NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Expected Outside Demand for Share ProYoa Moderate in Volume. TRADING ACTIVE IN FIRST HOUR Market Then Becomes Maanant and In Final Drallnas early All the Earl Advance la Lost. NEW YORK. April 16 The general de mand for stocks tiKl.iy. prompted by last Week a important developments in the money market, on the whole proved mod erate. Trading whs active during the first hour of tin- session, hut a large portion of the dH.v'a total business was transacted In that time. Neither wna there any important addition to the price advances after that time and in the tlnul liour thev were gen erally lost. This waa something of a dis appointment to the snectilutlve element. which had counted upon a .e:ided levival of speculative activity with the definite bleak Ing of the stringency 111 money. The fact of the breaking of the stringency was un deniable and no further apprehension of Im mediate scarcity of money was expressed. The moderate effect on the market of this long-hoped for condition waa the cause of wloely-varieii conjecture s. The considerable advance of the latter part of last week was regarded aa having discounted the favorable change In the money situation to some degree. The fact that Ix'ndon observed the Easter Monday holiday todav left open the question aa 10 what effect would be produced, both on the stock market and on money rates in Ion don, aa the result of the forced with drawals of gold from there for New York account, t'nfavorable effect on the I Hindoo market would have a reflex effect here In spite of the direct benefit to New York of the gold supply partly secured. English newspaper comment on the situation gave evidence of some apprehension aa to the results In lndon Ijst week's engage ments of gold received additions to the amount of $3.1i).0(. Including an engage ment made on Saturday, too late to be re ported, today a statement of sub-treasury operations with the banks showed a loss In cash hy the government institution of 1I3,9I9.mi, making a total loss thus far for the iKinking week of $16.S8;.0. This Is due, of course, to the deposit of government funds with the banks against engagements of gold under the plan of the aecrctary of the treusury announced Saturday. Thete was an active discussion In bank ing circles of the new plan of the 1'nited States treasury measures to stimulate gold Imports. In stock exchange circles the fact that a new precedent had been set In the matter caused an undercurrent of apprehen sion that condltlona In the money market had been more serious than commonly sup posed to prompt such a departure from es tablished custom. The decision of the gov ernors of l he stock exchange In keeping open the exchange on Good Friday contrary to custom had something of the same ef fect on sentiment. The show of strength In today's market waa most noticeable In Industrials and spe cialties, especially in those not first grade. The fixing of Thursday for the dividend meeting on Amalgamated Copper Induced active speculation In that atock on the ex perSnii result. Forced selling on Butterlck Publishing company broke that slock 13 points, the decline being attributed to fear of losses bv the printers' strike. Foreign exchange waa atrong. but call money worked easier during the day. Prices of stocks, however, continued to recede from the early rise and closed easy and generally stenrtv at net losses. Ronds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. $2,tN0.niy). I nlted States bonds were all unchanged on call. Beef ateera constituted tha larger pro portion of the arrivals, there being otuy a sprinKiing of other kinds of cattle. At I lie same time thero were not very many good caillo in siglit. the offerings con--..istiiig largely of tair lo medium kinds. The market opened a little bit slow, buy ers order apparently not neing very urgent ao that they wie aoie lo luKe their time, ftllll me cat lie kept selling and the most of the offi ilii changed hands In tair season. I lie yards being pretty will cleared at midaay. As lo prlcea there was very litiie. chang aa compared with the ciose of last week, sellers as a rule quoting it a steady mar ket. Cows and heifers were In light receipt, only about ten or a dozen cars being on sale In addition to odds ana ends. The market on cow stuff was more active than waa the case with ateera, and 11 did not take buyers very long to clean up every thing in eight at pricea thai were fully steady. In ome cases salesmen who hap pened to have just what a buyer wanted figured that he was able to secure strong prices aa compared with the close of last week. Stockers and feeders were also In light supply and as speculators were pretty well cleaned out at the close of last ween there waa a good demand. Everything desirable ciiutig.-d hunda In fair season at fully steady prices. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. Ho. A. All toid. aeventy-nine crs were reported In, but out of that number twenty-four cais were only halted here Sunday for feed nnd lest, belni shipped out lor eastern feed lots, of those In tne barn this morning there waa an additional fifteen cara, also on tne any to eastern feed lots to be shorn and made reudy for tho later market. It will be seen from this that the actual offeringa on the market were nuite moderate for the first day of the week. Desirable fat sheep and lambs were not very plentiful among tne d.y' receipts, there being comparatively fea loads that could be called really good. The demand on the part of the local packers atenied to be quite brisk and the market on any thing thai they could use was fairly active and fully atendy. The offerings for the most piirt changed handa In good season In tha forenoon. Feeders constituted a very considerable proportion of the recelpta this morning, rsneclallv feeder lambs. Fortunately there i waa a good demand on the part of buyers who were looking for sometnmg tnat tney could sheer and feed out. In consequence, the market was quite active and fully ateady. In fact, aome eellera thought they secured atrong prices aa rompired wilh last week. The feeder buyers paid as high as $6.40 for lambs, but It must be under stood that those bringing the latter price were good heavy atuff, already fat enough for the killers. From the above It will be understood that the market on both sheep and lambs at this point was In a K"d healthy condition today and entirely satisfactory to tha sell ing Interests.
