ONLY A FEW LEADERS ARE ACTIVE talon Paciae la Higher oa Ramora f Isapenalag Chaages gharp Rise la Blew Coyper shares. NEW YORK, Feb. 2d. Trier was another day of dull snd professional trading on the Stock exchange. Such animation as ther was In tha market was congested In few prominent stofka which have held a lead ing place In th speculation for a long time past. The strength shown by these had a sympathetic eflect on-th rest of the mar ket, but th general movement wai ex tremely narrow and sluggish. The basis of the movement was the assumption by pro fessional operators that the reactionary tendency In the market had reached It lim its, and that pricea were therefore du for a rise. Not much el waa heard of to ex plain th movement. The withdrawal from the dlrectoratea of railroad, companie of the member of one of the mosi prominent banking houses In the street waa the occa sion for much discussion, and was mad th basis for the supposition that the ex pected Important eventa in Union Paciflc af fair were to be forthcoming following upon the withdrawals. There was very large buvlng, a a matter of fact, of I'nlon Pa cific, but there was nothing authentto to show that a distribution of aurplua to stock holders was sny nearer than for n indefl nlte pa"t period. In which the stock ha been influenced by this expectation. The dragging of the discussion over the coal mining settlement was interpreted In favor of the operators, and waa used to put up Reading again. Amalgamated Copper made a moderate advance, apparently In sympathy with an TtrnrHlnrv nrocess of marking up in the quotation for the new Butte coalition in the curb market, which waa advanced rapidly from 0 to 32 bid. Th price of copper metal advanced a fraction In this market, but was weak in London, uross earnings of railroads reporting for the third week In February showed tne very nign ra- lo of Increase over last year sun main ained. owlnc to the contrast of the open winter this year and the favorable operating conditions. These report seemed to be of little effect. !nnv HttM were not chanered to any im portant extent but time loans were reported flrmlv held, sun-treasury operations navu already taken from the banks $2.437.nriO on the week, and the government Institution was a creditor at the clearing; house today to the extent of over a million dollars. For eign money markets showed no sign of re laxation, and foreign exenange nere wae held at last week's level. The condition of national banks reported to the controller on January 29 shows for tne country throughout a growtn or casn noiuinn oi nmethlnr like I4fi.000.0n0 over the state ment of the preceding November, while the growth in the loan account reacnes me comparatively moderate figure of $54,000,000. The item of due to national and state hanks and bankers has expanded upward to fl'l.OOO.OOO In the same period, t'-omparea with a year ago, however, loans or tne banks have expanded nearly 3B.wuw. while the cash account shows actual shrinkage of something less than $2,000,000. There was a reaction on proflt-taklng, but prices rose again to ahout the nest. l ne southwestern granger became stronger on reports that the southwest was selling wheat, and stocks eioseo nrm. More tnan that, several of tne trains Hint nad been reported fur tnls morning did not arrive until very late in tne uay, one big train especially being held back uy a Runlnun wreck. L'nder the Influence of moderate receipts and encouraging reports from other eeilin points the maraet on beef steers was gen erally a little stronger. While the market was late in opening, owing to the slowness of the trains In getting in, as well as to tne heavy fall of anow, the trade was laiily active wnen once under way. Tne priets paid looked a little strong as cornered with Saturday. Th advance, as a rule, was not sufficient to cut very much figure, and still mere were cases wh ne salesmen thought that they secured as iiucli as iuc more than last week's close. Cows and heifers were la very moderate supply, and wnlie the demand was fairly active. It did not appear to lie sufficiently urgent to cause any material advance In prices. Buyers, aa a rule, seemed to have made up tneir minds to pay only steady prices, and their bids generally mere mad on that basis. As a matter ol course, peo ple who bad cow on the weak close laet Saturday would see more strength In th niarket today. Blocker and feeder wer In good, activ demand and steady to a little stronger than the close of last week. Speculators wer the chief buyers and tha feeiiiig on the mar ket wu very good. Th first reports from Chicago Indicated an excessively heavy run at that point with price 10015c lower, with such news a that In hand buyer here started out very bearish, their first bids being all of 10c lower. Sellers were not in any hurry to take off. being determined to hold up the market as far as possible, and In consequence of this difference In the views between buyers and sellers th easly trade was slow snd It was late be for very much business wa transected. When buyers and sellers Anally got together the market was more active with once 6fjl0e lower than last week. In other words the hors today sold very largely at S5.90xi6.A0. as aarainst S6UKf-l0 on satttr dav. Even after the decline today the hogs sold just about the same as they did one week ago. I 7V SHEEP While receipts wer not exces sive this morning they looked large when taken in connection with the 87.CKJO repotted early at Chicago. The arrivals at this point consisted very largely of lambs, with only a sprinkling of sheep. The fart that some of the trains were late, one train being behind a wreck, helped to de lay the Hade somewhat. The cnlef cause, however, for the market being slow and draggy was the condition of eastern inHr keta. Packers seemed Inclined to go slow una were waiting until they knew more ahout the outcome at Chicago before mak ing any extensive purchases. They bought :i few sheep, or rather ewes, early in the morning nt prices that did not look so very much different from Saturday, but nothing was done with the lambs until late and when they sold it was on a basis of 10715e decline' as compared with the close or ia week. There seems to be a feeling among buy ers at all points that there are a good many lambs on feed that have got to come to market in the near future and this more perhaps than any other cause Is making them bearish, and hence it is not surprising that large runs of lambs should bring about a lower range of values. Salesmen on the other hand are advising their friends to let the stuff come grad ually, a It la ready for market, believing tnat it tnis policy is followed gluts will ne avoided and better pricea maintained.
