fhlnaa took a' sensational turn In the
Noonan murder case Thumday morning,
hn Judge Sutton adjourned the trial until
Monday and ordered County Attorney 81a-
beurh to fll a complaint against Al Kee-
nan. a warrant broker, charging him with
ontempt of court for alleged Interference
with a witness for th atate.
. Th witneas Keenan I accused of trying
to est out of th way la William Huglu-s,
III father-in-law, who I now near Lake-
aide. Sheridan county. Although. It I i
aertad, ha promised to be present at th
trial, ha left South Omaha ahortly before
th trial began. Tom Davis waa deputised
to go after him with a subpoena and yester-
dar Sheriff McDonald received tnia tele
gram from Da via:
Got', aerrlce. Refuses to come. Hughes
received telegram. "Do not come. Cannot
' compel you. (Signed) Al Keenan.
Th massage from Davis waa dated April
IS. at Lakeside.
Thursday morning County Attorney Sla
baugh filed an affidavit for a continuance
until Monday and. asked that a capias tssu
for th arrest and return of Hughes to this
county.
Judge Sutton granted th continuance and
bench warrant for Hughes and ordered
th arteet of Keenan on th contempt
charge on th (round he was trying to pre
vent aa important slate witneas from testi
fying.
Kmsss Denies eadlagr Meeaagr.
Keenan In a statement to reporters denied
tie had sent any such telegram.
"I do not know anything about th mea-
aga, he said. 1 "Someone must be using
my nam. Hughes Is my tather-ln-law and
Mn. Hushes Is staying at my house. I
never sign my nam Al Keenan, but always
A. M. Keenan."
Immediately after th adjournment of
court County Attorney Blabaugh began an
Investigation of the clrcumstanoes. Hughes
Is an Important witness for th state, as h
was an eye witness of the killing of Carl
son. The stat has depended upon him for
some Important testimony.
Th state has had more than usual diffi
culty In getting Its testimony In this case.
Th first witness to leave South Omaha was
Georgia Harold, who . In company with a
friend, started to beat his way to Cali
fornia, It is said. Th two wer arrested
in Fremont for pulling a gun on on of
th train crew who tried to put them off
th train. He was brought to Omaha by
Sheriff Bauroan of Dodg county and tes
tified. Just before th trial started it
was found Hughes had left th county.
He was located in Sheridan county and a
man sent after him.
Kslie Has Disappear.
Now, It la found, a knife, which played
an Important part In th evidence, has dis
appeared. It waa taken from th pocket
of Carlson after ha was taken to th
hospital. Th state contends It - was a
small bone-handled knife, not at all dan
gerous. Th defense has tried to show
Carlson bad a large knife which he used
In slaughtering hog. Th piece of evi
dence disappeared while in th custody of
th South Omaha, pellc and they contend
It was taken from th safe In th office.
MIk Bpeok, on of th witnesses for th
tat, surprised th attorneys for ' th
prosecution by testifying to soma- things
which are 'at variant with th testimony
of other witnesses. He declared Carlson
bad laraw "pig sticker" in his pocket
at th time of th raarder and that Carl
son had been drinking heavily before th
murder. Other witnesses for th state de
nied these statements. It cams out in th
evidence that Speck is a boarder at th
Noonan hoot.
It waa intimated Thursday that certain
things relating to th cas might be sub
mitted to th grand Jury.
In th meantime th jury will be Isolated
In th rooms provided for It at th Drexel
hotel.
A complaint charging an attempt to
hinder th administration of justice by
interrerjng witn in state s witness waa
filed agalnpt Keenan by County Attorney
Slabaugh at 1:80 Thursday afternoon.
There are three counts to the complaint.
The penalty for th offense charged la
a fin of $600, or from on to five years
in th penitentiary.
