CHICAGO, May 2. Ideal crop condition!

Bentlnient In the wheat pit was bearish
all day because of favorable weather for

traders were fairly active sellers, while
the principal buying came from shorts.
Prices were weakened also by th faot
that receipts-'In the northwest were larger
than forthe corresponding day last week

condition of the new crop were some whit
coiilllctlng, but the majority of reports

the corn -market was easy- for the greater

NEW YORK. May 2. An enormous vol
ume of liquidation was effected In the
stock msrket today. The aggregate of the
si, ares sold, while falling far below the ab
solute reoord of dealings at the New York
Htork evchange, rose well over 2.000.000
shares and made the day one of the great
onfs In New York Stock exchange his
tory. Very serious Inroads upon prices
were caused by the violence of the liqui
dation. Hut towards the end of the nay
the market showed evidence of the relief
afforded by the liquidation accomplished.
It was a fine day for the bears snd they
opersted with great boldness and on an
enormous scale all dav. Their Inclination
to take profits on the large declines of
the day was an important factor In the oc:
casional rallies.
The shrinkage In market valuations gave
rise to the Inevitable reports of money dif
ficulties and added to the uneasiness pre
vailing about the stock exchange. There
wns no confirmation of any Importance of
these reports and their failure of verifica
tion helped to th rebound. The extreme
weakness shown during the day was at
tributed to the same causes which have
been of. effect for several weeks. It was
generally accepted as a fact that very
wealthy speculative operators and power-,
ful pools, who had persisted In disregard
ing the warning of the money market and
In attempting to hold the market by main
force, were being forced from their posi
tion and obliged to sell out their huge
holdings to obtain funds In hand for the
reimbursement of hanking centers which
had advanced money for use In the abor
tive speculative campaign. The manner in
which stocks were hurled Into the market
and the slxe of the Individual blocks traded
In gave a strong Impression of the dimen
sions of the speculative Interests which
were being forced to sell and of the dis
tress which urged them to the dramatic
measures. There was not lacking the sup
position, however, that the operation might
extend not only to the selling out of hold
ings In the hands of these Interests, but
also to extensive commitments on the short
side In the effort to recoup losses on the
long side, according to the bold methods
usually pursued by the element supposed
to be most largely concerned.
The money- market Continued tight and
the rate for call money rose again to 12 per
cent. Rates for time loans for all periods
up to six month were firmly held at 8 per
cent.
Intimation of a forthcoming peclal
presidential message to accompany the re
port of the Standard OH company Inquiry
were made something of. Decreases In
March net earnings by the Southern Rail
way, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati A
8t. Louis and the Denver Rio Orando
companies made a disagreeable supplement
to yesterday's similar showings by the St.
Paul and the Loulivllle A Nashville, not
withstanding the largely Increased earn
ings reported by the Pennsylvania and the
Norfolk & Western.
The substantial recovery of the latter
part of the day Inft no adequate Indica
tion In the day'a net prices of extreme
demoralisation that ruled In the market
about midday of the season. At that time,
aside f.orn Anaconda' 20-point slump, there
were such declines as 10 for Northern
Pacific, 10 for Great Northern preferred. 7
for National Lead. 64 for Reading. 44 for
Smelting, 4 for I'nlon Pacific and Loco
motive. 6 for Cleveland, Columbus, Cin
cinnati & St. Louis and 1 to 3 oolnts quite .
gonerally throughout the list. By the close
of the day a fair sprinkling of gains was
established, which was substantial for St.
Paul. Brooklyn Transit, Canadian Pacific,
Atchison and Consolidated Gas. The clos
ing tone, however. . was unsteady, with
otr.e fresh relapses at a few points.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value.
23.5',00U. United States bonds were all un

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were quite
liberal tor a Wednesday, mere heliit a
conHiueraole gain over one week u.vro nd
a slight increase over two weehs ago. The
fact that quite a number of th-: train
were late In arriving al the .yaras nmiie
the supply on sule at Hny one time rattier
meager, betuuea delaying the trade. It la
liaruiy necessary to auu that the receipts
constated almoKt entirely ot cornlVd cleers,
as thai has been the case all th week,
the offerings 01 all other kinds of cattle
having been comparatively amull.
As is always Hie case wnen a consid
erable proportion of me Block is late in
arriving In the yards, the market opened
slow and the morning was well advanced
before very much business was transuded.
The feeling, however, was, it anytning, a
little belter unlit at the start and the
market was anywhere from lu.ly stcany
to a little higher than yesterday. Among
the receipts were quite a number of lnuua
of well mushed beeves, so that llio salua
looked very well on paper.'
Cows and heifers continue Mil' Very' light
supply, whllo the demand is as good as
usual. This combination of circumstances
always results In . a good strung market
with a reasonably active trade. The olTer
Ings of everything changed hand in good
season in the morning.
There were a few stockers on sale this
morning which brought very good prices.
The luct is, desirable kinds of stock cattle
are selling very high. There were hardly
enough feeders In sight to make much of
a test of the maiket, but the feeling waa
good and strong.

firmed un somewhat, so that the close was
very nearly steady with yesteidny. The
