TOPICS FOR A DAY OF REST.
A new method, of raising funds for the
erection of a church la furnished by a
native Chinese In Chefoo, a Taolst monk
or' priest, who came down from Chlnlnfu
to collect money. The Incident Is related
by the Rev. W. O. Elterlch. a Presbyter
tan missionary In China, who says that the
monk made a vow not to eat, drink, speak
or sleep until he had secured enough money
to erect a temple to his gods. He lived
tn a cage, or little wooden box, which was
stationed outside of the poorhouse In the
native city. ,
The cg resembles a pigeon cote with
an opening of a few square Inches to ad
mit sufficient air to keep the fellow from
suffocating. Through all the four walla
of his house Iron nails about ten Inches
long had been driven at an elevation even
with the man's eyes. The long sharp
prongs surrounded his head like a halo, the
points of the nails being only an Inch or
so from his skull. They would certainly
remind the fanatio should he become
drowsy.
So far as could be seen there was but
one door Id the cagi and that had been
nailed up when the "saint" entered. Be
sides this the lock was sealed with paper
covered with Chinese characters. When
lit. Elterlch told of the matter the man
bad passed seven nights and days In the
caa without touching food and without
sleep. He looked sickly and much worn
out and the spectators were Inclined to
believe that It he continued his task he
would not have much chance of surviving
to see his temple erected. In front of the
cage was a basket In which offerings were
deposited, as well as a book In which
donors might Inscribe their names.

selves as elders. H. A. Hobbs, E. W.
Lamoreaux and Edward McEachron were
elected to the board of trustees. The pas
tor. Rev. M. V. Hlgbee. came here from
Coming, la., about ten months ago. There
have been fifty accessions to the member
ship of the church during these months.
The congregation voted an Increase in the
pastor's salary.

army association at Dalny, Manchuria. On
some days from 10,900 to 1&.CKK) men, wait
ing for their steamer, were entertained

diers In Manchuria are being met by the
associations at Dalny and Uuchutung, the

Tokio, Japan, will give his lecture on "The
New Japan. Dr. Takasugl is a gTaduaie
of re Paw university and a postgraduate
of Boston university, and is now pro
fessor In the Imperial college, Sapporo,
Japan. As a student of conditions in his
own country, he was Induced by one of
the lyceum bureaus to make a short lec
ture tour of the United States. A son of
Marshal Oyama was especially. Intrusted
to his tutelage. Thirty of the army offi
cers who won renown at' the front dur
ing the late war sat under his Instruction.
As a 'member of the Samurai and son of
a noble family, he has the entree into

Chlnda, vice minister of foreign affairs,
was a college male and Is a most lntlma'e
friend. These facts prove that Dr.
Takasugl knows his native land, and It
Is expected that his lecture next Sunday
