NBTW YORK. Jan. 24 Speculative buying came Into the market again this morning In a flood and put an end temporarily to the downward course of price which unsettled the early market yesterday. There was heavy unloading again before the closing which was weak. There was not an entire cessation ef selling to realise profit on a heavy cale at any time, but the stocks In which realising was most conspicuous yes terday were opened at higher prices, and with this advantage to start with they had some margin to spare for reaction without being carried back to below last night s level. The complete restoration of wire o .nmunicatlon with the west was given It si, are of credit for the revived speculation. But the technical condition of the market waa much improved by the liquidation ef fected yesterday. With the weak committment for - the rises taken out. with the large profit on hand In the present powerful combinations which precipitated the reaction, with their realizing a lower level of prices to attract a re-entry Into the market at a profit and with the bear account considerably ex tended on the short side to offer potential support by their necessities to buy stocks to cover contracts, the market was In better position to resume the advance than It was able to continue It by the reaction. Toe conspicuous feature of this situation was the marked preference shown for stocks of the cheaper grade, both among the railroads and Industrials. Tbtal 3.&M 11,787 t640 CATTLE The receiple of cattle this morning were smaller than yesterday by about fifty cars and smaller than a week ago by over thirty cara. The quality on an average waa not fair aa and hardly up to yesterday's standard. Owing to the more moderate receipts, as well as to a good, active demand, the market on fat cattle opened with a de cidedly better feeling. The trade at first was a little slow, owing to the fact that sellers were pricing their holdings at good, stiff prices, while buyers did not appear anxious to put on any great amount above yesterday's prices. When once under way. however, the trade was fairly active at prices that were steady to a little higher than yesterday. The desirable cattle among the offerings were nearly all disposed of In very good season In the forenoon. Cows and heifers were also in good de mand and they sold In about the same way as fat steers that Is, the market was rea sonably active and generally a little stronger than yesterday. Uuyers all seemed anxleua tor a few loads of good killers and It did not take' them very long to clean un the bis bulk of everything tn sight. There has been a good deal of sameness in the market for stockers and feeders for a week or ten days. Tha supply hus been light and the demand very gooa every dav. Conseauently the market has been In a good, healthy condition from day to day, prices being quoted strong all the time. This morning furnished no exception to the rule. There were, however, a few more rattle of that kind in sight than haa been the case on a good many days, but the supply was none too large to meet the requirements of buyers. Everything desirable changed hands by 10 o'clock in the morning. Among the offerings were some very good Wyoming range cattle which brought $4. 40, the highest price paid on this market for feeders for some time back. No 107 i'4 2 48 r o 70 47 Z7 60 7r 118 4T4 10. At the opening the feeling was decidedly better and every one was looking for a strong market at the very least. In fact, buyers picKea out a rew loads that just happened to suit them at prices that looked better than yesterday or the day before. Later on It became apparent that the demand was not as urgent as It might be and the trade became slow. Chlrago helped along the weak feeling by reporting a lower mar ket at thut point. The result was that in stead of being strong the market st this point turmd out to be slow, closing off lower than yesterday. While a third or more of the receipts changed hands very early In the morning It was late before a clearance was effected. In other words, It was Just the kind of a market to disappoint Sellers.
