Mrs. Etta Held, living at IWM Tostevln street, received what It is expected will prove fatal Injuries early yesterday morn ing by being struck by a Great Western switch engine at the Tostevln street cross ing. She was thrown to the grouhd and the wheels of the locomotive passed over both legs, grinding them off at the knee. Mrs. Held, who is 23 years of age and the mother of three small children. Is the wife of Henry Held, an employe of the E. Children Manufacturing company. The unfortunate womsn is said to have been somewhat deaf, and to this is attrib uted the accident. Bhe waa Teturnlng from a grocery store to her home with a number of packages in her s.ma and to reach her house nearby had to cross ths tracks of the Great Western at the Toste vln street crossing. The switch engine, which was In charge of Switch Foreman E. Hanrlln and Engineer James II. Miller, was backing and Hannln had gone ahead about ICO yards to turn a switch. Both saw Mrs. Held about to cross the tracks. Hannln called out to her while Engineer Miller blew the whistle vigorously. When he noticed that the woman apparently paid no attention to the signals Miller re versed his engine, but too late' to avoid striking the woman. Mrs. Held was car ried ten or twelve feet before she fell be neath the wheels. Mrs. Held waa first carried to her home Just south of the tracks and then as soon as an ambulance could be secured re moved to the General hospital, where her condition from the shock snd loss of blood decided the attending physicians to defer attempting an operation. Those who were attracted to the scene of the accident state that but for the foresight of Foreman Hannln' the unfor tunate woman might hare almost bled to death before medical assistance could have been secured. As soon as he perceived the nature of Mrs. Held s injuries he bound up tightly with bandages- the stumps of ths limbs so aa to check the flow of blood to a considerable extent. C. Konlgsmacher, cashier of the Com mercial National bank., who was driving Into the city from his farm in Lewis township, witnessed the accident. Hla statement corroborates those of Foreman Hannln and Engineer Miller that they, did everything possible to warn the woman of the approach of the engine. Mrs. Held succumbed to her injuries at t o'clock last night. Coroner Treynor last night had not fixed the time for holding an inquest, tout t it will probably be some time today. , solid Comfort. As to the present. It Is needless for me to quote any figures, for any person can count up the standing of the candidates Just as well as I csn. I believe, however, the next few days will show a considerable change in the figures and the change will not be In Mr. Cummins' favor." This waa the answer given by Hon. George D. Mr. Perkins arrived In the city about 11:80 In the morning from Walnut, where he addressed, with State Senator Saun ders of this city. Monday night a large and enthusiastic gathering of republicans. Regarding the Issues In the campaign, Mr. Perkins said he felt that the Issue raised by Governor Cummins aa to the railroads had been practically disposed of by congress in the recent railroad rate bill. The action of congress, he contended, had eliminated the railroad question from the campaign. He said he deplored the strife in the party in this state, as there never waa a time. In his opinion, when there was less occsslon for party dlacofd than at present. "I have aought In every way to prevent it. Some one, however, Is re sponsible for It, but I am not that one," he said.
