NEW TORK. June 7. Operations by a
professional organisation were clearly dis
cernible In the atock market today and
made up the largest proportion of the
total dealings. The character of the trad
ing made itself manifest by the concen
trated nature of the orders In Individual
stocks and hy rotation of dealings of this
kind from one quarter of the market to
another. This accounted for the epottr ap
pearance of the market and the Interval
of idleness between spurts of activity In
one stock or another. It thus happened
that some of the most prominent siocka
In the list were not brought Into the move
ment at all, and the market ahowed no
comprehensive movement at any time, suoh
as la evident when a general public interest
Is at work. The stocks which hsd come
Into favor late In the dsy are the ones
generally that ended nearest the top level,
while the esrller favorites were relegated
to a leaa conspicuous place or were carried
backward by the proceas of realising
profits. The result of the day's profes
sional efforts to advance prices was re
garded by Its author with contentment
so far as could be Judged from the per
sistence In the attempt and the expressed
confidence In the success of the campaign
In bringing In ultimately a demand to pro
vide a medium for realising profits. Com
mission houses continue to complain of the
absence of any such public demand and
of dearth of orders for execution In the
market.
The movements of Individual stocks gen
erally had some Item of gossip to accom
pany them, but these lacked official con
firmation and In some esses were clearly
based on surmise. St. Paul wra still bought
on belief In coming stock subscription
rlKhta, and the known approach of a new
lasue of New York Central atock already
authorised made the same explanation
available for the movement In that atock.
Union Pacific was the subject of rumors
of a distribution on Southern Pacific from
which It would benefit by Its large hold
ings. Illinois Central was affected by the
belief in a dispute for control of the prop
erty. Reading and Amalgamated Copper
moved under the Influence of the often
repeated rumors and Inferences.
San Francisco sent another important
assignment of cash to New York by tele
graphic tranafer through aub-treaaury fa
cilities, and foreign exchange ratea made
further progreaa towards the gold export
point, still some distance away, however.
Bankers admit that with a continued flow
of money from this center and easing of
interest ratea aome of the recent large
Imports of gold are likely to be returned
whence they came. The Bank of England
did not meet the expectation that It would
reduce Its official discount rate, and the
report of conditions sufficiently explained
why it did not. Sterling exchange at Paris
and Berlin also moved against Iindon. and
the Paris market was further disturbed by
the prospect of the enactment of an In
come tax law. The further rise in wheat
waa associated with reports of bad weather
conditions. The price of silver suffered a
further violent reaction from the recent ex
treme rise, thus demonstrating thst the
rise was due to an overbought condition
of the market. The realising which waa
more or leaa In evidence all day became
more pronounced at the close of the day
and the closing was heavy.

HOOtt The market opened somerhat
earlier than usual mil morning and was
fairlr active when one underway at an
advance of 6474c aeer yesterday. Some
of the orders at teaet seemed to call for
goes butcher sad hear begs and the ac
tivity on the early market was largely
confined to that clsss. These better grades
of hogs sold largely at 8A37,jtl 40, while
the loads not quite so heavy went mostly
t 3.a. In other words, the hoge sold
largely at 34.36tf4.37H. against 3 r.A
Cift.is) yesterday. A verv large proportion
of all the hogs sold by o clock or soon
after. After the more urgent orders were
filled and the better loada pretty well
culled out the trade slowed up enmewhat,
becoming less active.
It will be noted from the tables at the
head of the column that receipts today fell
short of week sgo by close to fifty cars.
It will also be noted thst there hss been
a falling off In the total for the four days
this week, aa compared with the same
period last week end a year ago. Todsy s
sdvsnce carries the msrket to the hlh
est point touched since May 3ft. when the
average of all the sales reached 38.3s

CA'ITLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were somewhat lighter than last week,
but heavier man two weeks ago. The
quality waa about on a par witn previous
aaya, there being aome pretty good cat
tie among the onerlng.
As was the case esterday, there was
a little more life and snap to the trade
on beef steer. Hueis acted mure as if
they wanted the cattle and were out In
the yards early, bidding Ireely on every
thing desirable In slgnt. Such cattle as
pi need them sold at fully steady prices,
and in spots a Utile stronger. The less
desirable kinds of cattle, on the other
hand, were rather slow sale, holders of
such report'ng the market a slow and
barely soady The big bulk of all the
fat cattie changed nanus In good season,
the same a yesterday.
Cows and heifers were In very light
supply snd the trade not very aclUe,
partly due to the fact that seller seemed
to feel tnat they were entitled to a lit
tle better price and were generally ask
ing more money, while packers did not
seem inclined to put on anything. There
were, however, so few cow and heifer
In sight that the offerings were cleaned
up In very decent season.
A ha been the cane every day recently,
the receipt of stocker snd feeuera were
very light, there being hardly enough of
anything in eight to make a real test of
the market. This ha been the case for
some little time back and no great change
has been noted In the market from day to
day. However, when a comparison ia
made with the salea of laat week It can
be readily seen tnt price have been
gradually falling off until both stocker
and feeder are considerably lower. This
has been due to the two-fold fact that
the demand Is light and that the condi
tion of the fat cattle market has dis
couraged anything like free buying of
atnekers aid feeders.

SHE tut The sneep trade might best be
desorlbed as a good, strong and active
market. Everything in sight was disposed
of before 8 o'clock tn the morning and at
firkea entirely satisfactory to the selling
merest. The first grass sneep of the
season put in an appearance this morn
ing and met with ready sale at a good
price. They were Utah wether of vry
decent quality, but coarse, and brought
6.H. A double deck of fed wethers,
with about twenty-five ewe on them,
old at 3400. Some pretty fair Mexican
lamb went at 34.30, with good westerns
as high as 3-36.
The sheep and lamb market at thl
point I In a good, healthy condition, a
would be indicated from the price noted
above. The receipt continue very light,
but no more so than expected, while the
demand Is fully equal to or tn excess of
the srrlvals. - -
