Ther was dealing in future on the floor of th Omaha Grain Exchange today for th first time In mor than a year and naif. Thla wn brought about by tha action of the Chicago exchange In voting a new rule raising the commission price from to of a cent per bushel. The propo sition carried by a majority of 99 vote and the rule will be effective March 1. The effect upon the Omaha commission men waa the announcement that hereafter there will be all the business possible on the Omaha exchange. They have been hand ling pretty nearly everything In options tnrough Chicago and splitting the commis sion with the brokers there. Both the local brokers and their customers decline to stand for the advance in commission charges and the result was a flocking of the brokers to the floor In the I. mrd of Trade building arid tho chalking up of option prices on the Omaha section of the board for the first time In many moons. Bids were made In some profusion for wheat, corn and oats, but there waa actual trading only In corn. Von Dorn buying 10.000 bushels of May and Jnljr, "mostly to push 'the thing along," ha aald. Nevertheless the local deal er showed great interest In the nw situation created and spoke enthusias tically of the prospects for a lively market In futures right here at home. They do not look for a great deal of activity until March l. when the new rule goes into ef fect In Chicago. Then, some of them say, they expect there will be business coming this wey Instead of the reverse, which has been the rule. The season given for the action in Chicago Is the belief or the brok er that the country Is good and prosperous and will stahd for the higher charges. There was a decided break In wheat In Chicago, but it was not noted In the local bids, which were more to strike a basis than anything else. I-ally the range of quotations was as follows: Articles. POOR BANK STATEMENT EXPECTED TODAY Hill Mocks Are Agala Higher on Prospects of aa Early Melon C nttlaaj Bond Are -Weak. til 356 tK) 24 luti 43 NEW YORK. Feb. 1fl. ProtectU- meas ures for the stock market were centered upon a few points and proved effective In arresting the decline which gained some rorre during the first hour and which wo actively renewed in the final dealings. With the falling tendency checked there was itii flclent demand from an uncovered short In terest to effect a grsdusl recovery. There was a very notable shrinkage of activity en this rally, probably more than hslf of the day's total business being completed dur ing tne nrst hour. The demand was lan guid and dropped to nothing at the higher levels on the recovery. The market for call money was unexpectedly tranquil and this had much to do with the Improvement in sentiment which brought snout tne mid day recovery In prices. Rates for call loans did not rise to yesterday's maximum and in the later part of the day fell below S per cent. The outlook for another poor bank statement tomorrow was of less effect on the market than this practical showing of earner conditions. The activity of the subscriptions for new bond Issues during the wrek gives promise of a further loan expansion by the banks. The preservation of the surplus' at anything more man a nominal ngure seems proble matical. The source of relief for the day's money market undoubtedly was by resort to forelen money markets. Rates for forelen exchange fe'l quit vlolentlv und r fie offer ings ot oankers mils and the proceeds were filaced In local loan. Both Paris and Ber In were reported to be supplying large sums, which were employed for use In the pond subscriptions making here. It was asserted also that there would be large for eign participation by direct subscriptions 10 some or tne Issues, put specific Informix tlon on this point was not forthcoming. Tho extent of the decline In foreign exchange gave rise to discussion on the nart of stock market operators of a possible Import move ment or gold. Bankers, however, gave no countenance to this supposition so far as tne immediate outlook is concerned. As a matter of fact, discounts In London and in Berlin quoted at an advance today. Time loans for all periods were nut flrmlv on a basis of fity per cent or higher, and the mantel for commerclnl paper also reflected the depletion of supplies In the money mar ket. Of the sustaining forces In the mar ket today the causes were a repetition of mose recently prevailing. The firmness in Readinsr reflected a hone. ful feeling over the prospect of a settlement or the wages dispute with the coal miners The Hill stocks went higher again on ex pectation or an early announcement of the "melon cutting." Iead and Smelting re sponded to revived merger talk. Common stock subscription privileges were hinted at to account for tne rise in New York Cen tral, hut without any official authority. The Indifference of the demand for stocks on the rally awakened distrust and holdings were tnrown over rreely again at the last causing a weak and unsettled closing. Bonds were weak. Uv4 4 4 HOOS Under the ports from other a 1 Influence of lower re selling point buyer atsrted out this morning bidding EtilOc ower for hogs. Salesmen, however, wer not very much Inclined to take off and ther wa comparatively little or no trad Ins- don on that basis. For a time the market was very slow, but later on buy ers and sellers got together on the basis of a 6c decline, at which the hogs sold freely, the bulk going at 85 SiU' STH, as against 85 .HHi.o.W yesterday. The early rrivai were cleaned up in very good season. The decline today wa only the natural reaction following the rapid advance that has taken place thla week. I 44 SHEEP Sellers were at a decided disad vantage this morning. Every market on tha map sent In opening reports of a slow and lower market which of Itself was dis couraging. But that wa not the only bear feature or tne day trade. Receipt thl week hv been liberal a compared to pre vious weeg. being far In excess of a year ago, ana pacxers. nsving Been free buyers. wer pretty wen niled up this morning, 'mat is tney were filled up to such an ex tent that they did not care to take on any thing more unless It might be something rignt good or cnoicc. I nrortunately the offerings consisted very largely of half-fat and common sheep and lambs, which have not been in good demand of late on any market. Another thing that put sellers at a disadvantage was the late arrival of trains. When it was time fur the market to open only two cars of the day' receipts had put In an appearance, which together with nine cars of mostly common stuff held over from vesterdav constituted the early offerings. The result of this com blnatmn of circumstances was a very ! nd weak market, with values tending lower. Buyers all talked that they could take on a few more desirable killers, but It was very hard to Induce them to bid on Undesirable or trashy sheep and lambs This show once more the folly of ship ping In unfinished tuff, which sell to a freat disadvantage and which tends to reak the market even on good stuiT. It might be added that the most of tha trash appears to be coming from new feeders, who, from lack of experience do not seem to realise thst the stuff is not ready for market. Because the wlil Is spread out and the sheep or lambs look well they take It for granted that they are fat and send them to market thirty days before they ought to come. If the market is to b maintained shipper must hold back every tning mat is not nnisnea. Quotations for reu s.ieep and lambs ar a follows: oood to rholce lambs.
