Half a doxen times or more durlna the day the current I of the market changed its course. Neither . declines nor advances were long pursued. I Transactions were large In a few active i stocks, but the conntant fluctuation had the effect of unsettling speculative senti ment and discouraging attempt to read thu temper of the market.. The general list was comparatively dull in consequence 1 and simply moved In sympathy with the . wider movements of the npeculatlve favor- i Res. It was said that some very large transactions on either side of the market In , the promlnnt active stocks were closed out within a brief time. Inference was drawn from these events that floor traders wen I making up the market to a very larpe . extent and that the principal operations originated In the board room Itself. The important factors In the movements of the day were made up almost alto- ' gether of rumors of vague suppositions i few of which were confirmed by the event or by any authoritative announcement Great play was made on the assumption that negotiations were In progrms for :i rettlement of the long-standing disputes in the copper trade which would do away with the expensive litigation ami costly rprlnals which have charactried this trade war. The coppers opened, both on the Stock Exchange and in the curb mar ket, with a continuance of the upward rush In force at the closing last night. Tha abrupt reactions due to the heavy unload ing which met these advances dashed the speculative confidence. The repents were revived In all their variety, Including an alleged plnn for a wholesale merger of copper, smelting, mining and lesd com panies. Reading was another active cen ter of speculation and moved as uncertainly as the coppers. Its early decline was con nected witii the tone of the published re marks of the president of the I'nited Mine Workers on the negotiations for a labor settlement. The market control of the stock was again asserted In the buoyant rebound. The circulation of a report that a congressional resolution was In prospect for Information on the I'nlon Tacinc con trol of the Southern Pacific on the mum lines as the Pennsylvania railroad Inquiry was responsible largely for the early heavi- ness in mat group. inn nnnnsejitrn rri. :P; ducks. 114jl2c; geese, HJ10O. In I fset. there were reslly not enough here I either of sheep or lambs to make a market ' sold at rriees not materially different or to establish quotations, and it seemed more like a Saturday than a Thusday s market. The local market Is In a good healthy condition, but the weakness prevailing at eastern points, especially at Chicago, gives the market at all other points a very weak tone. For reasons best known to them selves Chicago commission men and news papers sent out reorts at the close of last week that brought a flood of sheep and lambs Into the market Monday, with continued heavy receipts ever since. The result of this was to weaken the market there, nnd this weakness has spread west ward 10 tne river markets, j No. 64 native ewes 1 23 native lamb It6 western lambs 1C1 western lambs Av. ...116 ...133 .. 7J .. 72 Pr. 8 26 7 00 60 6 60 CHICAGO LIVE STOCK MARKET Ca4(le and Hoars Steady Sheep ntid Iiinb Slow.
