At the bottom a demand from shorts set In, and thla, with talk of spring wheat worked for export and strength In other grains, caused a rapid advance. May closed, near the top and So above yesterday. May corn bears have changed to the bull aide, on account of the continued light re ceipts and bad weather for movement. Cash demand waa good. The market waa strong all day. Mav cloning "ic higher and July higher. XMi waa In aplte of the fact that Armour waa said to have sold l.T0.n0 bushels May corn. tata were- strong, May gaining He and July Sc. The talk of anow delaying need ing waa partly responsible and the strength in corn partly reaponaime. During the first hour sentiment In the whent pit favored lower prices, chiefly be cause of an official forecast of rain and snow for the southwest. There was quite free selling by several prominent commie- slon houses, offerings being taken largely by shorts. Later the demand became more general on retwrte of stronger prices for cash wheat at Minneapolis and Kansas City and a report that the Argentina wheat arriving at Liverpool Is not only in poor condition, but Inferior In ; uallty. The fact that nrimarr recelots were today only 361. OliO bushels, against 613.000 bushels one year ago also strengthened the market. The close waa strong, with prices well toward the toD. TRADING SINKS INTO LETHARGIC CONDITION I nrertalatles tlTer Cool Mine Waa Con fere are and Morocco "ettle meat Maintain Their Re pressive Inflnence. KPtf Viihk March M Stocks made a stand today against depression caused by the news of the intended sin.u,uw in crease In New York central stocs. nmci forced thst security off sharply yesterday. With evidence of supporting measures In thiT market todav a considerable demand developed from an uncovered support, in which It was suggesiea mai ?""' -piessure upon t le market came largely from professional bear traders. The intimutlon from official sources ! connection with the call for authority to issue New York Central stork mat in whole amount suthorixed would be Issued In moderate Installments snd over a con slderable period In the future had some reassuring effect upon sentiment. Now York Central Itself ruled throughout the dsy below yesterday's final figure, but it was at no time as tow as me low price yesterday. The subsidence or the acut pressure agninst this slock and the deninnd from uncovered shorts In the general list gave the market Its only show of spirit. The trading sank back Into the lethargic condition which has existed for several days past. While pressure In the market met with a resistance in the form of sup porting orders, It Is equally noticeable tht anv efforts to extend the advance In price met with Increasing supplies ot siocas. This Is a condition which serves to hold pi ices In a condition of equlllhrum and to discourage speculative ventures. It Is sus pected that this purpose Is designed by some of the Important financial Interests. Speculative uncertainties over the out come of the dispute over coal miner' wages and over the Moroccan settlement were unsolved today and maintained their repressive Influence on the market. The transfer of IWi.ooo was due to measures for armv payments In the Philippines. The probability of further gold engagements for Import from Germany was discussed, but no step waa taken. The effect on senti ment was counterbalanced by the suppo sition that early remittances would be re sumed of Japanese funds from New York to Japan. The money and exchange mar keta were practically unchanged todav. The late rise of 3 In Reading decided the firm tone of the closing of the market. Bonds were Irregular. Totals 4,837 15,445 6,1170 CA'l i 'LU Receipts uf cattio tins morning numbered Its') curs, aa against loo one weed ago, loo two weeks ago unit 161 a year ugo. In other words, the receipts were un usually heavy tor a Thursday. The total for the four 'days of thla week shows a considerable gum over the corresponding period of lasi week and a still heavier gain over a year ago. One ot the results of the heavy run was seen In a lower cattle market today. Owing to the late arrival of trains, not over halt of the receipts being in sight when the market opened, the trade was rather slow and It was well along toward 11 o'clock before uny business uf consequence was transacted. When the trade was once under way the movement was freer, but It was at no tune very active, and ttiu beef steer market could bent lie described aa slow to loc lower. Cows and heifers have been In light supply all this 'week, and In consequence the market on that kind of cattle liua held up better than beef steers. Desirable cows and heifers sold freely today at prices not quotalily dltlerent from those which pre vsiled yesterday. The late trains yesterday came In pretty heavily loaded with feeders. There was a libersl supply this morning, while the coun try demand w as disappointing. The further fact that the week Is drawing to a close acted also on the bear side. The result was that feeders were generally loc lower than jestorday. Representative sales: BF.EF STEERS. Av. Pr. No. Av. While prices wero no higher, packers evidently had use for a few loads, and bought them more freely than has been their wont on many duys of late. Feeder buyers also help J out f.y taking a few loads of the com mon lo medium kinds. Altogether the mar ket was not In bad shape. Trnliis -wefj late, but buyers kept picking up the re ceipts as they came In, so that tne greater pari of the desirable loads changed hanla before midday. Quotations. Good to choice native Iambs.
