of liquidation which came upon the stock
market today served to lift the trading
out of the lifeless condition Into which It
had suna last week. The growth In the
volume of transactions, however, was
slight and the most Impressive fact about
the market was the easy way In 'Whlcn
prices vlelded under offerings that were
comparatively Insignificant In volume. No
attempt was apparent to sustain prices at
anv stage of the selling and professional
operators Interested In having the level of
values maintained were led to the discour
aging conclusion that the market waa with
out organised protection. There waa no
Important development to explain the flla

fect of the stagnant demand which became

CHICAGO, March 19. Snow In the south
west had a weakening effect today on the
local wheat market, but a lively demand
for the cash article held the May option
comparatively steady. At the close the
May delivery was unchanged from the
final quotations of Saturday. Corn was up
'4&HC. while oats showed a gain of He
Provisions were IS to 20c higher.
The wheat market opened strong, with
prices of all options showing moderate
gains. Initial quotations on May were H to
o higher, at 78 to 71o. Within the flrat
: few minutes t reached "SHSVic on ac
tive demand from shorts and commission
houses, based chiefly on an advance of A
at Liverpool. At the end of the first half
hour, however, the market showed algna of
weakness.
Max declined In sympathy, with July go
ing down, to 7KSc The extremely favor
ahle weather for fall-sown wheat In tha
southwest caused the hulk of sales. As the
session advanced the July option continued
to decline, until the price was almost lq
below the cloalng quotation of Saturday.
At the same time, however. May held
steady on a fairly active demand by com
mission' houses, based on the strength of
cash wheat at Minneapolis and Kansaa City,
At the close the May option was steady,
but future deliveries were easy. Final quo
tations on Mav were at 7S74,c. July opened
at 784iS7SHc. Bold off to 77c and closed
with a net loss of ViuWc. at 78c. Clearances
of wheat and flour were equal to 342.500
bushels. The amount on passage Increased
1.728.00ft bushels, while the visible supply
decreased 42!t.0t bushels. Primary receipts
were 571,000 bushels, against ftOn.oiXP hushela
for the corresponding day one year ago.
Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicasro reported
recelpta of R23 cars, against 67S cars laat
week and u7 cars a year ago.
Corn was atrong throughout the day.
There waa extensive covering by shorts,
and also active buying by commission
houses and cash Interests. An advance of
Vfcc In the price of cash corn, firm cables
and unfavorable weather for the movement
of the crop were the chief Influences for
higher prices. The market closed firm.

character do not entirely offset the fact of

quirements. A tendency toward contrac
tion In the volume of bank clearing In
the principal reserve cities also constitutes
a note of warning of a lull In business
activity. The persistent droop In prices
of securities la regarded In Itself as some
what ominous and as a possible herald
of less hopeful promise in the better pros
pect as viewed by Influential and well In
formed Interests whose operations are likoly
to shape the course of the stock market.
The deposition of the spokesman for the
soft coal operators wa taken a Indicating
dissatisfaction with the pollcv of conces
sion to the miners and aa increasing the
danger of a rupture of relation and a
strike. The stormy weather waa against
the operating efficiency of the railroads,
but the reported advantage to the wlntet
wheat crop of the snow covering was an
offsetting influence. Money was aomewhnt
easier In thla market today and discount
yielded In London In spite of the fact that
the final Installment of subscription to the
last Japanese loan falling due tomorrow
will make larger requirements on the Paris.
Inndon and New York markets. Foreign
exchange here yielded, but recovered before
the close. A rather feeble rallying ten
dency In the last hour of the market gave
way to- renewed decline and the market
closed weak at the lowest. Reports of
an important mercantile failure in Russia
Intensified the lata weakness.
Bonds were heavy. Total sale, par value,
$1,925,000. Cnlted States new 4s advanced
4 per cent on call.
