CHICAGO, May 19. The continuance of dry weather In the aouthwest waa the chief reason for strength today in the local wheat market. At the close wheat for July delivery was up H'gtyc. Corn waa off Vo. Oats were up Vio. I'rovlsions were a shads o 10c lower. The wheat market was slightly easier at the opening because of selling by pit trad ers who were Influenced by reports of slight rains In Kansas and Missouri. These offerings, however, were readily taken by shorts and commission houses and the mar ket soon became firm, remaining so until the close. Receipts In the northwest were small and the market at Liverpool was steady notwithstanding the decline of yes terday on the local exchange. I-ate in the day the market was strengthenud by dam age reports In the southwest, the largest number of which came from Kansas, where the crop is said to be deteriorating rapidly because of dry weather. Fresh reports were also received telling of ruat In Okla homa. Theea advlcea, together with the strong markets at 8t. Louis and Kansas City, had considerable effect on local traders. The market closed strong. July opened a shade lower to a shade higher at s2Hc to S-'So, sold at SCHifi-Ho and ad vanced to MHic Final quotations were at (3c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to lM.OiM bu. Primary receipts wers Jtu.uoe bu., compared with 284.0CO bu. for the corresponding day one year ago. Min neapolis, Luluth and Chicago reported re ceipts of lt4 cars, against 102 cars laat weak and 110 cars a year ago. Sentiment In the corn pit was bearish, but an official forecast of frost tonight In Illinois had a steadying effect on prices. Cash Intereats and commission houses were free sellers and shorts were the chief buy ers. An Increased movement and the ex cellent grading of the li cal receipts wt rj tha main bearish Influences. Prtmarv re ceipts today were 433.miO bu., against i32,iifrt bu. for the corresponding day a year ago. Tha market closed steady. July opened a shade to Vo lower at 47lo to 4VV-;7-bc. sold between 47V: and 47V- and closed at 7ViO. Local receipts were Ua cars with ltil of contract grade. Dry weather, together with the predic tions of frost, caused a strong market all day in the oats pit. Shorts and commis sion housea were active huyera, while the selling waa scattered. July opened a shad" lower at KTo and advanced to 33fco, where It closed. Local receipts were li cars. An easier tone prevailed In the provi sions market and trading waa very quiet. Pit traders sold moderately because of a Bo decline In the price of live hons. A local paoker waa a fair purchaser of July ribs and this aleadled tha market somewhat for other products. At the close July pork waa off fl't7V at tli.STH- Lard was down lua at S8 ttfLa, Ribs were a shade lower at Is 9TH9 HO. Kansas City 562 other buyers 8 Totals W 8 352 653 CATTLE Receipts of cattlo this week have been quite liberal, the total footing up about 18,000 head, whlcH was not quite so heavy as last week but about the same as the previous week. Thesa figures, however, show a little gain as compared with a year ago. Tho markot has bean well supplied every day until today, when there was comparatively little on Sale, aa usual on Saturday. The receipts have consisted very largely of oern-fed steers with only a sprinkling of other kinds of cattle. Considering the large runs the market has been In u re markably satisfactory condition. This has been due apparently to the very good buying demand, which has been sufficient to absorb tha receipts without weakening prices. In fact, the market has been either steady or stronger every day. there being an advance of 5 310c quoted on Wednesday, so that at the closa of the week it is safe to call the general market 10 916c higher than one week ago. As would naturally be expected this late In the season the quality of tha cattle com ing has averaged quite good, so that a very considerable proportion of tho receipts each day has changed hands at prloes ranging batter thn f 5.00. The high prlco of the week wae 16.60, whloh was paid on Monday. . . Cows and heifers followed along after beef steers, the market being In a very satisfactory condition each day of tho week and at the close they are also quoted 18 16o higher. The stocker and feedar trade has been Inclined to drag all the week. Farmers have been apparently too busy, to come in and the market has sagged from lack of buying support. Fortunately for the sell ing Interests the fresh roceipis of that kind of cattle have been light, but still not enough to prevent the markot from grad ually easing off. SO that it la safely 10 16c lower than a week ago. HOGS The hog market this morning was In very fair condition, both as regards supply and demand, but there was an easing off In values all along the Una. The market at this point, however, suf fered less than some others, being only tue lower. This means that the big bulk of all the hogs sold at 34.35, as against 16.37 "4 yesterday. There waa a sprinkling of sales at 36.30 and 16 40 with a lop at 36.46. The trade was active at pravalllng orices. so that everything in sight waa cleaned up In very good season la the morning. As will be noted from the table of re ceipts the arrivals this weuk foot up about the same as laat week and aa a year ago. It being just about a normal run for this point. The market for the week, as a whole, has been very satisfactory to sell ers. Ths week started out with slightly stronger prices, easing off a trifle on Tuesday and Wednesday, but made up for It on Thursday and Friday. After allowing for the slightly lower prices to day the market is 6c higher than the closs of last weak and only 16a under the high point of the year. Representative sales: No At. SB. P N At. go.
