He split higher than Saturday for July.
During the first part of the session the
corn market waa quiet and Inclined to be

cash demand was a little slow. After the
visible supply showed a decrt-ase of more

CHICAGO. May a. Absence of rain In
he southwest waa the chief reason today
or a strong tone In the local wheat mar
;et. At the close wheat for July delivery
tas up Sc. Corn was up Vglc. Oata
howed a gain of ftc. Provisions were
Hloo higher. ...
i he market waa strong all day and the
volume of trading was large, the demand
"or wheat being general. Reports from all
ver the winter wheat belt ahowed the gen
.ial situation to be unchanged and that
alns are greatly needed to prevent aerioua
lamuge to the growing crop. In the north
west It waa claimed that too much rain
fiad fallen in many sections. The weather
ureau predicted showers for tonight
:hrcughout Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa,
out, despite this forecast, sentiment In the
wheat pit continued bullish all day. A de
crease of J.323,0uO bu. In the visible supply
.-ompari d with a decrease of 1.741.010 bu. one
fear ago aided In holding the market to a
ilglt pitch. During the last half hour there
was considerable profit-taking and part of
he gain which had been made earlier In
:he day was ktst. The close, however, waa
Irm. July opened unchanged to
higher, at 83V(iMSo. advanced to 84Vc
ind closed at &3Vu83c. Clearance of
wheat and flour were equal to 20,700 bu.
The amount nf breadstuff on passage In
creased 729,000 bu. 1-Tlmary recelpta were
SlO.noo bu., against 4117,000 bu. for the corre
sponding day one year ago. Minneapolis,
Duluth and Chicago reported recelpta of
191 cars, against 164 cars last week and 844
cars one year ago.
Despite greatly Increased local receipts
the corn market waa strong throughout the
session, being Influenced to a great extent
by the strength of wheat a decrease of
M.'.noo bu. In the visible supply and a
marked decrease In public stocks In store
auKutnented the bullish feeling. Shorts were
the chief buyers. During the day prices
advanced more than 1 cent, but part of this
r:aln waa lost late In the session on resili
ng. The market closed strong. July
opened unchanged to c higher, at 47',:?
4730, advanced to nc and closed at 4$4
ffV,c. Vocal receipts were 811 cars, with
128 cars of contract grade.
Oata were strong for the greater part
of the day. There waa a slight reaction
early In the session because of selling,
which was generally credited to northwest
ern houses, but the market quickly re
entered. Shorta and commission houses
were the best buvers. July opened Hfac
higher, St 83i3:tHc. sold off to 334c and
rallied to 34Ho. The close was at 34c. Local
recelpta were 120 cars.
After an easier opening, due to 10(315c
. decline In the price of live hogs, the pro
vision market showed a decldely firmer
tendency. Buying of lard and rlba by a
local packer was" the main reason for the
firmness. At the close July pork was up
16c, at S1S.T2V4- I-ard was up TV. at $8.65.
Ribs were Va higher, at $.0fW9.074.
Frttmated receipts for tomorrow are:
fh'i-i, IS rsrs: corr. 446 cars; oata, 1S7
cars: hogs. 18.000 head.

causes vere 01 the slightest eOrct on tne
general list, which drilled aimlessly In one

glsn price currents running In opposite at
lections at tne same time. Their was tin
ebullition on the hlgn-prlced anthracite
coalers of a kind familiar in that quarter
of the stock list. This was In response to
a proclamation from a highly successful
speculator In that group ot siocks of ma
estimate of probable future prices to oe
touched by these stocks. Distillers' Securi
tits rose on the reports of proispects fur
the enactment of ihe free alconol bill.
American Locomotive was effected by ru
mors In circulation of a possible merger
with the (ienersl Electric company. Thea
are the principal examples of the market t
features. The general tone, so far as It
was discernible at all, was ruiner heavy,
aa is almost Inevitably the case In a market
of such limited demand for stocks. Penn
sylvania stock waa apparently In good sup
ply and the course of the investigation of
that company and Its heavy bor-owlng kept
It under some degree of pressors.
The money market continued easy and
was dull, the principal inquiry being for
funds carrying over the end of the year.
While 6 per cent was reported bid for this
maturity, money brokers reported that the
most or the buainesa was done at 6 per
cent. Transfers to San Francisco through
the sub-treasury again amounted to over
11,000,0110. Aa the resumption of banking is
expected to be made In the wrecked city by
tne middle or this week, this movement Is
not expected to run much further and an
early return movement Is looked for when
the banks have opened and satlafled the de
mands of depositors. Ixmdon discounts
yielded somewhat today and the Bank of
England secured the supplies of gold avail
able In the l-ondon Market. Ihe move
ment of sterling exchange In New York
did not point to any early resumption of
the gold Import movement. There were
sharp reactions in the London markets
for copper and tin and the copper group
of securltlea felt some sympathetic effect
owing to the extent to which the rise In
the metals has affected the speculation in
the stocks of that group. The wheat mar
ket showed some speculative operations,
based on the dry weather In the crop re
gions, but this was of small influence in the

...4,013 i,M 4,iJ3
receipts thla morning,
wmcn numDerea close to 1.0 cars, were
nmau ior a Monday at this point as com
pared with the last three week. Re
celpta, however, at most other market
points were heavy for a Monday, so that
the total number of cattle on aaie at the
leading markets waa large.
Chicago, under the influence of the big
run at that point, sent out reports early
Indicating a alow and 10c lower market,
with the result that the trade at thla point
opened slow, and It waa late before a
clearance wss effected. As the demand
at this point waa good, while the supply,
aa noted above, was not very large, sales
men who happened to have something espe
cially desirable reported that they were
abls to secure steady or very close to
steady prices. This wss true more espe
cially of the lighter weight cattle. Heavy
cattle, on the other hand, were not only
slow, but buyers seemed determined to
take off on them enough to bring thla
martlet In line with Chicago, and they
succeeded In buying them aome lower. Per
hapa to call the trade at thla point ateady
to loo lower would cover the altuation
about as near aa would be possible in
words.
Cowa and heifers were In light supply
and good demand, so that in spite of the
fact that beef ateers were lower the cow
trade aa a rule was fairly active at fully
steady prices. Most of the cows and heif
ers sold In good season.
Only a few stockers and feeders were of
fered for sale and the market remained
In about the same condition aa at the
close of last week. There arss no material
change In prices, the few loads here selling
about steady.
