NEW YORK, April 11 Today- money
market did not fulull the promise held out
by the violent relapse In rate caused by
the news of the heavy engagement of gold
for import. With call loans opening at
lo rer cent and large amount loaning near
that rate, vesteruav'a view of the extent
of the relief afforded by the gold engage
ments was modified, although the money
rate ran off later. A considerable relief
from the degree of stringency before exist
ing waa obilou and there waa no algn of
pressure of lhiuiilatli n In the stock mnrl.et.
There was an equal lark of any aggreive
Initatlve toward speculative accumulation
of stocks or attempts to advance prices.
Notable atrength whs limited tn a few Indi
vidual stock nnd the movement was halt
ing and Irregular. The imrresion wa
given that relief from the stringency
the money market secured from the en
gagement of gold In the Ixmdon market
was designed for other purposes thno to
foster a renewal of speculative activity on
the atock market. It is understood that the
New York Citv government, which bor
rowed $5.(io,0iio last week for a period of a
week rather than rrarket bond on the
high Interest basis necessary at that time,
has placed its bunds for half the amount
on satisfactory term, but ha borrowed
the other half again for a enort term. Bor
rowing of this character will be sup
planted when they fall due by more perma
nent obligations, which will then make their
demand upon the resources of the money
market. Another $1.0iio.0oo In gold was se
cured In London today and It became known
that one of the Canadian bank had secured
an amount said to be $3,000,000 In London
for Import Into Canada, but with the pur
pose of using the proceeds for loaning pur
pose In thi city. The response of the
foreign money markets and of our own ex
change market did not offer proml for a
large extension of the gold movement. The
rebound In sterling exchange was parox
ysmal. Compared with the low rate of
vrsterday for demand bills, which was at
one time 4 290, the rate waa rushed up
today 175 points to 4.8465. The suddenness
and violence of this movement Is probably
without precedent in the New York market.
The weeklv statement of the Bank of
England showed the strain upon It re
sources Involved by the gold wlthdrawala.
Its holdings of bullion having fallen during
the week to $10,8J0.770. The decline In the
loan account was not sufficient to prevent
a considerable decrease In percentage of
reserve to liabilities. The Bank of France
in the same period has Increased Its gold
holding $ti.75O,000. with a large contraction
both in loan and the outstanding note
Issues. The Increase In the pension pay
ments ha reduced the sub-treasury's ab
sorption from the banks for the week to a
nominal figure. The announced policy of
the secretary of the treasury to deposit,
the current excess of government receipt
over the expenditures with national banks
at various points relieve the New Y'or't
hank from Rome portion of the demand
upon them from the Interior. But the
heavy custom collections still renter at
this point.
Readings strength was connected Willi
hopes of a labor settlement and the ad
journment of the coal conference whs fol
lowed by a reaction In that stock. Thl
was the mainstay of the whole market and
prices declined In sympathy to a fraction
oelow last night and closed easy.
Bonds were steady. Total sales, par value,
$2,455,000. fnited State new 4 registered
udvanced Vi per cent on call.

CATTLE There were n.. many cattle In
tho yards, only 123 fresh csrs being re.
ported, which was considerably amaller
man uaual on a Thursday. There was,
however, a great plenty as compared with
the demand.
The market on beef steers opened ex
tremely slow and dull. In fact, the market
was a dead on at the beginning and It did
not develop any great amount of life dur
ing the day. Packera' representative were
very slow to take hold, apparently having
about as many cattle on hand aa they
needed. Hence they were in no greut hurry
to add to their holdings. The result waa
that the cattle sold at prices that were
anywhere from weak to l'c lower than
yesterday.
Cow and heifer did not escape the
weakness which overtook the teer market,
in fact, they were if anything, weaker
than ateers. Most buyer seemed to have
come to the conclusion that they had been
paying higher prlcea here than were war
ranted by. the condition of other markets
and they announced right from the atart
that they would have to buy even the good
cows and heifers lower or leave them alone.
With buyer taking this position, there
could he only one reault a slow and lower
market, prices In most cases being all of
lOo lower.
As usual on a Thursday the demand for
feeders was not as brlF-k a earlier In the
week, speculators being Inclined to act eon
aervatlvely for fear of having cattle to he
carried over Into next week. A few cattle
which were In early and which Just hap
pened, to fill ome place old at steudy
prices. Later trains brought In more feeder
cattle than usual for a Thursday and the
break on fat cattle acted a a atlll further
bear Influence. The result was feeders
closed off slow and easier.

to aell at $6.30 today, showing that the
