LAhGE SELLING ORDERS FROM THE WEST Prospect of an ExteaslTe Strike Among Coal Operators Aronaes Anxiety of the Spec, alntore. NEW YORK, Feb. 3. The speculative position In the market developed acute weakness again today and prices yielded easily through the list. Deen Inroads e.,ere made in the case of some of the speculative favorites. The nominal motive of the selling was the danger of a strike of coal miners which Is brought to the attention of speculators by the rupture of negotiations for a settlement between th miners and operators at Indianapolis. Apprehension over the outcome was fed by private advices from western sources, accompanied by large selling orders from the western speculative element. The taking of steps toward a strike in tha New Y'ork building trade increased the In fluence of the consideration given to the labor outlook. The st nsltlveness of the market to these developments in view of the public re ports of the progress making towards them was proof of the vulnerable position of the speculation due to the satisfaction of the demand for stocks from the short in terests following the sharp reaction of the etirly part of the week. The weak bank return also was unforeseen and an element In th" weakness of the stork market, al though the bank return was not Just what was expected. The 31,129.600 decrease In cash was much less than expected, but the expansion of the loan Item by 318. 2M.SHJ in the face of the large liquidation supposed to have taken place In the stock market was a disappointment. The net result was to decrease the surplus reserve if'til by 34.7u2.225. The yieluing of foreign exchange rates and a rise in sterling exchange at Paris carried conditions away from the gold ex port point. The adoption of a measure by the French deputies authorising an In crease in the note circulation of the Bank of France was a bearing on the outlook for the movement of gold. The Hank of France has refrained from offering In ducements for securing gold in the recent past owing to the fact that the authorized limit of its note circulation had been reachi d, leaving It no advantage from an Increase of gold holdings. There were some rallies fiom the lowest prices of the day. but the closing tone was unsteady und showed some important losses for the day. Total sales of bonds par value, 31,506,000. The total receipts this week have been allghtly larger than for the previous week and larger than a year ago by over 3,000 head. In spite of this Urge run the market has been In very satisfactory condition. Fat cattle began the week with a steady market and good kinds were steady on Tuesday, with the common kinds slow and easier. On Wednesday, under the Influ ences of moderate receipts and a good, active demand, values firmed up and were generally quoted a little better than the previous day. This upward movement was continued on Thursday, when salesmen pretty generally quoted their sales as strong to 10c higher. With no material change in value during the last two days of the week It follows that prices are now just about loc higher than a week ago. The cattle on an average have not been any too good In point of quality, but still there were a few good enough to bring 16.50, showing that really prime cat tle will bring high prices. What has been said regarding the mar ket on fat steers would apply in the main to the cow and heifer market. As waa the case with fat cattle, cows and helfeis be gan the week about steady, eased off a little, only to strenpthen up nsaln later on. so that at the close of the week they showed an advance if about 10c, the same as steers. Stockeis and feeders have alio been vry good sellers all the week and have been In excellent demand for tMs season of the year. Prices during the nrst lalf cf the week were very string, but. as Is apt to lie the case with this k)nd of cntt!e. es pecially when receipts are running we!' ut with the demand, the market eased off somewhat toward the litter ran of tne veek. At the close of the week It is rlliR cult to distinguish any very marked differ ence In values between now and a week ago. Representatives sales: COWS. No. Av. Pr. ,. This has been a week Of extremely light sheep receipts, the total bslng less than half what it was for tlie previous week and a little more than half the receipts of a year ago. This listht run has been due entirely to the efforts of com mission men and newspapers to keep down the receipts at this point on account of the limited demand. Had all other markets rollowed the same policy prices for the week would unquestionably have been maintained, but in spite of the fact that the eastern mutton market was badly de moralised shipments of sheep and lambs were encouraged at some points, with the result that those markets broke and car- - wnii mem me markets at other points.
