presented to the king of England, the em
peror of Germany, the czar of Russia, the

ferent parts of the world. The two copies

have already been received ut the con
gressional library in Washington, and

Mr. Bishop's will.
The editor of this remarkable work Is
George F. Kunz, the gem expert of Tif
fany A Co., who has' been engaged since
1SS6 in planning and directing the prepara
tion of the text and illustrations. Mr.
Bishop's Instructions to him were to spare
no expense to secure the most beautiful
and valuable work possible from a scien
tific, literary. artistic and mechanical
standpoint, and the success which he has
attained may be, measured . by those who
have the privilege of examining the vol
umes. They nre a monument to a single
mineral which Mr. Kunz considers In all
respects the most Intetestlng, mineral In the
world.
The two stutely folios are printed upon
the finest quality of linen paper, manufac
tured especially for the puriwsc. The llrst
volume contains 277 pages and weighs fifty
five pounds. The second volume contains
203 pages and weighs sixty-nine .pounds.
The pages measure llxl'i inches. There are
150 full page Illustrations in the highest
style of execution water colors, etchings
and lithographs, with nearly 300 pen and
Ink sketches inserted In the text. The
etchings were made by Sulpls, Guerard.
Richard. Piquet. ! Rat, Coutry and
Binillle. The lithographs are by Prang A
Co. and Forbes & Co. The water color
sketches are by Chinese and Japanese art
ists. The text is limited to a historical,
scientific and descriptive account of the
collection of Jades which the late Heber
R. Bishop presented to the Metropolitan

winter long, nor sharp weather, but they
had long floods at Connecticut which was

We never had a bad day to goe preach to
the Indians (at Newton or Natlck) all this
winter. rraid be the Ix.rd." During the
season of 1VI7, I he diary continues. "A
great sickness rpidemical did the Lord lay
upon us, that the greatest part of the town
was sick at once. Few died, but of thes
were the choycest flowers and most gra
cious saints." During the summer of 1M3
Apostle Eliot writes: "It pleased God this
spring to exerclce the country with a
severe drouth, but some were so rash as to
Impute It to the sitting of the synod."
