Sentiment In the wheat pit today waa
bearish from the opening to the close.
The main factor In the situation waa wet
weather In the southwest. According to
the weather bureau rain had fallen during
the night throughout Kansas, Nebrask
and' other portions of the winter wheat
belt, breaking the drouth in that, section
of the country. The weakness waa In
creased by a forecast of still more rtin
tonight. A sharp break In th price o
the May delivery following th decline of
yesterday also weakened prices In general
There wa free selling by local longs all
day and the market received Ita main sup

sold oft to 47c and cloaed at 474C. Local
receipts were 392 cars with 277 cara of
contract grade.
Trading In oata wa ative and the tone
waa weak. The decline In wheat and corn
wa the chief depressing Influence. Cash
houses and local long were active seller,
while commission house were the prin
cipal buyer. July opened ifflHe to VtfHc

and B3t331tc and closed at 33c. Local
recelpta were 160 cars.

NEW TORK. May 13 There wa a de
cided Increase In the amount Of butnea
done at the Stork exchange today, but
selling ordrrs made up a large proportion
of the expansion in srtlvlty, snd prices
suffered accordingly. The decline In prices
seemed the result in large part of the sus
pense Involved for speculative holders of
stocks in a prolonged period of dullness
and sluggishness. A psralysi of specula
tive demand leans almost Inevitably to a
slow, sagging tendency owing to the nor
mal orferlngs or stocks to be marketed
even In the quietest periods. Speculators
dread the slow shrinkage or dlsnppearanre
of profits In such a murket. Today's sell
ing was supposed to be by "tired holders"
of this das, who have become discouraged
over the prosptct of any early revival of
speculative activity.
New of the day was not regarded as
adverse to value and some Item were fa
vorably Interpreted. The progress of the
Investigation Into the coal carriers wa
not one of these. The resumption of the
Inquiry today may have been responsible
for a feeling of despondency on the part
of speculators. The graft disclosures
reaching into the railroad world are
dreaded for their effect on public senti
ment Just as were the life Insurance ex
posures, with Just cause In the latter case,
a waa proved by the event. Pennsylvania
stocks themselves show seme resistance to
the general depression In the market, In
contrast with their recent persistent weak
ness even while other stocks were strong.
This was attributed partly to the practical
confirmation of rumor current for sev
eral days of a fresh bond flotation by the
company In Paris, estimates of the amount
reaching as high as $60,000,000. No details
were obtainable of the term for which the
new Issue Is to run or the rate of Interest
which It Is to bear. Sentiment respecting
the huge borrowings of the Pennsylvania
wa not materially altered by thla new de
velopment. But the fact that resources
were found In a foreign market was re
garded with great satisfaction for the relief
afforded to the domestic market. The
home market Is believed to be secured
from any further early demand by this
company and the operation will serve also
to fund some of the large Indebtednesa of
this market to Paris and defer the neces
sity for Its liquidation. A hopeful augury
was drawn from the event, for the chances
of French participation In future American
capital Issues since the overcoming of the
obstacles in the Bourse regulation which
have prevented dealing In American securi
ties In Paris heretofore argues a propitious
sentiment on tne part or tne t rencn nnan
clal power to the new departure. A the
principal reserve of canltal at this time
are lodged In France, a wllllngnes to ven
ture them In American securities may be
of far-reaching consequence to the Im
portant financial projects In contemplation
In this country and which threaten to be
hampered by the excessive demands upon
our own supplies of capital.
Some of today a price movement pointed
to quarters where these needs are to be
met. The weakness of New York Central
was attributed to the new stork Issue Im
pending. Clrcumstanc. j reports were cur
rent of a forthcoming l&o.ono.OOO temporary
note issue by St. Paul to finance It Pa
cific coast extension. The official dis
claimer of the report of an early United
States Steel bond Issue' was coupled with
admission of the possibility of an ultimate
resort to Tnis means or securing resources
to complete the company' great Indiana
plant. Hopeful sentiment prevailed as to
banking operations In San Francisco. The
breaking of the drouth In the southwest
did not help the market, since the previous
crop damage report had but little effect
on stock. The reduction In the Imperial
Bank of Germany' official discount rate
was of but moderate Influence either In
foreign or here. Reading and Pennsylvania
made centers of resistance to the decline
and of the partial rally whirh followed
and which was fairly well held at the
close.
Bond were easy; total sales, par value,
$1,795,000. United State bonds were un
changed on call. '

CATTLE Yesterday' very large run of
came was lolioweu by heavy receipt
again today, making (he run for the first
three days of the week exceptionally
large. Thla. together with the fact that
other markets have been declining, cauaed
a atlll further reduction In value. Aa
waa the case yesterday the trade, a a
whole, wa alow and It waa late In the
day before a clearance waa effected.
Beef ateera. which constituted the bulk
of the receipt, were generally 10c low-sr
today and all 01 losazoc lower man tne
close of last week. The trade was slow
at the decline, aeller being backward
about making further rcductlona and
fighting against every encroachment of
the buying Interests. The result wa
that It was 10 o'clock or after before the
trsdlng was really under way, and past
midday before a clearance was effected.
8c me Idea of the amount of decline may
be had from an examination of the repre
sentative sales below, from wrlch It will
be noted that the greatest part of the
rattle are seljlng below 35.00, whereas
no longer ago than last Friday over ono
half sold at 36.00 and above.
Cows and heifers were also alow and
considerably lower. During the first two
days this week the row market did not
fffer as much a steer, but there seemed
to be a feeling among buyers this mora
Ing that they had been paying too much
for their cow stuff, and the wa- thoy
were bidding they seemed to be anxious
to catch up with the downward move
ment on teer.
There were few stocker among the re
ceint tedav. but not very many feeder.
So few cattle of thl description have
been coming this week that they nave
not felt the severe break tn fat crttl. a
might have been expected had the receipts
been larger. In fact, nice little stocker
are selling Just about a well a they did
laat week, but aa a matter of course n
great number would be wanted at sucn
price.

SHEEP As has been the case all' the
week the market at this point was poorly
supplied with both sheep and lamb. At
th same time there was the usual active
demand, so that the trade wa In a good
healthy condition, everything In sight be
ing disposed of at an early hour In the
mornlnar.
in spite or tne iact mat lamos at vni-
cago yesterday were generally 16ozc
lower, closing fully 25c lower, with sheep
lotjioc lower, the market nere was in a
very satisfactory condition. inateaa 01
following after Chicago prices it remained
fully steady, with the trade active. Good
Iowa red western lambs sola aa nign as
6.7, with the less desirable kinds from
that price down. Two double decks of
the M. M. Coad ewes from Fremont
brought 36.(6, while Berry's ewes, the
clean-up of the winter's feeding, aold at
36.60, which 1 a nign a iney nave ania
at any tlm thl season. These and all
ether prices paid were very satisfactory
to owners ana only eervea to prove tne
assertion made above to the effect that
the market waa In very satisfactory condition.
The sheep market In general Is be
ginning to show the effects of the "spring
madness." a disease which attacks sheep
men about this season every year. It
manifests Itself In an overpowering de
sire to ahlp everything In the country to
Chicago, at the aame time atarvlng the
river markets. The outcome or tne
disease I alwgy the aame the Chicago
market break: baaiy unaer exceaaive re
celpta and forcea the river market down
ward, thu cauaing a heavy loss to heep
feeder. Yesterday the five leading mar
kets reported 81. 60S sheep and lambs re-
ceivea. ur mis numoer unicago nna
32.000 sheen snd lambs, or over one-half
of the total number.
With such overwhelming receipts Chicago
lambs closed 250 lower, with sheep 1016c
lower. If the receipts could be more equally
distributed among all the markets trouble
of that kind could be avoided, hut that
seems to be a difficult thing to secure In
th spring time, when "spring msdness"
once take hold of aheep shlppera.
