NEW YORK STOCKS ASP BONDS Early Market Bhowa an I item Ion of th Decline, of Day Pnriona. RECOVERY IS SLOW AND IRREGULAR Ite In Par Period of Dal In ess. Which Asaonats to Almost Absolate Idleness, Develops. NEW YORK. May 18-Tha Inconstancy of the tendency of prices to stay In the dull rut of professionalism. Into which the stock msrket Is relapsing, wss again well Illustrated today. The early market showed an extension of the decline, which became pronounced late yesterday. Afterwards there s a slow and Irregulsr recovery with Increasing dullness, amounting to practically idleness late In the day. The day's movements were almost entirely ac counted for by the shifting; operations of the room traders and their Inability to move prices far In either direction. News was unimportant and without much In fluence. Pennsylvania continued to be conspicuously depressed under the Joint In fluence of the revelations before the In terstate Commerce commission and of the heavy borrowings of the company. The later Influence wss sggravated by the cir culation of reports of additional loans In Immediate prospect by the company, for which no authority was obtainable. The money and exchange markets were without notable Incident. Call money and loans on time up to six months continued easy In tone and rates were even shaded to some extent, but for periods over end of the year 6 per cent Is strong bid and the asking rate is 61 per cent. Estimates of the complexion of the coming bank state ment, based on the known movements of currency, pointed to only a small decrease In the cash Item, although the sub-treasury account shows an absorption from the banks of over 815.000.0u0. This Is due In large part to the return of the government funds placed on deposit with the banks when they were engaging gold In Europe on condition that they should be returned on recelDt of the gold. There have been very Urge receipts of Imported gold this week snd these receipts go into Dank vaults to make good the return of gov ernment deposits In the cash showing. The bank estimate shows that the movement of cash with the interior by express has been In favor of New York on balance to the extent of several million dollars. The loan Item Is subject to the usual uncertainty and the Pennsylvania loan operation will enter Into the weeks changes. Transfers or currency to Ban Francisco tnrougn tne suo-treasury were light sgaln today. The pussle of this renewed demand Is Increased to the bank ing mind by reports that Chicago banks have received large return shipments from the 1'actnc coast within tne last tew cays. Foreign exchange rates were easy again tori's v. but the decline was not sufficiently decisive to answer the question of a re sumption of gold Imports. The decline In the wheal market and re ports of better westher conditions In the wheat belt were coincident with an Im proving tone of the stock market late in the day. Professional Initiative on the re covery was languid and the trading showed an Increaalng degree of lack of leadership and a decline In the efforts to effect a movement of prices. Reading showed a firm tone at times, but Its move ment was unimportant. Reports of a dis pute among trunk lines over passenger rate differentials received some sttentlon, but were of small effect on prices. The closing tone was heavy at the recovery. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, 32.070,000. United States 4s declined H per cent on can. Quotations-on stocks and bonds were as follows: tlimi Eiprass Amslasmstsd Coppar ...... Amsrtcsa C. F Amsrlcss C. The market on fat cattle Was practically devoid of new features, it being a typical Friday's trade. While the demand, us usual toward the last of the week, wis not as urgent as It might have been and while the trade was at no time very active packers still appeared to want the cattle and kept buying them, with the result that a reasonably early clearance was effected. As to values there was no great change, such cattle as the buyers especially appeared to want bringing steady prices. On th other hand. If a man did not happen to have something which especially appealed to buyers he found it a little alow unloading and in some cases sellers reported that they had to take off a little on the price as com- tared with yesterday. The best c&ttld lere Sold up to 85.60. The trade in cows and heifers was with out any material change In any direction. Most salesmen reported It as a steady market, but there were cases where operators found it a little slow unloading and where they thought they were unable to secure quite as good prices as yester day. There were no fresh receipts of stockers and feeders of any consequence and very little doing In that kind of cattle. The few which changed hands brought about steady prices. Speculators seemed to be pretty well cleaned up and the prospect Is that the' yards will be practically bare of stockers and feeders by the close of the week. Representative sales: u&.r qi cciio. Th prices paid showed an advance of I WO o as compared with yeeterday, tbo great bulk of all the hogs selling at 84 If, tf40. It will be remembered that ye. terday nearly everything went st I4 33S; tts.46. A very choice load or neavy nogs sold tip to 8 46, which wss 6c higher than anything brougnt jesterosy. It Is hardly necessary to add that the market aa a whole wss In a very satis- factory condition, the demand belrjf good at th prevailing prices. It trTiht be added that today's advance carries ths market to the highest point touched since April 21 and leaves It only 12 Ho lowr than the extreme high point of the year. Representative galea: N.
