At the close the July ueilvery showed a net loss of Ho. Corn was up Vic. Oats were down U'Ao. Provisions wero off HmjTHc Sentiment In the wheat pit was bearish the entire day and a large amount of long wheal wa thrown upon the market. The principal support came from shorts and was not sufficient to prevent a considerable decline In . prices. Weather conditions throughout, the I nlted States were favor able to the growing crop. In the southwest, where harvesting Is In progress the weather v.as clear, while In the northwest there VV'lSi2,,n"- In Missouri and thT)hlfHey the weather bureau re ported beneficial showers. News from abroad was also bearish. The market at Liverpool was dull and depressed because t f a poor shipping demand, cheaper Argen tina estimates and a record breaking crop in Jiull. Little excitement was manifested In the closing of the Mar dealing. Trad es -in mo upuon wss light and because of moderate profit-taking the price dropped 2Hc a bushel, declining from 84Vfcc. the !n'n5.p,'' to b"y- The close was at 'c' The market had a somewhat steadier tone during the last hour because of cover ing by shorts. July opened a shade to SSc lower at 82', , so,d , S1S t.klVsc and closed at 82i:4c. Clearances of wheat and nour were- equal to 413.000 bushes. IVImary receipts were 4o7,ooo bushels, compared with 2O6.0O0 bushels for the corresponding day one year ago Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported leceipls of 279 cars, against 1S4 cars last week and 2iS0 cars one year ago. The corn market was easier at the open ng becaiiHe of local receipts, which were lugcr than had been expected. The mar ket, however, quickly rallied and held firm for the remainder of the session. There was an active general demand for the greater part of the day. while offerings were light. An advance of He to Vc In the price of rash corn strengthened the market materially. The close wss firm. July opened Ho to e lower, at 4Kc to c, advanced to 49V.C and closed at 4S-U 'J?c- kocal receipts were 608 cars, with wi ears of contract grade. Oats were dull and easy. Ideal westher . r fown crop was the chief bear ish Influence, although the weakness of wheat had some effect. July opened Uc lower, at 3S4C. sold between S3Sc and 8$c and closed at 3Ha 3&T,e. Local receipt were 213 cars. Hog receipts at the principal western packing centers were considerably In creased today and consequently provisions opened rather weak. FEATURE Advance In This Stock Une to Fin Showing; of Annnnl Itepert nn Rasaer of Contest far Control. ' NEW YORK. May 81. -Interest In today stock market wa confined to special stocks. The market as a whole waa unchanged from the dull and listless trading of lest week. Some of the movements In special stocks had nominal csuses in the circulation of rumors regarding plsns for the com panies Others were without explanation beyond the character of the buying. The Identity of some of th large operatore In the storks newly active was the same as the active .'actors In some of the loading movement last week. This led to the asumptlon that the dealing were designed to sustain the market during Its period of dullness. Such was the effect of toder 1 special movements, while they were occur Ing. The effect wa very moderate even then and lost some of its force afterward, when a drooping tone developed Illinois Central wss conspicuous In the advance and led to a general movement in the southern group. The Impreeelon that friction exlts among street cspltallst Influential In Illinois Central and thst a contest for control I a possibility and the report of the road' net eernlnirs for April showing an expansion of nearly 87 per cent ihm tnr th nrenedln Artrll helped this group. In the realm or rumor aiso was tho suggestion that in extensive com bination of Southern Rallroed Interests I In contemplation. The strengthening of St. Paul wss connected with suppositions regarding the plans for financing Its rseiflc coast extension. It .was asserted thst buy ing of the stock was based upon knowledge that arrangements had been completed for securing adequate resources for completing that work. The Jump In Consolidated One was caused by a court decision which de feated a purpose to prevent the company from collecting more than an SO cent rate pending the conclusion of Its suit to test the constitutionality of the law. Money market developments were of some Importance, but seemed to have light effect In the stock speculation. San Francisco again sent heavy remittances to New York by telegraph through the subtreasury, the day s total reaching $3,400,000. At the eme time ome $1,000,000 wss sent from New York to Canada, representing the funds at tracted here during the stringency due to the drain to San Francisco. Condition In the foreign exchange market were greatly confused by the contradictory Information regarding the United State treasury atti tude In the policy of aiding gold Import by government deposits. Finally the de posit of bonds for the withdrawal of $1,600, 000 by the National City bank was allowed on the ground that the arrangement for the gold to be Imported antedated the decision to discontinue the practice for the present. This decision I explained a be ing due to the present sufficient unplle for the money market doing away -with th emergency condition which prompted the adoption of the practice In the first place. Money was freely offered on call and espe cially by the bankers concerned In the Pennsylvania note Issue and the ton wae easy In spite of the preparations for the June psvments and for the Chloago North western stock subscription payments to morrow. Pennsylvania was heavy through out and weakened sharply at one time with the circulation of a rumor that the placing of bonds In Pari hsd fallen through. The denial of this rumor failed to rally the tock and St. Paul reacted when tho direc tors adjourned without any announcement of a project for financing 'It extension. The effect of these two Incident wa to Impair the advance and to make tho clos ing tone easy. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, pa' value. $2,430,000. More than that the quality was good, there being a large nussber of very well finished beet steers on sale.', it will also be noted from th table of receipt that the arrival thle week aro falling considerably short of last- week and ot a year ago. and etill thr are too many cattle coming to keep tbe market In good condition. The trad on beef steer opened very low and dulltand It was 10 o'clock before any business of consequence waa trans acted. Seller who happened to have eomethlng that just suited buyers, cr something that was wanted to kill out. Im mediately reported that they were able to sell to very good advantage, being com pelled to take oft very little from yester day' figures. Such cases, however, wore rare, tbe general market being right at lOo lower, than yesterday. Th fao, wa that In som Instances before th close salesmen whs happened to have cattle that did not seem to And apeclal favor In buyer' eye had to lake off even more than 10c. It was, a a matter of faot, a slow and lower market, and as such un satisfactory to th selling Interests. Cow and heifer war In fair eupply, but they, too, sold In most case a much a 10c lower, although som aalesrrwsn who happened to hav vry nloe heifer or wU finished cow thought that they did not take off that much. For anything that was not right good, however, th market wa afely 10c lowr. 8 Lookers and feder were, a nual.
