GENERAL LIST DULL AND SLUGGISH Hlll-Paelflea, Northwestern, Barllag toa aad Amalgamated Copoer Are Arlltt Higher'. and NEW YORK. Feb. 13. The violent move ments ln a few stocks today were maae to seem like a froth on the surfuce of the market, owing to the comparative slug gishness of tne general level of the mar ket The Irreeulur movement varied from low hardening to a heavy yielding, with out any large activity to account for either tendency, ueanngs, nowever, rose to over l.KH.t'io shares for the first time In over a week. The effervescence of the few active stocks had some effect in holding the general list which showed signs that it would have been heavy otherwise. The buovant outbreaks were In much the same quuitcrs in which they have previously occurred and the causes to wnlch they were attirbuted had no additions to those advanced In explanation for some time pnst. The conviction amongst speculators seemed to have gained force over the Sun day and holiday Interval that a merger or the copper properties was imminent and there semed to be a distressed short In terest, whose necessities added to the facility with which the price in that group were rushed up. Ananconda fairly reached the 3i mark and recovered again to that level the second time after th re action, thus verifying the most extrava gant predictions of the speculator In the stock. The Hill-Paclflcs and Chicago Northwestern took another upward flight on reiteration of former rumors regarding the tlevelopment occurring ln these prop erties, especially that pointing to a dls- riosltlon of th Burlington, which would nvolve the retirement of the Joint coi 'iateral bonds issued against It stock, leaving that atock a free asset for the controlling companies. The Interval since Saturday developed new proposals or confirmed those previ ously reported for many millions of new Issues, as the tino.noo.onn convertible bonds srid ny the American Telephone company the 315i.0M..ono convertible bonds offered by the Atchison company, the expected issue oy tne ine enr.re or iso.nnt.uw bonus. rumored offering by the Southern Pacific or ,onMmi, a ismisvme & ixasnvme issue still vag-uely defined aa large and the re- portca intention or tne rsew jersey runiic service corporation to Issue its 312,&MO.OOO of treasury stock. This makes a note worthy supplement to the heavy new issue announced last week and the week before. Money rates were appreciably firmer all arounn. .-sew lorK exchange at Chicago rose to ."yi cent premium and foreign ex change yielded. The offerings of finance bills ln New York, however, were the principal factor in depressing foreign ex change. Renewed anx'ety over the Mo roccan conference and the legislative measures ootn in Pennsylvania and Wash ington looking to inqulrv Into the coal carrylne- mllrods were not helpful to the sneciilation. There wore some extraor dinarily fa vorahli' statements of gross earn ings by railroads for the first week of February, ranging from an Increase of 18 per cent by Wabash up to 36 per cent for Northern Pacific. HOGS The upward movement in the hog market which has carried values to a point that is fully Sf higher than the first of the month still continues. At th opening this morning th market was not verv much higher, but by the time buyers and seller got down to business it was a strong be higher. On this basis the most of the hogs, at least the most of the earlv arrivals changed hands. As will be noted from the sales below the hogs brought largely So.754j6.80, as against S5.7o6.7S yes terday. The top, 35 85, was 10c higher than Monday' top. After the more urgent orders were filled there wa some disposi tion on the part of buyers to act a little bearish, but the strong provision market and with heavy snow falls reported from different sections of the country, which are name to reduce receipts ln the near future. It was impossible to make much Chang in the morning prices. Representative sales: No. 71.. S . 77.. 15... II.. 77.. to., tt.. 5.. 55.. n . .. .. 114. 74.. Lnrortunauiy a number of the train did not arrive until late, ow ing probably to the severs storm. The de lay in the arrival of the stock made the market somewhat later than it would otherwise have been. With a very heavy wind and snow storm , prevailing an tne forenoon, whlrh made it ' almost impossible to see across an alley and which aunln' -ml humped up the cat tle, it waa no matter to tell just what the market .Tig. in fact, no two salesmen looked upon it Just the same for the reason that It wa very' difficult to Judge of cattle under the prevailing condi tions. As a result some were calling the maraei nikner. wrille others were oti ni 1. .... .. - decidedlv lower. It mnniH k. .i.r. ! '-1 Mexican laml.s however, by all concerned that consider ing the kind of a day and the very heavy receipt that the market wa In verv fair condition. Cows and heifers seemed to be In verv gooa cemana in sp;te or the storm heavy receipt. Possibly the fear on part of buyers that receipt would he off by the storm may have had someth 10 an witn tneir anxiety to secure a supply today. However, it may have been the market on cow was reasonbly active at good, stesdy to strong prices. Fortunately, there were not verr many stockers and feeders In the yards. The word fortunately is used because there is no kind of cut tie that ells to as poor ad vantare durlne a heavy storm as stockers and feeders. The few here, owing to the very fact that the cfferlngs were so light sold not materially different from vester- SDite Of the fact that hovers 01 o i-uuipiuimng mat prices on sheep and lamb are higher here than at other mar ket Kint on the river and higher in pro portion than Chicago, there wa still fur ther improvement this morning. Buvers were all out early and every one seemed to have orders for good sheep and lambs. 1 he result was that the early arlvals changed hands rapidly at price that were strornr to a little higher than yestcrdav. Good western lambs sold up to 37.15 with a number of double decks of good ewe at 36.30. It might be well to udd ln this connec tion that the demand seem to be very largely for the belter grades of both sheep and lambs and naturally enough any Im provement that takes place In prices I limited largely to that kind. Thl mav be taken as a warning to shippers to hold back unfinished stuff and not ship ariv thlng until it is fully matured for market. As noted esterday. this market is in n most satisfactory condition, the demand bung -fully equal to the receipts, so that the trade Is in a good hemttiv position. This is due largely to the fact that the receipis at tills point are very moderate and that there has been nothing approach- "s a Kiui iieie in a long time. yuoiaiiona lur leu 1 as follows: Good to rados, '-..5iji,.l0; geod .'c.-rna.
