NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS
Profeniooal Limitation a of Present Market
Still Manifest
LARGE SHRINKAGE IN VOLUME OF SALES
Expected Demand, from the Ont
aid Falls ta Develop and
Crop tandltlens Cans
Anxiety.
NEW YORK. June . The professions!
Ilmltnjlons of the present stock market were
still very manifest today. In fact the slight
evidence of small commission house buying
which was reported yesterday and which
aroused hopes that the fwofeesslonal cam
paign was meeting Its first success In at
tracting outside interest was no longer
perceptible today. The aggregate of the
sales underwet.i a oeclded slulnkage.
The charities. of the market was not ma
terially changed from recently prevailing
conditions. Fewer stocks were picked for
a demonstration to attract attention by
hlarge dealings and rapid advances. More
attention was paid to the action or the
grain markets and the effect of the govern
ment report on the June 1 condition of
wheat was feared for the unfavorable ef
fect It might produce on stocks when it
appears on Monday. The market weakened
quite generally during the first hour on
this account. A better tone developed
when wheat was found to be declining, but
stocks turned downwards again later In
the day. Some points of special strength
among the grangers were due to reports
of good crop conditions along those lines.
Atchison was a notable example. There
waa some strength In the Gould group on
account of the settlement with the Wabash
debenture bondholders and reports of a
large consolidated bond issue in prospect.
The assumption that a more active market
is sonant by some of the large financial in
terests to assist the absorption of new Is
sues in hand was given credit by move
ment In stocks of some companies so situ
ated. The sharp advance In Delaware A
Hudson was accompanied by active dealings
in the convertible bonds on the curb and
application was made to list the bonds at
the Stock exchange.
Tha week's currency movement did not
Indicate a large change In cash reserves
of the banks bu the actual movement, but
the easy tone of call money Indicated a
strong bank statement. The loss reported
on subtreasury operations of ar-sU'OO in
eludes return of government funds ad
vanred to the banks against gold Imports
tn an amount larger than tbst, and as tne
gold has arrived the loss la offset. A small
gain on the express movement with the
interior is also Indicated. Gains made late
lut week figured but sllahtlv In the show
ing of averages upon which the last bank
statement was made up and ' the discrep
ancy la expected to be reotified In tomor
row a statement. A slightly firmer tone was
reported for time money today, due to de
crease In the amounts offering. ' The ster
ling exchange market continued to advance
In response to the easier money conditions
and demand for remittance against mann
ing finance bills was said to be an Import
ant factor in that market. Attention was
given to published expressions by a prom
inent banking official in a tone of warning
against an assumption of security against
niotieyx stringency beyond the Immediate fu
ture, ahd pointing to the requirements still

CATTLB There wn the, i,q i i,.i,, ei
day s run of cuttle, only fortv-nlne fresh
cars beliis: In aleht When thn msrlful
opened. The quality, on nn average, was
not very good, the bulk of the receipts be-
ie vii mr eiiiiiiiiori to meuium order. No
very Important chanarn wan mii1 in ih.
day's trade, conditions being . about the
same as yesterday.
rieet steers or desirable quality were In
fair demand, but the quality was not very
einllrdng and packers' renliiretnent no
sufficiently urgent to put any great amount
of life Into the trade. Ht ill there was a
sufficient demand to effect a reasonably
early clearance, but rjrlcea renuinpH in
about the same notches as yesterday. There
were a couple of loads of cattle here good
enough to bring 35.30. hut the most of those
on sale were tne Kind that are selling at
or below I6.ro. It might be added that the
prices paid today are a little stronger than
last week; that Is. yesterday and the day
before cattle values took on a Utile more
strength, making the murket somewhat bet
ter lor tne ween.
Cows Hiid heifers were in extremely light
supply, the offerings being limited to six
or eight cars. Home of the better grades
looked a little strong, but the market, as a
whole, was without any Important change.
In fact, there were really not enough cows
on sale to make very much of a test of
the market. As Is the case with beef
steers, cows are a little stronger than at
the close of latit week.
There were no stockers or feeders of any
consequence In the yards, but it Is safe to
say that there were as many as there was
a demsnd for. Shippers will understand
that the season Is so far advanced that
very few feeders are wanted, and as noted
yesterday the market Is decidedly lower
than a week or ten days ago.

HOOB-Hogs started out
lust about where they left
ore yesterday
that la, with the general run sellina at
Io 1 jsjJ 7S. with some of the belter loads
up to St) t4.4J'v. As compared altb es-
terday'a market, there waa really very lit
tle change In the situation. The trail
was fairly active at prevailing prices and
fretty much everything In sight sold before
1) clock In the morning.
A glance at the table of average prlcee
will show that the tendency ot values this
week haa been gradually upward, so thst
the hogs sold today 15c higher than at the
close of last week, or "4c higher than last
Friday. Another fart connv-cted with the
week a trade may be seen from a glance
at the table of receipts and that la that
there haa been a heavy falling off In the
rrlvala this week, both as compared witn
last week and with the corresponding week
of a year age.

TRAGEDY OF FLY" TIME
Troobles of tho Man fllin Tried to
riay the Game with Moth
Balls. (
A Chicago druggist, telling of the quaint
characters whom he encounters In his busi
ness, recently said: VLate one afternoon
one of the 'ould sod ambled up to lb
counter. 'Hov yet on thing good to kill
moths?' he asked.
Tea.' aaJd I, 'we have moth balls, th
beat remedy known.'
'Give me tin clntg 'worth, thin,' says he.
;i made up the package and handed It to:
him, and he ambled out again. I had for
gotten all about my customer until about
4 o'clock the next afternoon, when I was
forcibly reminded of the transaction of the
day before. After,! had waited on my
customers In their turn I walked over to
another counter, and waa there confronted
with my moth ball Investor. Without giv
ing me time to make an Inquiry, he said:
" 'Are yes the young moti that sold me.
thlm things ylstiddyT' showing me the ro-.
mains of about half a dosen of th while
oalls. I
"I answered in the affirmative, and also .
Inaulred what th trouble waa, '
" 'Av al the con game. I've run up
against In me tolme, this bates thlm all,'
said he. To think of on y one running a
dacent down town store selling the lolkes
of tl-.lm things to kill moths with, or ony
thtng else, for the matter of that. They
might be all right for playing marbles, but
for klllin' motha, nlver. I jnay not be aa
young as yex are, young mon, but I'm Jlsb
as stlddy, and I want to tell you wan
thing If yes can show me the man or.
woman that can throw wan of thlm balls
quick enough to kill a moth I'll not only
ate Ivlry wan of them yes have In Block,
but I'll say nothing ebout the picture the
ould woman and meself broke In the ferine
little game yet would have us play.' " .
