to rebuild it again to its proud position as the foremost commercial city on the right hand of the continent. .
We want your help; not alone your sympathy, but your dollars. 3G0,000 people are back of these words
seeking assistance.
They do not ask for charity. They only ask for temporary aid aid to rebuild their magnificent city.
A corporation has been formed to raise $1,001,000 to house temporarily the stricken laborers and
their families, the men behind the shovels and the spades, the teams and the cars, the decks and the docks
men who are slaving with might and brain to raise this city, Phoenix like, from her ashes, to take again its
fifth place among the great cities of our nation.
The duty of this timely company is as broad as it is good. It will first give attention .to housing the
laborers in temporary canvas homes and give them employment at clearing away the vast wreckage of tho
miles and miles of ruins, a task that will call for months of laborious slaving.

CATTLE There was the usual dearth of
cattle on the market tnls morning, there
nut being enougn ot anything in sight to
make a test ot values. As will be noted
from the table of receipts at the bead ot
this column, arrivals tms week uave been
lighter than usual. The fact Is this week's
run is the smallest of any week since the
first of the year. A conquerable proportion
of the arrivals has consisted ot corn-fed
steers.
In one regard at least the market has
been Just the reverse of what It was last
week, when It will be remembered that the
market opened In good shape and steadily
declined, the loss amounting to lw02oc. The
present week opened no better, but after
Mondu values were stronger every day, so
that at the close of the week It Is safe to
rail beef steers loft loo higher than the doss
of last week. Activity has not been a
feature of the trade, buyers being a little
backward about putting on and not appear
ing to relish the Idea of higher prloes. Still
the trading has been in fair shape and a
good clearance has been maae every day.
Cows and heifers have followed along
after the steer market and have shown
about the same advance. The receipts of
cows have been light all the week, with no
treat number of really good fat stuff com
lng.
The mocker and feeder trade so far as
the better grades are concerned has beet)
in a good, healthy condition all the week,
that Is, suppiy ana demand have been about
equal. Under such conditions the trade on
mom days has been active and the cattle
emu at about steaay prices an tne ween.
At the close the yards are practically clear,
there being no surplus on hand
HOGS Liberal receipts and tha fact that
It was ths last day of the week, and other
selling points were not sending especially
encouraging news. oomDinea to make the
hog market at this point rather unsatlsfau
tory to sellers. A few loads sold early to
speculators and shippers at a Uitle stronger
firlces than yesterday, the first sales being
argely at !.&. Packers were not dtapoaed
to admit of any advance In the market and
were bears right from the start. As sellers
all felt that the market should be a Hale
stronger, ths trade was practically at a
standstill all the morning and It was late
In the forenoon before buyers and sellers
got together on a buine bat. Jt being
a Saturday, buyers had the best of It, as
no one cared to hold nogs over until Mon
day, and In the end sellers were forced to
let go at prices only a shade better than
yesterday. The big bulk of all the hogs sold
at Ji.D.H1J3i.
As receipts of hogs this week have been
the largest of any weea tms montn and de
rldedly larger than a year a-o, as will he
n.iicd by the figures at the head of this
column, the week started out with a good
stiff decline and continued Its downward
course during the first three days. On
Thursday and Friday there was a slight re
action, so that at the close of the wek tne
market Is only about K lower than one
week ago. Considering the very large re.
celpts, the market as a whole has been In
very satisfactory condition, the demand
being good every day and ths trad reason
ably active as a rule.

the total being the smallest of any
since the tirst of February. There has

the feed vards to the west or US were
pretty well depleted and that the season

Sheep have been la l.ght supply all the
week, there not being enough on sal lo
really make a test of the market, but
tbey are at least strong to loo higher
than a week ago.

NEW YORK, April 28. Heavy liquidation
continued in the stock market today with
out any new development in the situation.
The violent decline In prices of the last
two days brought additions to the flood
on the market by ths wiping out of mar
gins, uncovering of stop-loss orders,
shrinkage of oo lateral and all the other
natural consequences of a sudden contrac
tion In the market valuation of securities.
The bears were in their element, and, of
course, were not Idle.
A remarkable feature of the market mam
the calmness In the early part of the ses-'
lon, wnen seuing was comnamttvi.lv k-hi
nd supporting measures seemed to be
ftuslly effective. Such a drop in prices as
mat or yesterday usually has the result
of precipitating additional burdens on the
market immediately following, owing to
Impaired margins which have not been
made good over night and the natural un
settling effect upon sentiment of a day of
demoralisation such as yesterday. Sales of
this character seemed to be withheld from
the market when trading first began. Ths
fact that loans made on Friday at the
stock exchange carry over until Monday
may have exempted Speculative holders
from some Immediate pressure to closs.
But before the eeselon was over stocks
poured out from every direction and were
thrown over on a swiftly declining range
of prices, sales either being forced or the
sellers determined to get out. at the pre
vailing prices in tne iear mat worse was
to follow. The level touched was ma
terially lower than the low point of yes
terday. Such exceptions to th weakness
Chicago A Northwestern, Consolidated
Qa and Hocking Valley had no effect In
mitigating the gloom which prevailed In all
speculative quarters.
The bank statement made a showing wide
of all calculations and so many complexi
ties entered Into the week's money market
that no one attempted to explain th dis
crepancies. The apparent decrees in cash
reoerves of less than 21,0"0.00O contrasted
with preliminary estimates based on the
movement of currency so far as known
calculated a lops running all the way from

In the week's ftock market was an Im
pressive exhibit of the pressure for credits,
which Is forcing out securities on the mar
ket, and seemed to aggravata the pressure
to sell after th appearance of the bank

demand to cover shorts by bears many ac
tive stocks closed near the lowest, and net
losses running from 2 to T points were gen.

July stronger relatively than the May. This
was a feature throughout the session,
ohoru became anxious and bougiit July
freely, causing an advance from bottom
prices. The crowd was willing o bull the

southwestern markets had some lnlluonce.

Trade In corn was light, but there was
somewhat better feeling, owing to the be
lief that there wouid be no serious labor
troubles on the lakes. Receipts were some
what In excess of the estimate and Chicago
estimated receipts for Monday are tainy
liberal at iVB cars. The cai.h market wQ
steady, with a better demand.
Oats wer quiet, with no material ohaliM
in prices.
Primary wheat receipts were tso.000 bush
els and shipments 314,000 bushels, against
receipts last year of 273,0m) bushels and
