CHICAGO, April 2. Higher prices for wheat at Liverpool and an Increase In the available supply In this country offset today the effect of favorable weather for the new crop and caused a moderate degree of firm ness In the local market. At the close the May delivery was up 4c. Corn showed a gain of He. Oats were c higher and pro visions were up 2Vtf7Vcc The market opened steady, but com menced to weaken during the i at hour on free selling by pit traders and commission houses. The favorable weather in the south west and reports of probably Increasing re ceipts In the northwest dispelled the early firmness and prices dropped somewhat. About the mlddlo of the session the pre vailing acDtinMioCi agaUirfaworeii tilgh prices, chiefly because of a strong close in the Liv erpool market. Throughout the remainder of the day the market held Arm. a decrease of 812.0H0 bu. In the visible supply furnishing additional' strength to prices. The close was firm w(th prices almost at the top. The May option opened a shade lower to VtlWu higher at T7Hr77V, ld off to 77f77so, ad vanced to 77c. The close was at 77VaT7c. July ranged between 7tHe and 77'fcc and closed with a net gain of Mc at 7S'fti7c. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 131.000 bu. The umount on passage In creased 1,232.000 bu. World s shipments for the week were 8.578,000 bu., against .362,X)0 bu. for the previous week. Primal y receipts were 871.("i0 bu., against 7O6.0nn bu. one year ago. Minneapolis, Dululh and Chicago re ported receipts of 6K1 cars, against 675 curs last week and 531 cars one year ago. Clear weather and the easier tone In wheat caused a slight decline In corn at the opening, l-ater, however, the market became quite firm on covering by shorts. Hulllsh sentiment was sustained by firm ca bles and a decrease of 2.221, ocO bu. In the vlslblu supply. The market closed firm. May opened unchanged at 44lc. sold off to 43'c and closed at 4lc, the highest point of the dny. Local receipts were 2)0 cars, with 8 cars of contract grade. Oats opened easier, but subsequently re gained all of tho early Iobh. The early weakness was due to selling caused by ex cellent weather conditions, and the rally later in the day was brought about by the purchases of n prominent long. The May option opene." unchanged to c lower at 3tVi30'ic to 30c, sold off to V and closed at 307; c. the highest point of the dsv. Ixw-al rcelnts were 1W cars. Trading In previsions was quiet, but the market was ft n all day. Small receipts of hogs and higher prices for them were the chief causoa of the firm market. NEW YORK, April 2 The sctlon of the stock market today was accepted as a demonstration of confidence on the part of the speculative element, which embarked on the long side last week In the strength of thi lr SHisltion. That position was main tained today and prices ndvanced briskly with more show of breadth and animation In the trading than at any time since the movement began. The aggregate trans, nctlnns for the day rose to over 1.on0,0"0 shares, for the first time In several weeks. last week's Improvement In the market resulted In attracting a considerable In crement of outside interest which offered an advantageous movement for some profit taking, which was manifest during the first hour of the market. The manner In which this was absorbed apparently gave satisfaction to the speculative party and operations on the long side were then renewed with considerable Increase of vigor. The movement was still largely professional, but the success which at tended it and some of the developments In the day's situation wbji regarded as Justi fying the speculative position and In creased the confidence of prevailing opin ion. The money market showed relaxation, ns was expected, the call loan rate being held at the 6 per cent level from the opening, except for a late flurry to 30 per cent, when the day's borrowing was mostly completed. Discounts were marked down at Ixindon. Paris and Berlin, and foreign exchange yielded here, but the prhe of gold advanced In Ixindon and sterling exchange declined at Paris. Compilations of new capital Issues made here In' March showed a total of less than Uno.ono.mu, compared with $277,M)0,OUO In February and $122,114,0tiO In January. This decided shrinkage Is the natural response to the torpid state Into which the bond market has fallen as a result of the large Frevlous additions to the supplies offering, n the same connection several offerings made within the last few davs bv railroad companies of note issues with authorised bonds as collateral, are attracting atten tion. This was a device resorted to by he rallronds on a large scale during the last previous period when the bond Issue became unsalable. The dissolution last week of the Pennsylvania convertible bond pynil'i-Hte formed to underwrite the $100.- OOO.oi u issue a year ago was reported to have resulted In tho distribution of 40 per cent of the Irsue unsold to Its members. The liquidation of this bond In evidence, today was considered to be a consequence of the dissolution of the syndicate. Bonds were slightly irregular. The market as a whole was In fair shape and not very different from the close ol last week. Beef steers were In fair demnnd. but the fact that Chicago was wiring k7,0uo re ceived, with only the best grades steady dud others lower, did not help the situa tion any at this point. Such cattle as buy ers especially wanted sold at aliout steady prices, while It was rather difficult to se cure tiiie as good prices on some loads ss last week. The trade might be summed up as slow, with the best kinds steady, witn an easier tendency on others. The demand for desirable Kind- of cows and heifers was quite brisk and sellers found little difficulty in securing steady to strong prices for anything answering to that description. Common to medium kinds, as has been the case for some time, were not very brisk, but pretty much everything changed hands In reasonable season. blockers and feeders of good quality were In demand at fully steady prices and the dosen or fifteen loads on sale changed hands quite early. There were a number of loada of very ordinary stuff In the yards which did not move oft very reaany, the demand at the present time being confined largely, to weu-Drea sum.
