Beet sugar growers are scouring the
country in search of workers, and num
erous inquiries Hre received every day by
the railroads, which are helping procuro
these workers for the growers. This letter
from Hiawatha, Kan., was received by the
passenger department of the Union Pacific
and Is B'if-explanatory:
Received one of your South Platte valley
folders today, but I see that it Is too late for
cheap rales. Myself and family wish to
leave here for Sterling, Colo. We have a
large family of boys and girls, seven boys
and three girls. Have had no experience
in beet raising myself, hut boys have
worked on beets at Randolph, Neb. We
started for the south, but do not like it, as
far us we have traveled. We have no largo
amount of money lo invest in land, hut
principally our labor. Will you mail nie
by return mall what the fare would be
from this place to Sterling. Colo., or what
It would take lo get us all there. There
are twelve of us. There would be:

NEW CHIEF SURGEON HERE
Colonel John Van R. llotr Comes
Succeed Major Richard W.
Johnson.
Colonel John Van R. Hoff, recently chief
of staff of the medical department of tin
United States army, has arrived in the city
and Monday morning entered upon his du
ties as chief surgeon of the Department of
the Missouri. He relieves Major Richard
W. Johnson, acting chief surgeon, who re
turns to his duties as post surgeon at Fort
Ciook.
Colonel Hoff entered the army as assist
ant surgeon from New York in lkTl, ani
served during the Spunlsh-Anierican war.
He wus attached to the medical corps of
the army during the operations aguiiiRl
Piking, and subsequently was assigned to
duty as the representative of the American
army medical department with the Russian
army during Its n-iailons In Manchuria
He was appointed chief suigeon of the De
partment of the Missouri In January last,
but was prevented from entering upon his
duties under thut apisiintment pending his
report to the medical department of the
army uon the Russian army operations.
Colonel Hoff i accompanied by Mrs.
Hoff. Colonel and Mis. Hoff are for the
present quartered at the Pax Ion hotel.
