MANY NEW BUILDINGS COMMENCED Labor Coatroverstes Are the Oaly tloeds mm Bmslaess Horlsoa Lew Per Ceat of "'I Fall area. NEW.TORK. April 6.-R. G. Dunn A To.'s weekly review of trade will eay to siorrow: Opening of spring trade la not perceptibly retarded by the partial Interruption to tpal mining, except in the Immediate vicin ity of anthracite mines. High tempera tures , not only broadens the demand for seasonable merchandise, but stimulates igrlcultural operations, reopens navigation and starts many contemplated building speratlons. Were It not for a few labor tontroversles the commercial horizon sould be cloudless. But some manufac turing plants will be compelled to suspend If the fuel supply is cut off and structural work is Interrupted by demands for higher S'ages In certain localities. That the year started out to eclipse all records is tvldeuced by bank exchanges 18 per cent rger than In the first quarters of the previous year, while liabilities of- com sierclal failures averaged only 81 cents on fach $1,000 of solvent payments through ihe clearinghouses, which Is the lowest tommerclal death rate for the first three months of any year. The average, if dis tributed through all the firms In business, ass only 2166 to each concern, not a serious burden to be borne by the mer cantile world. Railway earnings In March were .9 per cent larger than last year and foreign commerce at this port for last week showed gains of $1.13,:i9 In Imports and $X37,859 In exports as compared with the corresponding week In 1905. Progress in the Iron and steel lndustrv has not suffered as yet from the partial suspension of coal mining and new busi ness comes forward each week in great volume. I text developments are most R renounced In the structural steel division, ext in volume of new business Is the tonnage of steel rails that Is rapidly clos ing order books up to the end of the year. Further strength appeared In the hide market. Failures this week numbered 191 as against 233 last year and 18 in Canada as against 28 last year. In fact, almost Ideal winter wheat situation, a little more ani mation In the Iron market, continued ac tivity In all lines, heavy railroad earnings, Increased bank clearings and the surpris ingly little adverse effect of the coal miners' partial shutdown are the significant fea tures presenting themselves this week. The rush of spring jobbing Is now about over, but Improved retail demand has already In volved some reorder business. All kinds of light summer wear goods are active and strong In price. Dry goods. millinery, shoes, clothing and farm Implements are marked features at retail, while in whole sale lines the demand for lumber, hard ware, paints, glass and other materials bear witness to the present record rate of building. Comlskey's White Sox will be in Omaha for two games, one Saturday and the other Sunday, at Vinton Street park, with Pa's Celts. The White Sox team is divided in two parts, but the Omaha fans will have the pleasure of seeing such stars as Ishell, Pennell. Dundon, Green, Dougherty and Patterson. Both games will be called at 8:80 and if the weather man keeps his promise the stands will be packed to see the aspirants for pennant honors of the American and Western leagues. But the present-day luminaries of the diamond will not furnish the only feature of Comlskey's coming to Omaha. In the middle of the diamond will be a star of the long ago, of the good old days when the great Comlskey himself waa In his prime. There In the middle of the field, tolling for his daily breail. will stand the once king of pitchers, Bobby Caruthers, the man who sold for $14,600 from the old St. Louis Browns to Brooklyn, more money than any other ball player ever brought. And there, perhaps, in the grand stand, or may be with his team on the bench, will sit Charley Comlskey, who as first baseman and captain of Chris Von Der Ahe's "Four Time Winners" broke Caru thers in for fast company. Bobby was a mere stripling of 18 when Comiskey got hold of him and about 22 when he parted with the Old Koman to go to Brooklyn. While Caruthers' days as a ball player are over, he still remains in close touch with the game and Is as good an umpire as most circuits ever saw, ao good that the unanimous feeling In the Western league Is one of keen regret that he could not have been retained as a regular um pire. The very reason, though, which en dears him to the fans is the one for which he Is not kept in the league. He dared suppress a hoodlum manager and paid the penalty.
