CHICAGO. April 4. Higher prices for wheat In foreign markets was largely re sponsible for a sharp advance here todav. At the close wheat for May delivery was up c. Corn and oata were each up He. Provisions were a shade to 12Hc lower. The wheat market was strong all day despite favorable weather In the United States. - An advance of fic in the price at Liverpool, together with higher prices In nearly all other Kuropean exchanges. Induced active buying by shorts, which continued all day. There was also a good demand from commission houses. Ad vices from Winnipeg, claiming that wheat was being shipped from there for export further encouraged tbe bulla Another fac tor! which strengthened the market was that Bradstreet's reported a decrease In the world's visible supply for the week of t.744.000 bushels against a decrease of 1 Kfiaono bushels for the corresponding time one year ajro. The market closed firm with nrloea sllahtly below the highest point The May option opened 4$3o to to 4(6Hc higher at 77'!t'S78c, advanced to 7S"io and closed at 784ki?i'78tc. July ranged between T7fcir78o and closed with a net gain of 10 at TiSill'iBC. viearanoes ui worm mm flour were eaual to 438,000 bushels. Primary recelpta were 749.000 bushels against 828.000 bushels one year ago. minnrniwiu!, lu luth and Chicago reported receipts of 277 cars against 362 cars last week and 168 cars a year ago. There was an active general demand for corn, but the ofterlnra were light all day. The market manifested considerable . strength, chiefly because of the scarcity of nrlerlna-s. Ixcal receipts were small. cables were firm, cash corn was higher and the weather for the movement of the crop was unfavorable. All these things tended to higher prices. The market closed strong at about the highest point. May nnoned Ufl Vio higher at 44Afi44c. ad vanned to 45ii4&iC and closed at 45c. Local receipts were 323 cars with 8 care of con tract grade. Oats were strengthened somewhat by the firmness of other grain and also by wet weather, which It Is thought will hinder seeding operations. At the close prices were at the top notch. May opened c hlaher at 310. sold off to JO' 'a 31c and ad vanccd to SUV-, where it closed. Local recelnts were 203 cars. Provisions were weak early In the day becauxe of the selling of pork and ribs by a local packer. The selling was Induced bv a decline of 64710c In the price of II hogs. NEW YORKSTOCKS AND BONDS Attempt of Professional Party to Advance Price Apparently Subsides. SHARP BREAKS IN SPECIAL ISSUES t all Honey BUea to Maeteea Per teat .Darin Flarry l-nte the "es- slon Market Cleaea F.asy. NEW YORK. April 4 The shrinkage In the activity of the trading today Indicated xihaMenr of the attempts to advance prices on the part of the professional party In the speculation, which haa been promi nent in the dealings lor me iaii iw A number of factora In the Immediate situ, atlon proved diacouraglng to the campaign for the advance and the disposition was shown to adopt a waiting attitude. There was a considerable selling movement early In the dav In the course of profit-taking by speculatora In a doubtful state of mind. The movement was not very extensive, however, and did not Involve any great damage to prlcea. Sharp breaks in special storks were a large factor In the general weakness at that time. The Chicago Vnlon Traotlon stocks, which were rushed up in the closing deal ings, fell back sharply this morning on, the mixed results in yesterday's municipal election In Chicago. Consolidated Gas also, after a rise at the opening, threatened to renew Its Weak decline. The wide losses In these stocks were pretty well recovered In the course of the first hour. After that the market was extremely dull nil day and moved within narrow limits. Reading made most headway against the depression, although that stock also was forced be low lnt night In the course of the early trading. , The condition of the money market was a discouragement to any extension of the speculation, the stringency of call loana appearing rather to Increase than to relax. The rate had run up to 10 per cent soon after noon. The early rate of 7 per cent also was hle-her than hitherto during the week and 19 per cent was touched In the late flnrrv. Yesterday's transfers through the subtrcasury to the interior points lifted the loss bv the banks to that Insti tution since Friday, as shown by today's statement, to 33.644.ono. This compared with a loss of less than 32.000.000 In the cor responding period of last week. It was aa serted also that shipments were being made to various Interior points by ex press. The foreign exchange market was little affected In snlte of the high call loan rate. The discount rate was easier, both In Ixndon and Berlin, and authorised Inti mations were given that an additional gold engagement, for Import this week was a possibility. The discount rate at' Paris, however, hardened and there was a sharp drop In sterling exchange at that point. The declaration of only the regular divi dend on Atchison seemed to cause dlsap- r oir.tment to some holders. The advance n Rending had little effect on the general list and the market yielded again with the late flurry In call money and closed easy. Bonds were Irresrular. Total sales, par value. 32.470.nno. Thu receipts, however, were smaller than usual on a Wednesday, 233 cars having been received one week ago. The market as a whole did not show any very marked changes. Receipts consisted very largely of beef steers, there being among the offerings a large number of good fat cattle. A num ber of the trains were very late In arriv ing at the yards so that the market opened slow and dull, buyers being disposed to tske their time and await the later arrivals. This gave the market a rather weak ap pearance. Still right good steers sold at steadv prices. Common to medium kinds did not move off any too rapidly and In spots were a little hit lower. In fact, any change that may have taken place was unquestionably on the side ot easier prices. Cows and heifers were in light supply, only ten or a doxen loads being In sight when the market opened. While some of the buyers seemed to be holding off and did not take very many rattle of that kind, there were plenty of buyers for the few loads on sale. As a result the market was fairly active at steady to strong prices. Blockers and feeders did not present any new features, the market being fairly active at prices fully steady. Good csttle of this kind have sold well all the week and the market has been without note worthy feature. Representative sales: BEEF STEERS. 32.. The early sales were largely on the bitsis of $6X14, as agnlnst $.:'7i4, which was a very popular price yesterday. After some of the more urgent orders were filled and buyers dropped out the bears were ahle to curry out their plan of pounding prices, so tliiil the close was B'u'Hc lower than vesterndy. The bulk of the hogs sold St $;.JiVii.224. as against $6.2C''a.30 yesterday. While the trade opened slow a clearance was made in reasonable season. Buyers after learning how the stuff sold at other market points seemed to fe,.-l that they had boosted the market at this point, mnMt too foal inH w,r, I . 1 1 . ...t , a little more cautiously this morning. At ' tne same time the quality of the receipts was not so good as yesterday, that Is there were not so many good or choice loads on sale. Still another reason to he found In the fact that a large proportion of the recelpta came In wet from last night's rain. As a result the market on both sheep and lambs was rather slow todnv, but still about steady. Iambs that brought $t.60 yesterday, sold at the same point today, showing that there waa no chunge, at least on them, and other Bales, so far as could bo Judged, also looked steady. It will be noted that some clipped sheep and lambs are beginning to arrive. The sheep sell generally about $1.00 a hunred lower than the wool sheep of the same grade and lambs ll.Oix&l.io lower.
