6 to a
6 per cent basis failed to eimke any re
sponse in the shares of the Pennsylvania
Railroad company, although the entire
stock of the first named corporation is
ncio Dy tne railroad.
The reaction which followed the strong
and active opening In the local grain mar
kets was also without effect In the se
curities market. St. Paul was again the
only stock that displayed decided strength.
tne other active Issues, with few excep
tions, showing marked weakness. This
tendency was further pronounced In the
late trading, which was most prominent
for its frequent periods of absolute stag
nation. A few stocks were circulated to
account for St. Paul's further rise, some of
tnem so Impossible as to fall of their own
weight. In the final dealings the selling
pressure became so acute as to wipe out
St. Paul s gain and reduce the general
level materially below the previous day's
closing. The greatest weakness was In
the Hill stocks. Union Pacific, Canadian
Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Chicago Great
Western, Kansas A Texas preferred,
Louisville & Naahville and Brooklyn Tran
sit, with similar weakness In numerous of
the Industrial Issues. The movements of
the foreign markets were generally like
our own In point of weakness. Americans
were Irregular In IOndon and little busi
ness for that account was done here. A
smart advance occurred in rentea at Paris,
with a simultaneous advance In exchange
on London, while at Berlin the private
rate of discount went up a small fraction.
Money conditions were without material
change aside from the better demand from
over-year loans which were made at 64
per cent, though six-month loans were re
ported at 4V per cent. iAte Incidents of
the dav Included (in Increase from 2 to 2'A
per cent on the dividend on the preferred
stock of the Pttfsburg, Chicago. Cleveland
& St. Louis (Panhandle roud) and the pub
lication of the Western Union telegraph's
earnings for the year with June estimated.
The figures Indicated a slight falling off
In net, and a probable decreaae of about
$200,000 In the year's surplus.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $2,470,000. United States bonds were
all unchanged on call.

CATTLE There waa another good run of
cattle here this nforning, which makes the
receipts for the week so far quite liberal.
The quality of the cattle was good, that
is, there were a good many very well-finished
beeves on sale.
Buyers of beef steers appeared to have
orders for good heavy cattle this morning
and some sales of that kind looked a little
stronger than' yesterday. By good heavy
cattle Is meant the kind that Is selling
above $6. This gave the market a little
better appearance than yesterday, but the
general run of the offerings did not sell st
sny more than steady prices, in fact It re
quired a little work In soma cases to get
steady prices for the common kinds. The
trade was late In opening and In a general
wav slow.
The market on cows and heifers did not
show any material change from yesterday.
As hss been the case for some days back
the good dry-lot stuff was In demand and
sold quite freely. On the other hand the
grassy kinds continued very slow and dull,
with prices steadily working lower. The
fact Is with these common grassy cows and
heifers ll Is a good deal of a catch-as-catch-can
market.
There were no stockers or feeders of any
consequence and no change In the market
for that kind of cattle. .

'1 here Is very little trading In the market
here. As a whole dealers are tending to
refuse to nav high prices demanded In

sweep There were more sheep her
this morning than usual of late, but part
of them were single decks and there were
several loads direct to the packer bought
on other markets. The most of the stult
on sale waa on the common order. Tlieie
were, however, some good western lambs
which sold up to $6.86 with a little bunch
of choice native wethers at $6.36 and some
very cnoice native ewes st the same price.
Ihere were several cars of common lamba
which sold st $6.76 and $5.86 with common
ewes at $4.26. The aalea looked strong aa
compared with previous days and the
pricea obtained were very satisfactory lo
owners. It might be well for shippers to
lake note of the fact that eastern inarketa
are In very bad shape and have been
breaking, due to the larger supply of sheep
and lambs coming from the south. Kansaa
City, St, Louis and Chicago are getting a
good deal of this southern stuff. The
northern markets are very poorly supplied
and operators at this point are beginning
to talk that It will be well along In Julv
before the range stock tributary to this
market begins to move at all freelv.
