AMALGAMATED COPPER LEADS DECLINE This stock Has Been I sed to Sapport the Market and When It Gives Way the Entire List Follows. NEW YORK. Msy 14-Ths early stock market today gave no evidence of a change from the advancing tendency of lsst week, but before the day was over a clearly de fined reactionary tendency developed. An explanation which seemed sufficient to sat isfy the professional trading view was that the recovery from the depression follow ing the San Francisco calamity had run Its due course. Professional traders have been feeling for the top of the market for a number of days by making tentative short sales and trying to turn the market downwsrd. There wss no striking new development in the situation to warrant a renewal of positive aepresslon In the sperulstlve outlook, nut with the turn In the direction of prices 1 there was sn Invitable change In the tern- j per of the speculation and some revival of consideration was given to a number of factors which were prominent st the time 1 of the downwsrd course In prices. The news of a large temporary loan by the Pennsylvania company and the reports cur rent of a high rate of Interest to be paid on the call, called renewed attention to the heavy capital requirements yet to be met In the money market. The relaxation In the money market fol lowing the enormous sudden demand for cssh precipitated by the San Francisco losses has served to build up a sanguine feeling amongst speculators that an Indef inite period of ease In the money market is sssured. The Pennsylvania financing recalls that many Important projects have been awaiting more advantageous terms in the money market and which may be counted upon to be brought forward to take advantage of any relaxation In money rates. Western news dispatches this morn. ng gave large space to the extensions pro jected by the Great Northern railway, and mention is mane also of plana by the i nion Pacific for lines into new territory. The St. Paul extension to the Pacific coast Is known to be actively underway. An early Issue of part of the 3100.000,000 of new capital authorized by the New York Central la ex pected. There are also large holdings of railroad bonds already Issued and still in first hands, with resulting heavy loans from the banks to carry them, which are expected to come upon the market with any Improvement In the Investment de mand. Another Incident of the nsy wnicn affected speculative sentiment unpleasantly was the reduction in the dividend by the Parrot Silver and Copper company, a ml not subsldlsry compsny of the Amalga mated Copper company. This operated to Interrupt very heavy speculative buying In the copper group based on the excited advance in the price of copper metal and copper mining stocks In London. The strength In this group was being used as the mainstay of the market to hold It against the selling to take profits which was going on at other points. When the copper stocks gave way the whole market yielded. News of general conditions continued uni formly favorable today. Railroad traffic officials reported that the slight hesitation manifest amongst merchants after the San Francisco calamity had been dispelled snd with It the fears that business reaction was Impending In the country. Rates for money continued to work easier and the London market was cheerful over the prospect of declining money rstes there, the Bank of England having secured all newly arriving gold In that market. This country's April' exports of agricultural rroducts showed an Increase In value of 12,782,000 over those of the preceding April. The trade naturally opened alow on fat cattle, on account of the large number In sight, buyers being in a position where they could well afford to take their time In till ing orders. Such cattle aa happened to suit their fancy, which meana. In other worda. tha nice killers, sold In many cases at ateady prices. On the other hand cattle which for some reason or other did not especially appeal to buyers were slow to 10c lower. It was late In tha morning be fore buyers and sellers got down to busi ness and wss very late before anything like a clearance wss effected. Cows and helfera which were In only mod erate aupply and very fair demand sold at prices generally about ateady with last week. While the market was not active, the moat of the cows and helfera, at least tha desirable loads among the ofterlnas, changed hands in very fair season In tha morning. It waa noted at the close of last week that the country demand had been rather disappointing for atockera and feeders, with the result that cattle had accumulated to aome extent In the handa of speculators. This accumulation was not entirely dis posed of and speculators were forced to carry over Sunday a number of cattle. That was of Itself sufficient cause to make them very weak buyers thla morning. The fact that there was also quite a sprinkling of atockera and feedera among the fresh receipts made tha market atlll weaker so that values were generally all of Mi loo lower than last week. The lambs were mostly of ordinary quality, with only a few loads of the kind likely to attis.t buyers. In other words, there waa luinlly enough desirable stuff on .sale to really make a market. In spite of the fsct that messages from Chlcaao were posted early f living the msrket there as weak to Itic ower, buyers paid for such lambs as suited their purposes stesdv prices and In some cases, If anything, higher prices than pre vailed last week. The trade, however, was very slow and dull, ss Is usuiilly the ense when there Is so little on sale and still less of the kind thnt buyers especially want.
