dividend, but the conjecture up to that
time had covered a very wide range of pos
sibilities as to the rate of the dividend
and a supposed distribution of surplus In
addition. The moderato movement In the
stock on the setting at rest of all these
rumors was suggestive of a pretty thor
ough clearing up of speculative commit
ments. The action of the copper stocks on the
formal announcement of the transfer of
r . ,1 , ,-. 1 1 ,1 f thn MeiiiKA rmt,rtlea h nit the
resulting settlement of litigation also of- '
fered abundant suggestions to the specu- I
latlve mind that the mystery being cleared
from the stock deprives It of much of Its
motive power in the market. Amalgamated
Copper and Anaconda clearly showed the
effects of realizing throughout the day, al
though occasional support made their
movements irregular. The Hill group had
the continued benefit of a mystery still on,
and the smelling and lead stocks also
came under the revived Influence of the
possible wholesale merger of copper and
smelting companies, which it was hoped
was to be Included In the official announce
ment of the Montana settlements. These
movements Were of small effect, however,
on the general market, whlrh backed and
nlled with a narrow range during the day.
Tho money market, however, showed
clearly enough the effect of the large re
quirements thus to be met. The rate of
time loans for all periods up to six months
was fairly established on a 6-per cent basis
and higher rates were asked for short
time loans. Call loan rates also were
higher, ruling above 4 per cent throughout
the day and getting as high as 5 per cent.
Foreign exchange yielded sharply under
large offerings of finance bills by bankers
who placed the proceeds in tne local loan
market. The effects of the Union Pacific
dividend and the conper settlement caused
some apprehension that various other deals
have been discounted already In the move
ment cf prices. There was growing uneasi
ness also over the advance In money rates.
The market closed under pressure and at
the lowest of the day.
Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par
value, S2.735.0O0. United States bonds were
all unchanged on cnll.

U i'TLE The eltocts of yesterday's se

visible in the receipts of all kinds or siock
this morning. With the heavy fail of snow
that prevailed all day yesterday, together
with the wind and cold. It was almost Im
possible to loud stock for market. Very

was evidenced by the extremely light runs
this morning. All told, mere were oniy

tho first day that the receipts have baen

HOGS As a result of yesterday's storm
the receipts of hogs this iiinriung were
extremely light, for a WedneKday, being
about un average Monday's run. Light iu
ccipts, a very good local demand and a.
hlgner provision market combined caused
a sharp advance In the price of Hvo ho.
Willie the opening Was a little slow, owing
to a difference of opinion between buyers
and sellers, when once under wuy it was
ftilrly active at an advance ot a strong
liic. The bulk of the hogs sold al Su.Vj-tC
5.90, as ngnlnst IS.i7'tfi6.M yesterday. Yes
terday S5.7iVs was the popular price, while
today So 90 bought a good share of the re
ceipts. The top today, $'..t. was luc higher
than anything bought yesterday and the
highest price piild on this market since
August of last year, when 5lo was
touched. The close was not uulte so
strong.
Today's advance carries the market to
the highest point touched so far this yesr
and tho hignest of any month since last
August, which was the high month of lust
year.

SHEEP
Thero
was
more trash
sheep barn tills morning than hus been
seen there before In a long time. It looked
ir tne feeders Had garnered up hii tnu
poor lan.oa anil ewes that they had In
their feed lots and sent them in for to
day's market. Trash waa never known to
make 11 good market and today's experience
rurnisneu no exception to the general iuie.
What little good stuff there waa in sight
sold very readily at good, strung prices.
uootl western ewes sold at lo.Ju and west
ern lambs at S7.1.i, both lots being the same
as were here yesteruay and bringing the
same trices, as nign as .' was paid
for old wethers.
While thn desirable kinds of both sheeD
and lambs sold al practically steady prices,
as noted above, no one seemed to want tne
trasii. The result was that the common to
medium kinds of both sheep and lambs
were slow and weak from start to finish
I start to nnisn.
With buyers It did not seem to be so much
-Vcnce'was 2, ZTl
The situation In the market this morning
bears out what has been said In these
columns on a number of occasions of late I
to the elTect that feeders shnultl only send
in desirable kinds of killers and should
hold back everything else. Prices are so
high at the present time that feeders can
well afford to finish rlielr sheep and lambs
hefore trvlng to market them, and It will
be greatly to their advantage to do so, un
less all present prospects are entirely mls
leiiding. UuuLtttlons for fed sheep and lambs are
as follows: Good to choice lambs. Colo-
rados, S7.00fli.25; good westerns, Sn.75fl7.2S;
good light weight yearlings, S5.75(ti4.2.:i;
good heavy yearlings. utW6.!i6; good
