CHICAOO. April 10. A sharp advance In
wheat hre followed the publication of the
government crop report, which showed a
loss of five point In- the condition of rail
sown whest. The market closed strong
with the May delivery o higher. Corn
and oats were changed very Slightly and
provision were 6o7liC higher.
Prior to the issuance of the crop report
trading In' the wheat pit waa quiet, and
because of a general belief that it would
declare winter wheat to be in excellent
condition the taste 4 the market was' eagy,
Whun "the figures declaring th condition
of the crop to be 89.1 were posted
there was a sudden reversal' of . sen
timent. The market held strung for the
remainder of the day on active general
demand. The close was strong with price
almost at the highest point of the day.
May opened Voc lower at 7T?178c, sold
off to 77VUo and then rallied to iKVtf
7c.- The close was at 787,c. July sold be
tween 77HH7Sc and closed with a gain
of S ialic at Va?nic. Clearance of wheat

world's visible supply as shown by Iirad

bushels for the corresponding day one year
ago. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago re
ported receipts of 234 cars against 361 cars
last week and 167 cars a year ugo.
The upturn in wheat had a strengthening
effect on the corn market, prices showing
moderate firmness during the last half of
the session. Trading, however, was not
In large volume. During the early part
of the day sentiment was Inclined to favor
lower prices because of lower cables and
Improved weather conditions throughout
the corn belt. A feature of early trading
was heavy sales of July by a leading ele
vator concern. The principal buying wa
by commission houses. The market cloed
steady and elose to the highest price of
the day. May opened a shade to "c lower
at 46'g4:i1o to 4c, sold up to 4fiV4C and
closed at 464c. Jxcal receipts were 26i
cars with 12 cars of contract grade.
Oats were steudy sll day. The clear
weather weakened prices somewhat at the
opening, but this was later offset by the
strength of wheat. May opened a shade

NEW YORK, April 10,-Stock became de
cldedly weak today under what appeared
to be a raid by an organised bear party
In the speculation. The continued strin
gency of money has been viewed with
considerable equanimity by speculative
holders of stocks so long a prices held
pretty steady or showed occasions! signs
of advance, keeping up speculative oop
lldence that there would be an ultimate
rise ofTording a profit on holding sufficient
to cover Interest chHrge even at the high
prevailing rates. But with price starting
decisively downward sentiment underwent
a marked alteration. It wa evident that
the fear of such a movement hsd prompted
the placing of large stop loss order be
low tho market. Once the raiding tactics
of the bear party had succeeded In forcing
prices down to the figures at which these
stop loss orders came Into effect there wa
quite 'ndlscrlmin.tte selling snd throwing
over of large holdings for what they would
bring.
The market showed more acute weak
ness than at any time for several weeks.
The firm resistance hitherto shown by
stocks to the stringency In the money mar
ket has caused 'belief that extensive specu
lative commitments In stocks must be play
ing very little part In the expansion of
credits which has run up the rate for
mony. This ha been used as an argu
ment to show the strong technical position
of the stock market In spite of the fact
that the severest stringency In money had
leen confined almost wholly to the wall
of the Stock exchange Itself.
A decided effect seemed to be produced
duced on sentiment also by the government
estimates of the condition on April 1 of
the winter wheat crop. The condition wa
poorer than had been honed for and the
decided strength resulting In the wheat
market dashed the sanguine confidence that
has been felt In the promising outlook for
th crop and the assurance of that potent
factor in keeping of the high tide of pros
perity. There wa little change In the
money situation, the renewal rate being
generally held at 20 per cent. While the
late yielded early to below that figure. It
recovered later to above It and touched
25 per cent again. While sterling exchange
continued to decline o to widen the
margin of profit on engagement of gold
for Import, the difficulty of securing a
supply of the precious metal seemed to
grow owing to the scarcity of new ar
rivals In Imdon and the keen competition
of Paris for the available supply. An
other day's loss of nearjy fl ,000.000 to the
subtreasury brought the Hbsorptlon for the
banking week up to $2,158,000, compared
with $1,804,000 the corresponding period of
last week.
At one time during the morning the stock
market wa quite generally strong. Read
ing wa advanced on talk of a compromise
of the coal mining dispute. Amalgamated
Copper responded to gossilp of a prospective
dividend Increase. But these stock after
wards were amongst the weakest of the
list with corresponding effect on the re
versal of sentiment. The professional char
acter of a part of the selling was Indicated
by the demand to cover shorts, which
caused mime recovery, so that last price
were not at the lowest of the day, al
though the closing tone was unsettled and
Irregular again.

Catti.E ReceiDt of cattle this morning
were very liberal for a Tuesday, being tne
largest for that day since the third week
In March. The offerings consisted largely
Of cornfed steers, and while there was not
much In the way of choice atufff, there were
a good many right good load of fat steers.
'1 he market as a whole was rather sloa
and It was late beiore anything Ilk a
Clearance was effected.
Buyeis and sellers seemed to be conld
erably apart In their views regarding the
beef steer market. Owing to tne large re
ceipts, buyers started out bidding prices
that were generally lower than yesteruay.
On the other hand, salesmen, owing to the
good quiillty of tne offerings, seemed 10
fed that prlct should be fully steady and
were pricing their holdings In many case
stronger. Owing to this difference In opin
ion the trade was very slow at the start.
When the cattle did sell they went on the
basis of weak to Hie lower prices that la,
some of the cattle which buyers especially
wanted sold almost as well a yesterday,
while other kinds sold at fully lou lower.
Cows and heifers weie In fair demand
and the desli it b;e loads among the offer
ings changed hands In veryfalr season,
but the general murket wu slow lo 19u
lower.
Blocker and feeder, at least everything
at all desirable, met with quite ready sale
at fully steady prices; In fact, the feeder
market was 111 a gnoa, neamiy cuhuiiumi
and entirely satisfactory to the selling In
terests. Representative sales:

SHEEP Late trains snd poor quality
combined to make a slow dull sheep mar
ket. The receipts, as was the case yester
day, were large on paper, but a considera
ble proportion of the arrivals was con
signed through to eastern points and not
ottered for Sale. Of those actually on sale
there were a good many cars of little
lambs that were neither good killers nor
good feeders and which were in conse
quence very hard to dispose of.
Buyer seemed to want a few good killers
snd as a rule anything coming under that
head changed hands quite readily at fully
steady prices. This wss especially tne case
wltn heavy sheep and ewes, one choice
bunch of ewes weighing over 117 pounds
selling as high as So.fi6. After buyers had
picked out tne desirable loads from the
offerings the trade became extremely dull
and slow. No one seemed to want the
common and medium kinds and holders uf
such found it hard work unloading. The
market might be summed up aa reasonably
active on good to choice fat stuff, and
steady, but very slow and weak oa the
common to medium kinds.
