"The fact that the northwestern farmers
are seenllng; so much macaroni wheat la a
significant feature In Connection with the
price of regular snrlntr wheat that will pre
vail In the local- market next season. Should
tha regular spring wheat acreage be reduced
In or 12 per cent, as now seem likely, north
western mlllera next season would have to
buy freely, of hard winter wheat In Ne
braska and Karens, even In case the north
west should raise a normal crop. Thla
would mean that Minneapolla would ruin
higher relatively than Chicago .or the south
western markets. "

NEW YORK. April 2 The stock mar

represented the working out of the prob
lem thrown upon the flnsnclal world by
.the Pan Francisco calamity. Helling was
clearly In evidence for direct account of
aome of the Insurance companies. Stock
certificates In the names of these com
panlea were delivered at the Stock ex
change and the selling of these was on
orders from some of the principal bank
ing houses. This gave rise to natural
conjecture as . to whether the Insurance
companies were simply employing the
banking houses In a brokerage capacity
to effect the eales of securities out of
their treasury holdings or whether they
had figured as collateral for loana hy the
bankers, who liquidated the collateral
owing to the ahrinkage In values and the
wiping out of margins. rha sentimental

event and had a decidedly depressing
effect on speculative sentiment through
out the street. The ehrlnkaje In values
also brought out large salea for account
of aome of the great commission houses
and this was attributed to the letting
go of some heavy speculative accounts.
Selling of this character from western
sources waa particularly marked and had
the appearance of being presumably owing
to the wiping out of margina.
The movement of currency to Han Fran
cisco continued today on a very heavy
scale, transfers through the sub-treasury
having mounted to over $3,000,000 before
2 o clock, r.njfagement was made during
the day of $4,000,000 gold for import.
most of which waa secured in Parla. The

the London market to part with gold.

heavy resort Will be made to the bank

Influenced the Bank of England authori

discount rate.
Reports of a large loan Intended by the
Pennsylvania company, waa an adverse
factor not only on that stock hut on the
whole market. Reading ahowed some re
sistance to the day's weaknesa and con
fidence was professed by the buyers of
the stock in a settlement of the anthri-
clte labor troubles. High grade Invest
ment stocks were especially affected by
the day's selling. Bear operations were
eager sellers on the declines and their
buying to cover shorts was responsible
for occasional rallies. Little support waa
accorded the market while the liquidation
seemed to be forced, but with the lull
In the selling pressure measures were
taken to effect some restoration of the
day's losses. The demand waa languid at
the recovery, until the late announce

CATTLE Receipts of cattle wero light
this morning, only seventy-flve cars being
reported in. nut among tn numucr tn
oiilte a cood many loads of rlgnt gooa
beef steers. The market as a whole was
In very good condition, the feeling being
better And prices. Ill anyming, a nine
hlirha,
With only very moderate offerings of
beef steers and with a very satisfactory
demand the market opened earlier thnn
Is usually the caso on a good many days.
The moat of the cattle sold In good sea
son, practically everything being disposed
of by 10 o'clock or soon after. The gen
eral market waa a little stronger than
yesterday. The fact is values have been
gradually creeping upward the last few
days. Good steers are right around 10't?
15c higher than the Hrst of the week.
Among the cattle here there were several
loads good enough to bring 45.25 la 5.30,
with the top at 5.5.
Only about eleven cars- of cows and
heifers were Included In today's receipts.
The demand was fair, the market reasona
bly active, with everything selling In
very good season. The prices paid were
steady to strong as compared with yester
day. Mockers and feeders have been In rather
light receipt ' all Ibis week- and while
there lias been no very urgent demand
from the country there have been buTI
clent buyers to keep the supply well
cleaned up. With no accumulation of
that kind of cattle and with killers grad
ually strengthening It was not surpris
ing that good feeders should command
at least strong prices. Everything de
sirable sold quite readily.
