Kales for London ae- ount made an additional burden on me market. The combined effect of these rac tors was heavy liquidation throughout the list, which carried prices comprehensively to a lower level. 1 here was no effort to support the market except for occasional checks to pauses In the selling movement the downward course was so persistent. Securities market are not proof against the sentimental effect of great human ca lamitlea. as has been demonstrated In many places. The depressing effect of mis fortune snd suffering may be expecfod to effect unfavorable business enterprises. The market as under the Influence of this feeling to some extent. There was to be considered. In addition, the actual property losses Incident to the disaster, which were perceived to be of enormous dimensions. 'cKe 1 .bAnllnn rt thlH phase of the disaster was in the stocks of the United Railways Investment company, which reprtsent the holdings of the San Francisco street railwnv lines Offerings of small lots of these found no takers ex cept at wide declining intervals. The ex treme loss lor the common etoca at inc lowest today was 29 points and for the preferred 14 points. The net loss of the common was 1t and for the preferred 10 points. The effect on the market of thla and other factora memloned was made more acute bv the vulnerable condition or the market Itself, which the recent courses of events has demonstrating. Evi dence was pretty clear yesterday of the pressure of long stock on the market at all favorable opportunities. It was con cluded that speculative accumulations. which have been held pertinaciously through the money stringency, were com ing on the market with more favorable ondltions. caused by the relaxation in the money market. The easier conditions of money, however, failed to stimulate any large demand for stocks such as was counted upon to take over holdings by the speculative operators who accumulated stock last month. The concurrence of events this morning precipitated the llquld ntfon, which was entered upon by more gradual methods. The selling for l,ondon account was atvnnuiea to some ex tent to measure of protection against New York's heavy demand on that center for gold. Bales of foreign aecuritiea are the usual resource of that market against demands of that character upon Its gold supply. jColonial troubles In South Africa made an additional disturbing element in lAindon and the subscriptions to the Rus sian loan expanded the requirement on that monev market, covering oy snorts iu iru profits on the day's decline Induced a con siderable rally in the final hour, nut it was poorly held and the closing was irre8 unr. . .... The first mes sage from t nicago indicated a very slow market at Hint point and this was fol lowed by similar reports from the river markets, the slowness apparently being catching. There was t.o more than the usual num ber of beef steers for the middle of the week on sale but buyers apparently did not have any hurry-up orders and It was a case lo sit around and wait for something to happen. It was after ten o'clock be fore anything whatever was done. When buyers did begin to talk business their bids were Invariably lower. After the decline of yesterday salesmen were very backward about taking off anything mote and hence the trade wus a decided drag. The mar ket as a whole might be described as weak to 10c lower. What has been said regarding dullness of beef steers would apply equally well to the market on cows and heifers. No one seemed to be In uny hurry to fill or ders, and it waa late before buyers were ready to l'k at anything. Prices on really desirable kinds were about steady but others were lower. Feeders were In very moderate supply and the demand was reasonably brisk in suite of the dullness prevailing on fat cattle. 'I lie orlei ings fi r the most part changed tin nils In leasonahle season and prices were generally steady. The fact Is there has been comparatively little or no change In the feeder market this week. Some good Wyoming hay-feds sold as high as $1.70 to a feeder buyer. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS.
