stocks was depressed today without show

crumbling In the final dealings. The lim
ited volume of the day's aggregate sales
Indicated that the selling presure was not
severe, but the demand was languid nd In
different to a marked extent. Even the
special stocks, which had been held oy
the continued mystery regarding alleged
Important developments expected concern
ing them, were less aggressively sustained
today, leaving the market without their
supporting effect. Speculative sentiment
was affected by an apprehension that
the available ammunition for an effective
compalgn in stocks was largely expended.
The action of yesterday's market nn the
pews of the copper settlement and the
Union Pacific dividend were cited as pretty
conclusive evidence on this point. The
continued rise In money rates also was
regarded as offering an effective check t
any animation in the speculation. The
rate for call money loans did not remain
long below 6 per cent, and got well above

CATTLE While receipt of cattle seemed
light thl morning they were twice a large
a vesterday and about th same as on
Thursdav of last week. The Quality of the
offerings averaged up very fair, thero being
quite a good many right good load of all
The lieht run of rattle yesterday, with
only moderate receipts today evidently ren
dered packers very hungry for fresh sup
plies. As a result all were out early here
and the market opened in very good sea
son. Trade was active and prices generally
iivi. higher than vesterdav. Practically
everything desirable In the way of good
beef cattle changed hands at an early
hour In th forenoon. As high as 35.45 was
paid for a two-load bunch, being the high
est price realised at this point In som
time.
Cows and heifers were in fully a good
demand a steer and the market lust as
active and all of loo higher. It did not
take btiver very long to clean up every
thing In eight. Among the offering were
some right desirable fat cow, so that sales
looked decidedly better on paper than any
day previous. One bunch sold as high a
31.50. which is the top paid for sorne tline.
Cow unci heifer are selling at the high
nolnt of the year. In fact. It is doubtful
If prices have been as high as they are
now at ny time within the last two years.
Buvers complain that while the cows are
killing out well that they are losing money
In the east, where th meat market does
not anpear to be any too Brood. fcUill the
packers keep taking everything in the way
of cows and heifers that ha arrived up to
date.-
Blocker and feeders were In extremely
liarlit stinnlv this mornlm? and the market
wa without any noteworthy feature. There
was a very fair demand and the few loads
offered changed band very' readily at good
strong prices.

HOGS Speculators and shipinrs started
the ball to rolling this morning by select
ing a few loads of such hogs as they could
use at steady to strong prices. They paid
as high as Jti.no for right good hogs. Pack
ers did not appear very anxious for sup
plies and were slow and bearish from Uie
very start. The result was that barring a
few loads sold early to the speculators and
shippers, the market was very slow and
late In opening. When the iiaxkers did
get down to business they were determined
to buy their hogs at about tint same prices
as prevailed on yesterday's weak close or a
shade lower than yesterday good time.
In other words, they wanted to buy tlteie
stuff at about 15.87 Instead of 35.86.91,
at which range the hogs sold yesterday.
Sellers made a hard struggle for steadv
prices at least and were backward about
letting go at anything less, which made
the trade especially slow, so much so that
it was late before a clearance was effected.

SHEEP Conditions in the big sheen barn
were practically the same this morning as
yesterday and everything that was said
then regarding the trade would apply

themselves as wanting some good sheep
and lambs, and such stuff as met their
ideas as regards quality sold quite readily
at good steady prices. I'nfortunately a
consiaeranie proportion or the receipts con
sisted of trash, a wa the case yesterday
and this common to medium stuff sells to
very poor advantage nn thl J market, as
well as on every other market. Holders
of lioth sheep and lambs that were off in
quality found the market sticky, with the
tendency lower, which wa the exact case
yesterday. Good ewes brought 35 30. the
same price that they have been bringing
all the week, with wether and yearlings
boucnt to arrive at u.,a.
As noted yesterday. It Is unquestionably
a big mistake on the part of feeders to
hip In immature sheep or lambs at the
present time, as they are not wanted and
have to sell at a sacrifice, whether they
are sent here or to any other selling point.
