Visitors to Atlantic City during the coming
season will have an opportunity of ex
amining one of the most artistic adaption,
of concrete work to ha found anywhere,
and the largest example of reinforced con
crete In 1h United States.
The building In question la 12S feet wide
by 828 feet long and Is eight and twelve
stories high. In almost every instance
where reinforced concrete has been used
In a building of this magnitude It has
been In the walla and floors, aa an adjunct
to a steel skeleton supporting frame work.
In this latest achievement In the use of
cement, the usual steel frame-work has
been replaced by columns and girders of
reinforctl concrete.
The walls are built of concrete and hol
low tile. The floors are carried by con
crete joists which support a solid slab of
concrete Imbedded In what are mere hollow
tile. The Cement Age In an editorial com
ment upon this building declares that its
fireproof qualities, economy In first cost,
rapidity and noiseless construction, pres
age a new era In building construction.
The exterior of the building Is finished
In light-colored plaster, decorated with
colored Moravian tiles and mosaic and dull
glazed green terra-cotta, which gives an
aspect of airiness and lightness appropriate
to a summer watering place.
The dimensions of the building and Its
architectural lines, surmounted as It Is by
a great dome, add an appearance of dig
nity not to be found In the usual hostelry
of this character. The building la sup
ported on piers of plies, some 1.800 of these
having been needed for the work. Upon
these were erected reinforced concrete col
umns, at 17-foot centers, measuring 24
Inches square at the base, and lessening In
diameter at' successive floors until a 12-lnch
section Is reached In the attic. The wall
piers are connected by reinforced concrete
beams, which, for a span of 17 feet, con
tain five bars of Vlnch n' 2-Inch Iron for
reinforcement. The completed beam is
about 22 Inches wide and 12 Inches deep.
The outer walls consist of hollow terra
cotta tiles plastered on tho inside and
outside with cement plaster.
In tho floors the construction of concrete
and hollow tile was effected by th use of
reinforced concrete girders carrying many
shallow, transverse, reinforced concrete
floor beams, in connection with 2-Inch con
crete Blabs. Hollow ttles occupy the
spaces between.
One of the advantages clnlmed for this
building Is Its cheapness of first cost re
sulting from the possibility of employing
much unskilled labor on the work. As an
example of the facility of this style of
construction. It la declared, by a writer
In the Cement Age, that practically all
the floor tiles In this Immense building
were laid by one brlcklgyer and helper.
This becomes more significant when It la
learned that the bulldlne; went up more
rapidly than if the usual steel skeleton
framework had been used. The roof con
sists of a 6-Inch slab of cinder concrete
reinforced with ',4-lnch by 1'4-tnch Iron
bars spaced at 16-lnch centers. The hemi
spherical dome shell amrmountlng tlie
structure Is of B-lnrh cinder concrete rein
forced by radls.1 and circumferential red
bars one Inch clear of the Inner surface.
Further stiffening Is effected by radial
ribs projecting on th Interior and ex
terior, these being made an ornamental fea
ture. The stairs throughout are made of
reinforced concrete slabs. Altogether the
building Is as fireproof aa modem Inge
