While In a nt of jealousy Charles Harris,
colored, of 1307 Cass street. Inflicted twenty
on superficial stab wounds on tha bodr
of hla wife, at Eighteenth and Leavenworth
streets, Thursday morning; then went to
Sixteenth and Chicago atreeta. drank a
bottle of atrychnlne and died half an hour
later to ( tha surgeon's room at the city
Jail. Tha stabbing and suicide were tha re
sult of unhappy domestic relations between
Han-la and his wife. Coroner Bralley took
Harris' body to the morgue, where an In
quest was held yesterday afternoon. The
coroner's Jury returned a verdict that
Hani came to his death from strychnine,
eefl-admluistered.
Harris is the man who tried to hang
himself in cell at the city Jail two months
ago. He. was arrested at that time on
complaint of his wife, who reported the
man threatened her life.
The stabbing affray occurred at 8:16 a. m..
In front of Kelly's laundry, 1760 Leaven
worth street. Mrs. Harris was employed
as a domestic with Mrs. Mollle Harding.
J7MV, Leavenworth .streot, since ahe left
her' husband, a week ago. Shortly before
the stabbing she was returning to the
Harding place with a down of eggs, when
Harris accosted her and accused her of
having been out with other men the night
before.. He grabbed the eggs, threw them
to the street and took out a knife. The
woman then consented to go back with him
and asked Harris to go up the stairs with
her for some articles. Mrs. Harris led
the man up the stairway, east of the Hard
ing place, confided to a woman her auspi
cious and asked that the police be notified.
Mrs. Harris then ran down the stairway
with the man after her. At the street,
Harris threw the woman down and began
slashing her light and left. The woman
struggled, and Harris succeeded In getting
away.
Maw Harrendera to Police.
The police patrol with Detectives Mitchell,
Davis, Maloney, Dfmohoe and Officer Wool
dridgo made a hurry call to the scene.
Tha search for Harris was Immediately
taken up. Detective Mitchell, With assist
ance of Wooldrldge, went to Harris' room
and learned the man had gone to Six
teenth and Chicago streets. When the de
tective reached Fourteenth and Chicago
streets he met j Harris, who recognised the
officer and gave himself up.
"I . have' taken poison. I want to tell
you the truth. ' Here is a picture of my
mother. Write to her for me. I won't
live long," said Harris, who was then
taken violently 111. A passing express
wagqn was pressed Into service and the
'man hurried to the police station, where
he died within fifteen minutes.
Harris told the police he drank the
strychnine In front of a drug store at' Six
teenth and Chicago street a few minutes
before he was arrested.
Harris was 31 years of age and worked
a a driver. He and his wife were married
three years ago. A year ago the wife
Jumped from a second-story window at
Des Moines while trying to escape the
wrath of her husband. She said Thursday
morning Harris had threatened her on nu
merous occasions. ' The woman la 21' years
of age. Police Surgcoa Wills and Drs.
Arnold and Ford, who attended the woman,
said they expected no serious results. The
wounds were distributed over both arms,
breast, back and neck. '
Large Pocket Half Wrtpoi,
. The stabbing was done with a large
pocket knife. When searched Harris had
tho largest -razor ever seen at the city
Jail. Harris died In the' surgeon's room
at the city Jail and In the preaence of
his wife, who was being attended on the
; operating tabic. The woman seemed to
be In no way affected when the word was
passed around that the man had died.
, Detective Mitchell, who led the chase
for Harris, has a record of never having
lost a colored fugitive. He has made a
study of the ways of colored men after
committing a crime and invariably Is de
lulled on. such cases.
.V humorous Incident occurred while
Harris was dying. A man breathing heav
lly and talking In a Jerky manner called
up the police station by telephone, asked
whether Charles Harris had been arrested
and said Harris owned him money which
lie desired to collect.- The creditor asked
the police to hold Harris until he go( to
the station and hung up hla reeclver be
fore he could hear the Information that
liui i in hnd died. A few minutes later
man rushed into the station and asked
for Harris,. But Harris was dead.
Mrs. Harris was removed to Clarkson
Uoepltal. Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Made Bymona Thursday afternoon
Wed an anawer and cross petition to the
petition for divorce filed several days ago
by ber husband. John P. Bymons. The
doeunjpnt contains thirteen typewritten
pages and constitutes a denial of all of the
Charges made In hla request for a divorce.
She denies having ever abandoned htm
and says she never sfmck or bit him, as he
, charges, or circulated, false stories about
him and has at present no desire to in
- Jure him In any way.
The cross petition takes up most of the
document. She says ahe worked to help
support hlra while he was studying music
and . they got along well together until
they went to Oreenvllle, Pa., where he se
cured a position aa music teacher In Thlel
college.. Bhe says he began the Inordinate
una of tobacco and also drank somo wine
at student meetings, remaining put some,
times until t o'clock In the morning.
During this time she says he associated
with tome young women at Greenville and
she admits she did become jealous, aa
chargd. He wtqt back to England In 1H01
to be confirmed Into the Episcopal church
and study music and she followed him. He
. returnsd to America and, somo time later
she returned, but ahe found a letter await
ing her which said he would rather die than
live with her again. Then she began a
s-arch which ended In her locating him In
Omahu.

Judge Troup Thursday afternoon ren
dered an opinion In the mandamus suit of
The Evening Bee against The South Omaha
Fire and Police Ooard, upholding the con
tention of The Bee that the board must
recognise applications for saloon licenses,
notice of which has been published In the
newspaper having the largest circulation
In tho county.
The suit was the result of action taken
by the board, in which It decided to fol
low a provision of the South Omaha char
tor that notices of application should be
published In a paper published In the city
and having at least 300 subscribers. The
contention of The Bee was based on the
fact the Slocumb law provides the notices
must be published in tho paper having the
largest circulation In ife county.
Judge Troup decided the provision of the
charter waa Invalid, aa It attempts to
amend the Blocumb law without setting
forth the section It amends.

In announcing In advance It would follow
the charter provision was Improper, though
it may have been inude In good faith. Tho
only. question, he said, was whether or
not the board had gone far enough so its
action could he considered a refusal (

such a position they would be unable to
