market here today, final quotations on the
July delivery belli- off c. Corn was down

I'rovlslons were unchanged to 15c lower.
The wheat market today was much uti
sttld and the volume of trading was
small. At the opening prices were bear
iNhly affected by lower quotations at
Liverpool, liberal shipments from Argen
tina and the crop reports from Ohio and
Missouri. According to the Missouri re
port, the condition of fall sown wheat was
7 on May 1 compared with SB on April
I. while the Ohio report gave the condl
' tlon of wheat In that state as 103 against
101 month ago. At the end of the first
hour the market rallied what ply on cov
erlng by shorts, who were actuated by
damage reports, a number of advices from
Kansas telling of Injury to the crop there
The newa waa not all of this charac
ter, however,' and many reports told of
trie favorable condition of the new crop.
The market held firm until late In the
day, when a second reaction took place
on prorit-taklng. The close was easy.
July opened Vra to H" lower at 7H'3
1-iS.c to 7Sc, advanced to 7Mr7fl,V and
ilos'd at iSV&S'c. Clearances of wheat
and flour Were equal to 254.000 biishles. Ex
lorts for the week as shown by Uradstreet'a
were equal to S.OnO.tniO bushels. Primary
receipts were 8:.(i0 bushels against 137,000
bushels one year ago. Minneapolis, Du
Ufth and Chicago reported receipts of 133
cars against zi cars last wcea ana !!
cars one year ago.
Trading In the corn pit waa very quiet
and the tone of the market waa steady.
Large local receipta, liberal shipments
from Argentina and lower prices at Liver
pool had a depressing effect at the open

forecast of unsettled wenther In the corn

The feature of trading in oata waa the
continued liquidation of May by a promi
nent bull. Offerings were readily taken
bv commission houses, however, and, al
though the tone of the market waa some

The volume of trading waa small. July
opened a shade lower at iwV, sold be
tween XoSd.tiSc "nJ 3010 nd dosed at

Provisions were firm early In the day,
but later became quite weak because of
profit-taking. A Wloc decline In the price
of live hogs was chiefly responsible for
the weak close. The final quotations on
July pork waa $15 26. which waa l&o below

NEW YORK, May 4. The moveiio'iit of
prices of atocks turned definitely aaslnnt
the shorts today and a lively demand
developed from uncovered bears to secure
stocks. The rate of recovery wa closely
apportioned to that of the previous d
ciine, the severest sufferers In the slump
rising most buoyantly In the recovery.
The day started with a further attempt
on the part of bears to force a furthtr
decline, the attack centering on Amalga
mated Copper In continuation of Its closing-
weakness yesterday. Very light sell
ing waa forced out by this drive and the
bcRrs beaan a systematic movement to
cover shorts.
The upward movement gained force
after the appearance of the president!
special message on thj! Standard till in
quiry, and It became quickly manifest
that the effect of the document on specu
lative sentiment had been entirely mis
calculated by the professional operators.
There Was an occasional hall In the ad
vance, but notable reaction after the
feverish movement of the first hour. The
further prices advanced, without bringing
out a renewal of any considerable offer
ings, the firmer grew the conviction that
necessitous liquidation of the kind which
flooded the market In the middle of the
week waa over. The beara had to pursue
a pretty ateady advance In prlcea con
tinually to secure their needed supplies
of stocks. Trading waa another con
spicuous feature in the recovery owlPK
to the heavy bear attack upon it after
the principal liquidation of the general
market had been completed, with conse
quent scarcity of real selling to meet tho
demand ot the bears. No definite newa
was received from the miners' convention,
but the action of Reading was taken to
Indicate that the prospect of the strik
bad been over-discounted In the trading.
The preliminary estimates of the show
Ins; of tomorrows bank statement are
Involved, but the tone of the call money
was easy and the Impression was strong
that the condition of the banks waa Im
proved. There Is no question of the enormous
liquidation of the week In the stock mar
ket which must have been accompanied
by the paying off of loana, but how far
thn requirements of the new credits which
fenn the motive for calling loana may
have been an offset In the week's chango
In the loan Item Is the subject of doubt
ful conjecture. The day's net changes In
stocks show grains ranging between 2 and
10 points for all the active Issues, and
the closing- tone was buoyant, wllh the
bears in full rout and scrambling to cover
shorts, y

Foreign Financial.
LONDON. May 4,-Money was In good
demand today lor the consols settlement
and various calls. Discounts were tlrm,
owing to fears of another advance of the
Bank of England's rale of discount in the
near future and possible further gold de
mands, though it was hoped the latter
would be diverted to the continent, Trad
ing on the stock exchange gneray was
dull, operatora having no incentive to
speculate In view of the desrness of money
and the uncertainty regarding the mone
tary position In the I'nlted States. Consols
were weak on account of general selling,
as the result of the dearness of monev
and fear of a further advance of the bank
rate. Americans, after reaching parltv,
hardened fractionally. Canadian Pacific
and Cnion Pacific were In the best de
mand. Later the market sagged, but ad
vanced sharply during the afternoon on

CATTLE No one could nave been aui
puaed this morning had the cattle maraet
ueen lower as the receipts tins weeK hate
teen unusually heavy, snowing large gains
over previous weens and aim larger over
a year ago.. Moreover, the receipta this
morning were about oouole the average
tor a frlday. It is not strange that tue
reeling on tne opening evas weaa.
Vvt.iie the greater proportion of the re
ceipta conaisied of beci steers It became
apix-.rent when the trade waa once under
way that the demand waa -xceptlonaily
good for a r'rlday and in spite of larga
receipts the mar alt turned out to be Just
about steady with the previous day. The
trade was a little alow at the opening, but
there waa a fair movement wtten u was
once underway and the bulk of the cuttle
changed nanus In good season. ,
Cows and heifers seemed a little weak,
especially on the opening, aa some of the
buyera seemed to Dave it in their heads
that they had been paying most too mucn
for cow stuit this weeg. SUI1 there waa a
very fair r'rlday a demand and the market
waa just about steady on desirable atuff at
least.
There were no atockera and feedera of
any consequence and not enough of any
one kind or grade to really establish quota
tions. Aa haa been noted before in tneae
columns, stockera of good breeding have
aold very high all thia week.

HOOS Buyers have Im-cii on the bear
side all this week and have been trying
to break values. During the Hist tour
days they succeeded in foicitig valu.'S lo 14
point that whs 7'c lower than the close of
last week, which was. not very much of a
decline, considering the amount of pound
ing that the market had stood. This morn
ing when It was noted that the receipts
were unusually large for a Friday buyers
were not Slow to take advantuge of the
fact and they renewed their efforts to
force the market lower . The result was
that the trade opened very slow and dull
and it waa considerably after the middle
of the forenoon before business of any con
sequence was transacted. When buyers
and sellers finally got together It was on
the basis of a MHoo lower market. The
hogs aold pretty generally at ti.riT.224.
while it will be remembered that hogs
yesterday brought Id.an.JO with Over half
of all the sales at ti 271 Today's decline
carries the market to a point thnt Is al
most lHo lower then the close of last week
