March 27. Buying by several men who had out extensive short llns held the local wheat market compara lively ateadv today, despite lower cables and continued favorable weather for fall sown wheat. At the close the May option showed a loss of 4c Corn was down hrtt lo. Oats were off o. Provisions wore - 10c to 2no lilirher. At the opening of the session sentiment In the wheat nit was somewhat bearish and the -Initial quotations showed llarht- declines, the May delivery being off H'fr'Ac, at 77Wg77Hc. The chief factors contributing to the easier feeling in the market were a decline at Liverpool, the mild weather throughout the wheat sec tion 'Of the I'nited States, liberal receipts at Minneapolis and the Weekly foreign I'ton reoort. which aave a generally favora ble outlook for wheat crops of foreign countries. The moderate decline brougnt about covering by several shorts, who took In heavy lines of wheat, and the market more than regained the early loss. Trad ing dragged somewhat during the remain der or the session, until near tne ciose, when the May option sold off from 7sy,c demand rather than to any heavy selling '. pressure. A decrease of 421,000 bu. In the world's visible supply compared with a decrease of 2,806,014) bu. for the correspond ' Ins week last year, as shown by Brad streets. Induced some selling by pit traders. The market closed fully steady, with May at 77Sffnic The July delivery ranged between 77V4i?74.o and TiTic and closed un changed, at 7714c. Clearances of wheat and Hour" were equal to 77,000 bu. Primary receipts were 400.000 bu., compared with 366,000 bu. for the corresponding day one year ago. Minneapolis, uulutn and Chi cago reported receipts of 347 cars, against 3X2 cars last week and 230 cars a year ago. There was persistent selling In the corn market all day by commission houses and cash Interests. J tils (act. aided by a de- cllne at Liverpool caused a weak market throughout the session. The principal de mand came from shorts. The market closed easy. May opened Siftc lower, at H3r, sold between 43Vc and 4TWM and closed at 43Vf)c. Local receipts were 463 cars with 24 cars of contract grade. Oats were weak all day on selling by commission houses and cash dealers. The chief Incentive to the selling movement was the prevailing mild weather. Mav opened Hdic lower, at H(?i;4iio, sold on . to and closed at sue. Local receipt were jfu cars. Provisions were active and strong. There was good general demand for all products - and a local packer bought lard freely. The . . reasons for the excellent demand were heavy shipments of meat and laid and a 10c advance In the price of live hogs. At the close May pork was up 25c. at 116.57',. READING RAILWAY LEADS THE DECLINE Disagreement Bet tree a Mlsfr aad Operators the Asslaaea (' of Ike arlllnat neat. NEW YORK, March 27 Yesterday's Up ward fnovement or prices was reveieed in tne ttwK market today. The nominal ground lor the change In the course of tne market wss todays disagreement between tne coal miners and operators at Indian apolis. The outcome ot the conference has been closely forelold, however, thet it Is doubtful wnethertodny'B action left sny Important steps to be taken by the holders of stocks as a consequence ot the coal tit uatlon. The more probable explanation of the price movement and the one generally accepted was that yesterday's purely pro fessional operations had failed to induce any following outside the circle of traders, as signally as the less Important operations of last week's drilling iiiarxet. 'I he large traders who dipped Into the market yes terday, while they gave more force to tne movement than has been recently seen, were disinclined to follow up the move ment In the entire absence ot any outside participation of the market. A large majority of the first transac tions this morning were at prices un changed from last night. With the demon, stratum of this Inertia of the market It was not. long before the stock purchased yes terday began to come back tor sale. When the board room traders thought that they detected the source of this selling as Iden tical with the buying of yesterday, tne bullish sentiment quickly flattened out. The general list merely followed In the wake of the Reading movement. That stock waa heavy from the outset, but Its decided break on the announcement of the rupture of negotiations at Indianapolis gave a de cisive course to the whole list. The selling was not pressed urgently oeyond the resi tting on yesterdays purchases and the market showed symptoms of dropping back Into its state of seml-stagnatlon. 1 he an nouncement of the Increase In the dividend rate of Anaconda Induced some buying of Amalgamated Copper and caused quite a brisk rally in which the metal stocks shared largely. Buying for london account was a teature of the parly dealing and served as a drag on the fall In price. This was a factor In the further decline In foreign exchange. Discussion continued of the likelihood of further gold engagements, but 110 definite announcement was made. The call money market was tranauil today and rates for time loans were quotably lower In spite of the approach or the April 1 requirements. Dividend and Interest dlsdursements for that period this year are very heavy and much in excess of the same period In pre vious years. The banks also appear to be losing rush, the loss to tne suntrsasury since Friday having risen to 31,846.000, against a gain for the same .time last week of 31.2K5,0i0. The subtrea.f ury was also a creditor at the clearing house again this morning. Shipments of money by the local banks to outside money centers In prepara tion for the April 1 settlements are said to be on a liberal scale. New York exchange at Chicago slipped back to a discount to day, against par yesterday. Last prices or stock were above the lowest 01 tne day, but the closing tone was easy. CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning numbered only a few over 200 cars, which was rather a meager run as compared to r-nrreannntllna davs of MeVlOUS weeks. there having been 276 cara here one week ago. The market on beef steers waa In a good healthy condition nnd generally satisfac tory throughout. At the opening buyers were Inclined to bid, it anything, a llltle lower, but the trsde finally settled down Into a steady mnrkel, on which basis everything desirable sold and In reason able season. Cows and heifers seemed to be In very rond demand and the desirable kinds were, If anything, strong as compared with yes terday, and th tiH-dium kinds were at least steady. The offerings of cow stuff of all kinds were practically all taken some time before midday. The run of stockers and feeders waa quite large, there being an especially large number of westerns, mostly Wyoming. The market did not show any material change, prices being generally lust about steady. The cattle of this kind have been coming In pretty fast this week, and as the yards are In exliemely bad condition owing to sloppy weather, the feeling did not appear to be any too strong; in rsct, speculators are, ir anything, mora in cllned to sell than buy. At the same time, prices were no higher, being generally only steady with yesterday.
