CHICAGO, April 17. Firm cables and a sliurp advance in the price of cash wheat Ht Minneapolis created a strong tone today In the local wheat market, the May option cloning with a net guln of lVc. Corn and oats were practically . unchanged and pro vlslone Were unchanged to 64i7V4o lower. Wheat was strong all day. Unexpected strength shown in the Liverpool market In the face of a decline yesterday started active covering by shorts when the market opened and this buying continued unabated until the close. There was also a lively de mand by commission houses, who were re ported to be operating in the Interests of northwestern connections. There waa some signs of a congested situation in tha May delivery and that option showed greater strength, than tha more distant months. At Minneapolis No. 1 northern wheat sold to- uhv at so nigner man ins may delivery, ami this fact largely stimulated bullish "sentiment on tha local exchange. Tha mar ket closed active and strong. Ar-rll 17 The market for toks followed shout the same course to day as It did yesterdsy. The early advance sppesred to be In me nature of testing operations and the Indifference of the out side response to this proved so far rilM appolnilng to the professional element which wss responsible for the movement that they retremcd from their position and resold their takings. Foreign markets had resumed operations today after their pro longed holiday before transact ions were made In the New York market and a hope ful augury was drswn from the tranquillity with which New York's acquisitions of gold were accepted. Sterling exchange was sus- tainen above the level where gold could be shipped at a profit even with the al lowance under the I'nlted States treasury plan of deposits of government funds at the hanks against engagement of gold for Import. The London gold supply was so far relaxed that the price of bar gold was allowed to drop back Sd an ounce and the ionoon discount rate was unariecten. The softening of our own money "market was so pronounced ss to lessen the attrac tion for securing additional gold. The call loan rate rell today to below 4 per cent lefore the active lending period of the day was over and rates on the time loans re lapsed to 6V, per cent for sixty and ninety days and to 5 per cent for six and nine months. The Indifference of the stock mar ket to the easing money market Is due to the feeling that other needs remain to be supnlled before It will be wise to embark large credits In speculative commitments. fcAsler money is looked for furthering me flotation of the securities which have la-en withheld in waiting for a better market opportunity. The great expansion of credits In real estate and in other lines of new en terprise Is believed to have become clogged in something the same way. tne stringency in the money market reacting upon Itself to halt the working otit of projects upon which the moving of funds held In credits has depended. The attempt to put up prices of stocks also met with more Im mediate obstruction in the form of large offerings, the source of which left room for the suspicion that llquldstlon Of long holdings was In progress. Resdlng suffered something from the uncertainty of the an thracite labor outlook and from the re ports of riotous outbreaks In the coal re alons. Pennsylvania, on the contrary, was conspicuously strong, although this wss ac companied by a continual leening om ui the convertible bonds of the company. The Pennsylvania subsidiary stocks followed It In rotation In advances while selling was In progress at other points, The appear ance of speculative liquidation In Amalga mated Copper was of large sentimental ef fect. Tlu market as a whole was In vcrv satlsfa--tory condition, there being a good demand for cl rablc sheep pnd Ininhs of all kinds. The ottering changed hands In very good season. As to prices, good fat rheep arid lambs were Active ,nd strong iu considerably higher In spots. While 1 advance has nut been very marked 0,1 any ona day Ilia feeling Is a grest deal better and prices have been gradually crawling up ward. There was nothing good here In the way of fat sheep or ewes to make a good top on the market, but the feeling Is that everything choles would sell to very good advantage. The fat lamb market wss In about the same condition as that on fat sheep, that l, there was a very good demand and everything at all desirable sold verv readily at prices ina 15c higher than yes terday. Pretty decent kind of lambs sold up as high as $ 40 and light good ones at $.0. Ruyers looking for soniething to sheer and feed out were In evidence this morn ing and everything that the packers did not consider good enough for their pur pose sold resdily to the feeder buyers. The fact Is that feeder buyers are pav ing more In some cases tor fair to good lambs than the packers wl!l pay. The market 011 reedcrs wag fully steauy today and tho trade quite brisk.
