speculative seniitrent was the marked fea
ture. .Excited advances on yesterday on
the Hill railroads gave place to some re
action today and prices fell back from the
lack of the stimulating Influence of the
strength in those stocks. Some depression
was reflected from the London market
owing to a revival of apprehension over the
outcome of the Moroccan conference.
The narrow prufesslonai character of
the market was demonstrated by the de
mand to cover shorts after the appear
ance of the poor bank statement, which
disclosed the origin of the early selling
of bear operations. . Developments in the
banking situation indicate substantial
ground for the conservative spirit felt In
the stock market. The decrease In the
surplus reserves of the banks by about
one-naif to less than $4,0uu,vu0 Is Itself a
showing of the narrow margin for ex
pansion of banking credits for which the
uetnand continues, as shown by the week s
Increase In the loan item of $4,K12.100. The
decrease in cash of $6,297,000 reflected not
only the known movement of currency for
the week, but the carryover from the
statement of the week before, which failed
to show the full flecrease. Arrangements
have been made already for the shipment

CATTLE It rs rather monotonous to be
compelled to repeat every Saturday the
statement that there are no fresh receipts
of consequence and no market, but auch
waa the case today, and such is the case
every Saturday, the last day of the week
having become, to all intents and purposes,
a holiday so fur aa the cattle trade Is con
cerned. The few cattle here sold at prices
nominally steady with yesterday.
Receipts of cattle this week show a slight
gain over the previous week and an Increase
of 2,000 head as compared with a year ago.
In other words, there has been a good lib
eral run of cattle this week. .During the
first three days the tendency of values was
steadily downward. Beef steers were
quoted weak to 10c lower on Monday and
lower again on Tuesday. In addition to
being lower the trade on those days was
slow, and to that extent at least unsatis
factory. Commencing with Wednesday the
market began looking upward and prloea
became a little stronger each day until the
close of the week. In fact, Wednesday's
market was generally quoted as 10c higher,
Thursday's market strong to a little higher
and Friday's market close to 10c higher.
At the close of the week It Is safe to quote
the best corn-fed cattle 1620c higher, .with
other grades as much as 10&16c higher. A
feature of the trade that has been espe
cially pleasing to sellers Is the increased
activity manifested during- the last half of
the week.
During the early part of the week the
market on cows and heifers eased off some
what ln sympathy with the decline on fat
cattle, but later on the loss was recovered,
so that good to choice grades of fat cows
and heifers cloned the week 10tfi15c hlarher.
I The common to medium grades have not
been very much sought after and are enow
no more than steady with the close of last
week In fact, some would say that they
are if anything a little lower.
Stockers and feeders have been in good
demand every day this week, with good,
strong prices prevailing all the time. This
has been due largely to the fact that the
supply of such cattle has been small, while
there ras been a good country demand.

NEW YORK, Feb. 10 Announcement
was made today that the Southern Railway
company has decided to ask the stockhold
ers to authorise an Issue of $200,000,000 de
velopment and general mortgage 4 per cent
bonds. Of this amount $16,000,000 will be
Issued Immediately for refunding and equip
ment. After provisions for various obliga
tions are made there will be left $99,834,000.
which will be used to provide for future
acquisitions and betterments.
Smallpox In a Prison.
PITTSBURG, Feb. 10. A convict In the
Western penitentiary has been attacked
with smallpox. The patient has been Iso
lated In the Infirmary and every precau
tion ts being taken to prevent a spread of
the disease among the 950 Inmates of the
prison. All prisoners have been vaccinated.
Sanitary conditions In the 'penitentiary are
considered almost perfect.
