In Colusa county. California, this month
Miss Florence Berker ran against her
father, P. F. Berker, the Incumbent, for
the office of school trustee, and beat the
old man after a hot campaign. Sho did It

to oust a female teacher who was a friend '
of hers.
Sarah Herring Sorrin of Tucson. Arts.,
has been admitted to practice in the
supreme court of the United States. She
makes the twenty-fifth woman admitted
to practice In the court. Mrs. Belvs Lock
wood, the first so admitted, was present
when the motion was made In Washington
In Mrs. Sorrin's behalf.
Miss Lillian M. Thomas, a surgeon for
the New York Fire department, is an im
mense favorite with the firemen. When
ever a spectacular tire paints red the mid
night sky there Is a girl, clad in rubber
coat cap and boots, eating smoke with
the sturdiest firemen. She manages to
keep In the background so far as news
paper notoriety Is concerned, persistently
refusing to tnlk with reporters. Mttis '
Thomas looks like a girl of 16. Of course alio
is several years older that that, but though
the firemen are as brave as can be found
none of them has had the courage to auk
her age.
The popular fad In Berlin Is said to bs
the regular attendance at kindergarten ot
society women. The Froetjel society admits
them as pupils, teaches thesn to draw pic
tures that will amuse chlldrvn on black
boards, paper and slates; to cut out silhou
ettes and do a multltudo of other diverting
things; makes them adepts In kindergarten
songs and plays. As some of the teachers
are eminent In their profession, the grown
up pupils learn much, and it is hoped will
have no further trouble In playing with
their children nt home.
Among all the faithful and devoted servi
tors of the United States government In
the lighthouse department one of the very
oldest In duration of service until her re
cent resignation was Julia T Williams
of Santa Barbara, Cal. Her husband be
came keeper of tlas Sunla Barbara light
house In 1M6 and when he died in 1807 Mrs.
Williams took up his work and continued
It until recently, when forced to resign
her post on account or tne innrmuies or.
age. "Every nls'ht for thirty-eight years,"
so runs the official record, "Mrs. Williams
climbed to the light at midnight and
changed the lamps, and never was a hi
absent from her post except to attend
church on the Sabbath."

Though she said with a fine show of firm
ness at the outset of her married life that
she would attend to her own correspond
ence and that the employment of a social
secretary wus a piece of nonsence. Mr.
Alice Roosevelt Ixingworth has bm-n forced
lo hire a stenographer. She did not count
on the mass of letters that would co.nei
her way. They are all from lovelorn girls.

sistance so that the wedding day may
be hastened. A sample plea comes from
a young woman, the daughter of a mis
sionary, who says sho sorely needs $3.0o
so that she may get a suitable trousseau

On the Deer's Horns.
Stories of deer with rain barrels or water
pulls on their heads are common enough
among Maine and Adirondack guides, but
It Is left for Europe to come to the Xoie
with a variant Some huntsmen near Inns
bruck came upon a stag with a ladder on
Its antlers. In kplte of this handicap, it
made off at great speed on seeing the man,
leaping hedges and dashing through the
undergrowth as if quite unimiieded. Its mud
career was stopped, however, when the ends)
of the ladder caught between two trees.
Its struggles were so frantic at the ap
proach of the huntsman's dog that it broke
off part of Its anth is. ami. thus freed, made
good its escape. The ladder proved lo be
long to a f irmer, who bad left It standing
against one of hU- haystacks. While steal
ing the hay, the stag had evidently upset
the ladder, which had thus become fixed
on its horns. Which goes to prove that
honesty is the beet policy- ven for stags
