CHICAGO URA1M AND PROVISIONS
Featsrr at the Trading; and Closing;
Price, ea Beard of Trade.
CHICAGO, April 24 Reports of damage
to the crop by dry weather In the soutn
west caused an advance today of over lc
per bushel. The price of wheat here at the
close of the July option was precisely lc
above yesterday's quotation. July corn and
oat were each up He Provisions were a
hade higher to 7Ho lower.
Btrengih in wheat developed toward the
middle of the eBlon. prior to that time
trading was of a dragging character and
th tone of the market was easy. The
eany weakness was due to lower cahlea
a slack demand for cash wheat and t'avnr-
auie weainer for seeding In the northwest.
one of th principal reason -for the
sharp upturn was found In reports from
th winter wheat sections, where It Is
claimed the crop ' la being damaged by
high winds and dry weather. Another
Influential factor wa the statement of the
world visible supply at breadstuff a

It .was claimed the American stocks de
creased nearly 3,5ou,000 bushels. These bull
ish advlccH started active buying by short.
The greatest demand was tor the distant
deliveries. As ottering were light prices
advanced rapidly. The market continued
active and strong, the remainder of the
oay, closing only a trifle below the highest
. point. July closed' H'ilc higher at .itH'i?

closed at a gnlu of IHc at 79'c. Clearances
of wheat and flour were equal to 109,000

Day.
NEW YORK, April 24 The stork market
enjoyed some relief from liquidation, but
not until prices had been driven to a point
lower than at sny time since the news of
the San Franrlsro disaster. This was dur
ing the first hour, in which business wa at
a high rat of activity. Transactions for
the hour ran to well over 600,000 shares.
From the low level tduched at that time
there was quick recovery to the neighbor
hood of last night' level. Advance be
yond that point were slow and on a mod
erate volume of business. The buying
decreased as prices rose above the level
offering profit to the largest part of the
speculative bull element.
There was no Important new development
In the recent tenor of the news and the
market continued tinder the dominant In
fluence of the many varying consequences
to How from the San Francisco losses.
Dicutslon continued to center on the po
sition of the Insurance companies, the ex
tent of the casualties likely to result
amongst them, the methods they might
adept to finance their losses and the ef
fect upon the general supply of credit
and upon the securities market. There was
helleved to be liquidation In progress to
day as well as yesterday for direct account
of some of the insurance companies. The
effect was particularly marked In the bond
department and in high grade investment
storks of the kind usually held in the
treasuries of corporations with large re
serve 'In Investment. Banker were of
the opinion that the Insurance companies
would have no trouble borowlng funds on
the securities of these Investment holdings
If they decide to do so. But It Is pointed
out that at current market prices the In
vestment held on securities Is below the
Interest rate (or time loans In the money
market. This might have the effect of
giving the preference to sales of securities
rather than to borrowing money to secure
funds In hand for the payment of Insurance
lorses. It was also pointed out that with
the necessary period yet to elapse before
adjustment of losses can be made and
the additional period allowed for their pay
ment, the necessity for realizing on asset
of th Insurance companies Is not Imme
diate. That considerable selling of thl
character remains to be effected, however.
Is generally believed, with natural repres
sive effect on a speculative buying of
stock.
The stream of remittance from New
York to San Francisco wa freely main
tained today. A drop to 60 cent discount
In New York exchange at Chicago drew
attention tf the fact that large shipment
are being made from there to the Pacific
coast against New York credits In order
to save time. This constituted an obliga
tion of the New York banks to Chicago
which Is to be reckoned with beyond the
actual movement of currency from New
York Itself. The intention of the secre
tary of the treasury to deposit $16,000,000
of government funds with Ban Francisco
bank will operate of course to relieve the
situation. Rrports of the light Inquiry for
Russian loan bonds In London were re
ceived with disappointment. A prominent
relaxation of foreign money markets from
requirement for the Russian loans I
dependent upon the facilities with which
holdlncs are passed from bankers' hand
Into general Investment. There la the possi
bility so that the Bank of England has
postponed action on an advance In Its dis
count rate until the needs of the Russian
loan hHs been filled. Selling of securities
In London for Paris account wa attrib
uted to the condition of unrest and fear
of disturbance Incident to a proposed gen
eral atrlke In France on May 1. The ex
pectation of large earnings for the first
quarter of the year to be reported by the
unnea mates eteei corporation helned It
stock. Not much of the day's gain were
retained after a selling movement during

CATTLE Receipt of cattle thl morning
were quite liberal, although not up to the
record of a week ago. There wa nothing,
however. In th local situation or In the re
ports from other selling points to cause sny
material Improvement In the market. The
rattle market at all polnta for several
days have been low, with a downward
tendency, owing to the poor consuming de
mand for meal product In the larg eaat
ern center.
Local packers this morning had orders
for a few loads of cattle for Immediate
slaughter and In securing thee they put a
little more life into the trade earlier than
haa been the case on a good many morn
ing of late. Bellers who had the kind of
cattle that were wanted found It easier
work selling them and to the holders of
such the market looked a little mor brisk
than yesterday; but price were no higher.
The efneral market, however, outside, of
the earlier purchases was not very active
and the most of the forenoon wa consumed
In disposing of the receipts.
Cows and heifers did not show anv ma
terial change and the market wa without
new or Interesting feature of any kind.
The trade was none too active at price
that were Just about steady with yesterday
