The stoik m.ir- ket made a further demonstration of It recuperative vitality today In the further striking advances effected In prlcea of a large number of Important alocks. The current belief In the financial district con tinues to be that the oceratlona whl-h cauae these advances are largely In the hands of professionals or habitual specu lators formed Into market combination and made up of men of great wealth. Commission houses report that there I mall evidence of any widespread gen eral demand In the market. The accumu lation of stocks from whatever source, went on with great apparent confidence. now ever, ana prices were pusnea upward without meeting selling order sufficient In volume to overcome the upward ten- oency. Hoard room trader proressed their distrust In the movement at tlmea and tested Its force bv opposing ahort sales and by attempt lo offer price aown. me snorts to turn th market were uniformly unsuccessful and the trader were forced to shift their position anil buy back storks, thus helping on th auvance. rnetr distrust or the rise was based on the extent to which It has reached and was not occasioned by an unfavorable view of any actual occur rence bearing on values. They profeaged their scepticism also of the capacity if the market to afford profits at the higher level of price on the speculative ac- cumulatlona which have been made, owing to the light general demand for stock which has shown ltelf thu far. The action of the market, however. Indicates a digestion of profits going on from time to time In the course of the advance. Thus the stocks which are strong one day are either reactionary or held sta tionery during the next dav under the influence of the steady veiling, while ad vances at new points serve aa a sus taining Influence. This course of pro cedure ha Justified Itself up to the present time, despite the distrust pro fessed towards It br a considerable specu lative element. The broad underlying baits for th movement I the effective decline In In terest rates. Thl wa further evident today In the rates, both for call and time loans. The banka have gained apparently several million dollars on the express movement thia week with the Interior. The account of sub-treasury operation snows on its race a loss by the bank or 1409.000, but thl Includes the return by the banks of government deposit which are made contingent on arrival of gold engagement. A net gain In caah by the banka therefore of upwards of 15.00. 00 seem Indicated. Foreign exchange rates also eased off today and it waa reported that some remittances to New York were being made on account of the British fire Insurance companies. It Is assumed by the speculative party In Wall street that practically the whole volume of fire losses by the British companiea yet remain to be remitted, and It ta expected that these sum will remain on deposit irt New York for some time before being ulti mately distributed to tho San Francisco clalmanta. Attention was given to re ports of the probable fixing of an early date for the resumption of business by the San Francisco banka, aa a return flow of currency to New York la ex pected to follow promptly when thia re sumption occurs ana me aemanas on u' posits are defined. Some effect w caused by the Arrlvn at the final stages of the railroad ran legislation, aa the definite clearing up ef tht matter Is expected to relieve thj stock market of some cauae or oepreaaion. Hi.nni.li of iron damage by the cold weather were Ignored In the toek market. An advance In the prlcea of copper waa an Incident of the day and many rumor were revived of an Intended dividend In crease and projects for consolidation and enanxiai reurl lustment.
