NEW YORK. March 1.-The sprinkling
of liquidation which came upon the stock

slight and the most Impressive fact about
the market was the easy way In 'Whlcn

l-'eatarea of the Trading and Cloalagr

CHICAGO, March 19. Snow In the south
west had a weakening effect today on the
local wheat market, but a lively demand
for the cash article held the May option
comparatively steady. At the close the
May delivery was unchanged from the
final quotations of Saturday. Corn was up

Provisions were IS to 20c higher.
The wheat market opened strong, with
prices of all options showing moderate
gains. Initial quotations on May were H to
o higher, at 78 to 71o. Within the flrat
: few minutes t reached "SHSVic on ac
tive demand from shorts and commission
houses, based chiefly on an advance of A
at Liverpool. At the end of the first half
hour, however, the market showed algna of
weakness.
Max declined In sympathy, with July go
ing down, to 7KSc The extremely favor
ahle weather for fall-sown wheat In tha
southwest caused the hulk of sales. As the
session advanced the July option continued
to decline, until the price was almost lq
below the cloalng quotation of Saturday.
At the same time, however. May held
steady on a fairly active demand by com
mission' houses, based on the strength of
cash wheat at Minneapolis and Kansaa City,
At the close the May option was steady,
but future deliveries were easy. Final quo

1.728.00ft bushels, while the visible supply
decreased 42!t.0t bushels. Primary receipts

Minneapolis. Duluth and Chicasro reported
recelpta of R23 cars, against 67S cars laat

Corn was atrong throughout the day.
There waa extensive covering by shorts,

fmm vti street than the average com
mission house contingent. Orders from this
class of customer swelled the list of sell
ing operations today and the resulting de
cline in nrlces seemed to aggravate the
disposition Itself.
News of general conditions continued very
encouraging and authorities In different
trades protest with a degree of empharla
that prospects continue brilliant for sus
tained prosperity. But the reports of tills
character do not entirely offset the fact of
the lull In the demand f if Iron for future de
livery pending the defining of future re
quirements. A tendency toward contrac
tion In the volume of bank clearing In
the principal reserve cities also constitutes
a note of warning of a lull In business
activity. The persistent droop In prices
of securities la regarded In Itself as some
what ominous and as a possible herald
of less hopeful promise in the better pros
pect as viewed by Influential and well In
formed Interests whose operations are likoly
to shape the course of the stock market.
The deposition of the spokesman for the
soft coal operators wa taken a Indicating
dissatisfaction with the pollcv of conces
sion to the miners and aa increasing the
danger of a rupture of relation and a
strike. The stormy weather waa against
the operating efficiency of the railroads,
but the reported advantage to the wlntet
wheat crop of the snow covering was an
offsetting influence. Money was aomewhnt
easier In thla market today and discount
yielded In London In spite of the fact that
the final Installment of subscription to the
last Japanese loan falling due tomorrow
will make larger requirements on the Paris.
Inndon and New York markets. Foreign
exchange here yielded, but recovered before
the close. A rather feeble rallying ten
dency In the last hour of the market gave
way to- renewed decline and the market
closed weak at the lowest. Reports of
an important mercantile failure in Russia
Intensified the lata weakness.

CAi The receipts of cattle were lib
eral thla morning, 18!) cars being reported In
the yards. At too same time other market
points were reporting very heavy receipts
and lower markets.
I'nder the Innuence of the bear news the
market here opened very slow and It was
late before any business was transacted,
buyers and sellers lieing considerably apart
In their views. When the cattle did sell
they went at prices considerably lower
than last week, it being aale to quole the
general trade 10c lower.
A few cows and nelfers that were wanted
to kill out Immediately sold early at prices
that did not look much different front laat
week The general cow market, however
waa, like steers, slow and m most cases
10c lower.
The number or stockers and feeder on
sale was not very large: at the same time
there waa a very fair demand, ao that the
desirable kinds of fending steers com
manded fully steady prices. The common
kinds of stock cattle Save not been very
active at any time within the last two
weeks.
Representative sales:

SHEEP The early 4stlmate of Sn.0"0 sheep
for the day's receipts hud a decided hertr
Influence on the market, and probably when
telegraphed out did not help st r-tiRt lif'i
other markets. As ti matter of fact there
was nut to exceed half tliet number in
sight when the market opened. Nine cars
Included in Ihe above estimate cuine In
Sunday and were only hailed fur feed,
being shipped out the same day. Anotho
twenty cars were it-ported buck oil tho
I'liion I'aclric, no one knowing when they
would arrive. In other words, there were
only about forty-four curs actually in the
barn when the market opened, which was
by no means an excessive run for a Mon
day, Every market on the map was sending
out weak and discouraging t-poits this
morning, so that the trade hete unened
very slow and the general mat ket could
safelv be called IOLh- lower. As a matter
Of fact, some sales of especially desirable
sheep may not have show 11 quite that much
decline, hut they were the exception Hint
not the rule. Some Mexican hinibs sold
as high as tn.60. They were fed !iy the
same man as Uioko which brought tf.no and
Jfi 60 last week, but were out or anothev
pen and n little lighter. Yearlings and
wethers mixed sold up to to To. Another
bunch of the ewes, which were sold at
15.26 for future delivery, were brought In
and weighed up at that price today. Right
good heavy ewes sold on today's mnrket t
