OMAHA. Mar 22. 1
Bom shower In Kansas and Missouri, a
forecast of nr for tomorrow and a less
urgent cash market caused a .weakness In
wheat today and price were off a rent at
one time. Opening price were unchanged
and cables were only c higher. Price
were around the opening until the forecast
came and the market turned weak, with
practically no reaction until July reached
lc below yesterday. Early sellers took
riroflt on the decline and the market rai
led He, with a loss of c for the day.
Corn prices were off nearly a cent, though
there was a alight recovery at the close.
Receipts were larger than estimates. Local
elevator people aay they bought more corn
at last night's bids than at any time on
the crop. 1-arge receipts with present poor
export trade would cause a lower market.
Oats were weak In sympathy with gen
eral market and on reports of showers.
July wsa e lower.
Bradstreet's total wheat decrease was
2.707,000 bushels, corn decrease 6oT.000 buaii
ela and oats decrease l.ftW.OuO bushels. A
(able from India says wheat la being offered
more freely and shipments are expected lo
Increase.
Primary wheat receipts were 307.000 buh
ela and shipments 181. ton bushels, against
receipts last year of 287,000 bushels and
shipments of 803,000 bushels. Corn recelpls
were 804.000 bushels and shipments 815.ft"0
bushels, agalnet receipts last year of 42f,000
bushels and shipments of 152.OH0 bushels.
Clearances were 167,000 bushels wheat. 2,tKl
barrels flour, 22,000 bushels corn and 25.OU0
bushels oats.
Liverpool closed unchanged to 4d higher
on wheat and 4'64d higher on corn.
From the Inter Ocean: "One of the wheat
bulls figures that there Is sn open Interest
In May wheat of oyer .000,00 bushels, with
only eight more business days. Including
todsy. One house Is ssid to have l.OOn.no
bushels. There Is also the Waterman line.
The contract available for delivery Is less
than 1.000.000 bushels. Wrenn has been the
buyer for two weeks and pace moves up
steadily. Yesterday's top price was 864
104c above the recent low figure. The
advance has been on a light trade. Some
of the New York longs who went out of
May and Into July have a profit on their
holdings, while the highest priced pur
chase for May this year showed a loss of
only 24e at yesterday'a best figures."

. The' wheat market . today waa 1
"weather market," almost exolusivel
From the opening to the close sentiment
was bearish because of the prospect of
more favorable weather for the growing
crop. A fairly ateady tone prevailed at
the opening because of an active demand
by shorts, but this waa soon satisfied
and the market weakened. The predic
tions of the weather bureau that rains
will fall generally throughout the wheut
belt tonight and tomorrow brought on
increased weakness. A decline or more
than 2 cents In the price of wheat for

May option was caused by llbeil proflt
taklng, which waa Induced by ,"ie quite
general belief that the leading shorts In
that option had made settlementa over
night. During the day a number of dam
age reports were received from the south
west, but these failed to offset the Im
proved weather condltlone. The market
closed easy. July opened a shsde lower
to a shade higher, at 83S8JC. aold
up to 8J7C and then declined to 12 Sc.
The cloae was at 8:"4 4jJc. Clearances
of wheat and flour were equal to $288,700

by Bradstreet's decreased 2.700,000 bu.
Primary recelpte were 207.000 bu., agalnat
187,600 bu. for the corresponding date
on year ago. Minneapolis, Puluth and
Chicago reported receipt a of 248 cars,
against 204 cars laat week and 182 cars
The prospect of wet Weather through
out the middle west weakened the corn
market. Several leading longa were free
sellers and offerings were taken chiefly
by commission houses although there was
some covering by shorts. The market
closed easy. July opened a shade lower

recelpta were 4 63 cars with 2:6 cars it

their position. With their ability to meet
claims of depositors promptly demonstrsted
a return to New York of some of the rash
forwarded to 8an Francisco Is expected.
The money outlook abroad seems not en
tirely clear either. London and Paris mar
kets both were lethargic tod.iy on pros
pects of tight money, although the Berlin
market was cheerful. In the hope that the
Herman Imperial bank would reduie Its
offlclnl discount rate tomorrow. Money
brokers reported some diminution in the
supply of funds offering on time In this
market and . rates for the longer period
were firm.
The weekly bulletin of crop conditions
Issued by the weather bureau, with Its
showing of Insufficient moisture In the
winter wheat region of the southwest, was
not helpful to stocks, although the whent
market was Inclined to react from Us re
cent strong advances on Immediate reports
of showers today. The price of copper In
London made a recovery from yesterday'a
sharp break, but without helping the copper
group in this market. The one Incident of
Interest In the msrket wsa the further rise
in the high-priced coalers. Lackawanna
added 10 points to Its record price and sold
at 650, thus measurably reducing the dis
tance necessarv to the fulfillment of the
? respective prediction of 1.000 for this stock,
or which the movement In the group Is
associated In public estimation. Reports
were current, however, of an Intention on
the part of these cnmpanlee to divest them
selves of ownership of coal mining prop
erties to comply with the tendency of recent
judicial decisions and of the shaping or
legislation. This would Involve. It was
Inferred, a distribution of these assets to
stockholders. It was pointed out also that
the rise In these stocks made an additional
attraction for convertible bonds of some of
the comnanles which are now In the mar
ket. The stiffness of the coalers served
onlv partly to sustain the market ngainst
the drop of prices Inevitable In a market
where the buvlng demand Is torpid. Prices
gave way rather generally at the list and
the closing was easy.

CATTLE The receipts of cattle this
morning were very heavy, but Just how
heavy no one knew, as a very considerable
proportion of the receipts was reported
back of washouts. There were, however,
enougli cattle lr. the yards already when
the market opened to make a big showing.
While there waa a sprinkling of cow stuff
the big end of the receipts consisted of
corn-fed .steers.
Buyers were disposed to go slow and wait
for Information both as to the condition of
other markets and as to the extent of the
local receipts. The result was a very slow
and late opening and the forenoon was
well advanced before business of any con
sequence waa transacted. When the cattle
did aell they went at prices generally 10c
lower than yeateiday. At the same time
there were cases where salesmen who hap
pened to have something especially desir
able, such as handy light cattl?. thought
that they were able to secui-e steady or
nearlv steady prices. For every case of
that kind, however, there were other cases
In which salesmen thought that If anything
thev had to take off more than 10c, this
latter condition being especially noticeable
in connection with rough finished cattle.
Cows snd heifers were slow, packers evi
dently figuring on buying them lower.
Still well finished cows and heifers which
Just happened to strike a buyer's fancy
did not aell very much different from yes
terday. Anything that did not especially
appeal to buyers was lower and slow sale.
There were a few stockers here, but no
foeders of any consequence In sight. There
were not. in fact, enough cattle of this
kind to cut any material figure In the dny's
operations. Such cattle as were offered
generally sold at what looked Ilka steady
prices.

HOGS No one knew exactly where they
were at In the hog yards this morning ow
ing to the uncertainty regarding receipts.
Everything eemfd to Indicate that the run
would be very large, but Just how large
It was hard to say, as ctarhtv-five enrs of
stork were reported back ot a washout on
the Northwestern Just west of Fremont.
The fact that no one knew whether they
were hogs or caltl or whether thry would
he In time for today's market added to the
uncertainty. Packers' repreeetiia(l es took
't for granted that the run would be large
and they were evidently determined to he
on the safe side, hence started out bidding
ftillr 5c lower than yesterday. In other
words, their bids were on the basis of Sd 20
for the general run of hogs, the popular
price yesterday having been IS. 16. Sellers
also seemed to think It best to be on the
safe side and hence were refusing to make
the concession on the ground that If It
should become necessary to take off they
could do so on the close Just as well as on
the opening. The result was that the fore
noon dragged along with nothing being
done and the trade being practically at a
standstill. When the hogs did sell they
went largely at 16 22't. or 2H- lower than
yesterday. Everything was sold by 11
o'clock.
The weakness developed today carries the
market to the lowest point touched since
Mav 9. when the average of all the hogs

sheep trade at this
point us usual. The more desirable kinds
of lambs sold early and the market was
reported as steady at the opening, although
not very active, l-ater on advices from
eastern points were not quite so reassuring
and this coupled with the fact that a con
siderable proportion of the offerings did
not seem to appeal very strongly to buyers
made the close slow and If anything a
little bit easier then yesterday. The H. B.
Rltchey Iambs, which were the best here,
sold at 26.86. which was the same as yes
terday's top. The remainder of the larr.ha
sold from that price on down, some feeders
selling at lo.zb.
Aa was the case yesterday there were no
sheep or ewes here of any consequence, the
receipts consisting almost entirely of lambs
There was, however, one hunch of ewes
good enough to bring 16.75.
