All a Matter of Deabt.
A young man from th south, who a few
years ago was so fortunate as to be en
abled to enter the law offices of a well
known New York firm, was first Intrusted'
with a very simple case. He was asked
by the late Jamea C. Carter, then a mem
ber of the firm, to give an opinion ln writ
ing. When this was submitted It was ob
served by Mr. Carter that, with th touch
ing confidence of a neophyte, th young
southerner had begun with the expression,
"I am clearly of opinion."
When this caught his eye he smiled and
said:
"My dear yaung Irlend. never state that
you are clearly of opinion on a law point.
