INTEREST IN GLNERAL LIST WANES Amalgamated Copper, Creat Northern, I nlnn I'aclflc and Southern Iron Cironp Are the Leaders. N EW TORK, Feb. J -The feverish ac tivity In a tew stocks today tended rather to obscure the diminished speculative mar ket as a whole. Such a falling off in inter est, with a wavering of prices, usually fol lows a period of speculative readjustment like that which has occurred this week. The fore d liquidation In the early part of the Week offered attractive opportunities to an eager bear party, which sold stock on the decline with great freedom. Their necessary buying oierations to cover were a strong factor In the raliy and the uncer tain tone of today's market was a fair In dh itlon that these operations had been pretty well completed. Such speculative interest as there was today concerned Itself almost entirely with merger projects In all stages, from the vaguest rumors to defined and detailed statements of alleged terms. Some sort of combination amongst the recently contend ing copper Interests Is commonly accepted as an accomplished fact. Enormous In dividual transactions In Amalgamated Cop per both on the buying and on the selling sides had a rather formidable effect on sentiment and seemed to be an Influence on the heavy tone of the rest of the market. There was u wealth of detail of assertion also regarding tho terms of the supposed disposition of the Iron ore lands owned by the Great Northern Hallway company. The supposition petslsts that a deal with the United States Steel corporation for this purpose is Involved, although the president of the Great Northern is reported us deny ing the assertion. A movement In Great Northern has a natural effect on Union Pa cific, owing to the large holdings of that stoik which accrue to the Union raeiftc treasury from the Northern Securities set tlement. The southern Iron group also made a vivid response to revived merger stories. The character of these advances seemed to be regarded with some distrust and other stocks were sold. Reading was effected by the seeming deadlock In the ef forts at a settlement of the wage dispute between the coal miners and operators. The hank statement outlook probahlv had some depressing effect on the general' mar ket. The tone of the call money market held quite firm, but this was supposed to be due to the passing effpet of the first of the month requirements. With the Indicated loss in cash, however, and the possibility of a considerable further loan expansion the outlook is for a poor bank statement to morrow. Rates for foreign exchange were maintained and It is still considered prob able that gold will go out. Yesterdav's enormous corn export, which reached the record figure of 8.a!.3T.a bushels, indicates the sources of tho free supply in the for eign exchange market. The general list made some recovery from the declines and the closing tone remained Irregular. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value. $3.17l.'lO United States 2s, coupon, advanced 4 per cent on call. The following was the ran ire of quotations on the New York Stock exchange: Bales. High. Low. rtnse. Only about one dozen loads of beef steers, with some few odds and ends, were on stile. While the supply was very light, the demand did not appear very brisk, as some of the heaviest paclters seemed to be filled up for the week and not In need of any further supplies. There was, however, some little Inquiry, and with so few cattle in sight salesmen were enabled to unload at prices Just about steady with vesterday. There was no especial snap or life to the trade and the market as a whole was with out a noteworthy feature. Cows and heifers were also in light sup ply, there being not over twenty loads on sale. As was the case with lieef cattle, some of the packers seemed to he filled up and were not on the market, so that the trade was not active, but still prices were Just about steadv with yesterday, at least on all good kinds. Where a salesman hap pened to have something that did not find favor In the eyes of buyers It was a little slow work unloading. Aside from a few odds and ends there were no stockers and feeders on the market of any consequence. As usual at the end of the week there was also very little de mand and still buyers took what few there were at steady prices. Representative sales: HKEF STEERS. No. AT. Pr. No At. Soon after market firmed up SJid became 6'yii'c higher, tho hogs selling freely at en tlUjlru.oO. Borne of the hogs sold as high as 45.55. After the more urgent orders were filled the market slowed up and half or more of the early advance was lost. From that time on the market became very slow- and dull under the Influence of the bear tacllcs, followed by some of the heaviest packers. The close was very slow and weak. There Is nothing new to be added to what lias already been said in these columns regarding the situation In the sheep market. The change to somewhat cooler weather yesterday and today has given rltse to hopes that tne east may be covered by a cold wave, which would have a tendency to improve the mutton market. At the present time all that Is necessary, upparently. to place the sheep und lambs market on a good basis Is a normal consuming demand from the large eastern centers. l.'ntll there is a radical improvement in the eastern mutton mar ket sheep men do not look for much change in the market on live sheep and lambs and would continue advising moderate shipments.
