Ths market opened at an advance of tsjC, gradually gaining strength until It was lo higher than yester day. Th cloaa waa c higher than yester day. Rains were general In the. southwest, but rust reports from Oklahoma and Texas hy way of St. Loul were a bull help. On these reports some of yesterday's sellers turned buyers. Stocks In the, northwest hsve decreased I-0,000 bushels so far this week . Minneapolis reported the cash de. mand excellent at Increased prices. Re ceipts were even higher than hss been usual. The bears are feeling their way cautiously, the market having gone against them several times In the last ten days. Corn seems to have left the rut In which It has been running for the last few weeks. July's high point was ViC over yesterday snd the close was ic under the top. The strength was due to shorts covering on good cash demand and continued high receipts. On account or the strength Jn wheat, the advance was easy. Oat were strong, advancing t4o In sym pathy with the general strength. Primary wheat receipts were 406,000 bush els and shipments 13,000 bushels, against receipts last year of 126.OU0 bushels and shipments of 411.000 bushels. Oats were ,SHo higher. Provisions were up ilVto to 7Hc. Notwithstanding reports of additional showers throughout the winter wheat sec tlon the market opened firm on a good de mand by commission houses. The buying was due to some evteint in . h a- - of Liverpool cables, prices there falling to reflect yesterday's decline on the local board. Another reason for the Initial" firm ness was the continued Increase In stocks of wheat at Minneapolis. Trading in the corn pit was more ani mated than for sonio time past and the tone lA" ma',,t strong all day. NEW YORK. May IS Frequent fluctua tions In prices today Indicated the unsettled and heRiiatlr.g condition ot speculative sen timent. When It Is added tnat tne fluctua tions tended 10 become narrower anil tne volume of the market's activity to decrease It will be seen I tint the e xpected period 01 dullness and sluggishness 111 II. e market is developing accoiuing to precedent, after the violent decline and the sharp recovery which the market has recently passed through. Theie was a marked disposition to turn to stocks of the class known as specialities for action on the part of the professional contingent which operates from day to aay In the stock market without regal d to tne piopltlousness 01 general conditions of mar kets and Industry. Stocks which are subvect to peculiar Influences of the.lr own trades are selected at such periods. Often violent activity and wide fluctuations can be et-f-cled In such securities when the body of the market Is profoundly Inert and entirely neglected. Sugar was the old time tavorlie which was made especially prominent to day with a degree of activity which has not been seen for many months. Tho parallel movement In American beet sugar was made to give a semblance of Important developments Impending regarding trade re lations, nut no authentic information was given out on the subject. There was a similar movement In Amalgamated Copper and the copper group. This was professedly rias-a on tne annual report 01 me Atiu condn Mining company. The highly pros perous conditions In the copper trade were duly reflected In this report, which wus also elaborated with financial and operat ing dftaiis beyond precedent, something was made of this fact as a promise of a departure In policy on the part of the group or capitalists which the stock market ele ment designate as "the Standard Oil party." The money outlook was the sub ject of earnest consldft atlon in the light of the borrowing by the Pennsylvania com pany yesterday ot $d,W'0.( lor eighteen months on a basis of rather more than 6 per cent. Funds in the time loan market were reported abundant and not readily lendable at 4- per cent for periods up to six months, ror that maturity there were some loans at a per cent and for over the end of 1 lie year periods 6 per cent was re ported strongly bid, with h per cent asked. Discounts hardened In all foreign markets. Some of the exchange offering in this mar ket was said to be on account of foreign purchases of the Pennsylvania notes. Tne statement of the country's foreign trade for April and for ten months indicated a strong position In the international ex cl anuos, the merchandise balance In favor of this country for April being $37,164,871, as against i-U.tiS.OM for April ot last year, while for the ten months of Ihe fiscal year the excess value of exports over imports has risen to Slii7.512.lK4. compared with $339. 074.209 for the corresponding period of .lust year. , Attention was attracted to the dis cussion of this extraordinary trade showing In the last number of the London Econo mist at hand. This accepted authority of fers an estimate of the holdings of Ameri can finance bills now held In England and France as amounting to $400,000,000 and ex presses the opinion that the meeting of the maturities ot these bills during the coming months will operate to maintain money rates In New York In spite of the heavy volume of merchandise export. The Influence of the Anaconda annual re- fiort was supplemented to some extent by ntlmatlons of a forthcoming statement from the Standard Oil company, from which a favorable effort on speculative sen timent was augured. The transfer through the subtreasury of over $900,000 to San Fran cisco was attributed to a special transac tion and not to any resumption of the pre vious movement to that point growing out of the Are losses. The market continued to show some Irregularity throughout tho day, but last prices were about the best and the closing tone, was Arm. Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value, $2,416,000. United States bonds were unchanged on call. Quotations on slocks and bonds were as follows: Sales. High. Low. Close. 100 tS l6 J .lM.ino 11114 n' l0 . Receipt, however, were very email, a compared with a week ago, when 151 ear arrived at th yards. Birring fifteen or twenty loads of cows and heifer and a very light sprinkling ot feeder, th receipts oonslsted of corn-fed steer. Among the receipt were a number of good cattle, the average of the day's run being very fair. In spite of liberal receipts, the market this morning opened early and active snd they did not lose any lime In getting after them, so that the great big bulk of every thing In sight changed hands by 10 o'clock, or soon after. It was, In fact, the most active market experienced at this point In a long time. This would seem to verify the statement made In these column re cently to the effect that packers are hav ing no trouble In disposing of everything as fast s they can kill out the cattle. There were only fifteen to twenty car of cows and heifers In the yards this morn ing and the demand for that kind of cattle was very good, so rrluch so that everything changed hand about a fast as it could be shown. The market experienced the same advance as was the case with beef steers, prices being quoted generally loo higher than yesterday. There were no stockers or feeders of any consequence In the yard this morning and so far as oould be observed none were wanted. In other words, the country de mand for stockers and feeder I very light at the present time, and If a great number of cattle of that description were to arrive they would unquestionably meet with very slow sale.
