NEW TOR1C. Jn. a.-Th miked opera
tions cf new speculative buying In the
stock market and heavy selling to resllss
firoflts accrued went on side by sids todsy
n much the sains way as for seversl days
past. But the Selling to reslise effectually
overbore the new buying. When the bear
traders perceived the tendency of things
they attacked the market with great vigor
and their raiding tactics succeeded In un
covering targe stop loss orders placed by
peculativ holder below th market in the
fear thst condltlona were booming un
stable. With the reporting of stop loss or
dei -. declines beame quite precipitate and
tne tone more decisively reactionary tnan
for a long tlm past.
The scion cf the market had to oo n-
tir!y with technical conditions ana ume
sttention was paid to any news develop
ments. Th enormous liquidation In th
pat few dav. and especially that of yes
terday, has resulted In such large reduction
of concentrated holdin- af stock ss to
tie the hands of ths organised speculators
who hsre been able to control with such
skill the feeling of the market in such a
mi ss to save prices from damage. Th
sessions of th market were largely given
to con lecture concerning the Identity f
individuals or parties woo wr doing the
prlnrrfal selling. Conjecture pointed pretty
clesrly to quarters which havs been cred
ited with operations leading to some of
the most notable advances of the last few
da vs. It was concluded, therefore, that a
putpoee to sustain the market agalr.st sell
ing to take profits was th motive of thee
ad'-snces rather than any developments
regarding the value cf th properties. The
lack of anv news of such developments
aggravated 'the distrust in the movements
and fostered a conclusion that some of the
upward spurt of recent days were due In
effect to the transfer through the market
cf stocks from one hand to the other or
which the total Issue were in practical con
trol alreadv of the operators. There was
a growth of sentiment sure to be sroused
at tbe time of reaction in the atock market,
that the unvarying course of prosperity,

CATTLE Receipts of cattle were consid
erably larger than expected this morning
and larger than any day since Wednesday
of two weeka ago. The receipts were made
up almost entirely of cattle shipped In for
beer. totn steers and cows. The trade as
a whole was nor in any too good snape.
the general situation not being as favorable
to th selling Interests as yesterday.
Th trad on beef steers waa alow to
open, owing to the fact that with a good
many on aal buyers seemed to feel like
taking their time tn filling orders. Hence
it was lste before they got out into the
yard a and still later before they got down
to business after they did get out. First
bids were generally lower than yester
day, and. although sellers seemed de
termined to hold on for steady prices,
they could not make it. The trade finally
developed Into a slow and weak t) 10c
lower market.
Cows and heifers wer tn very Isrge sup
ply, there being not far from seventy cars
cf thst kitid of cattle tn eight. Buyers fol
lowed the same tactics as did the steer
buyers thst Is. they hung off and did not
make a etsrt until lata, and even then
they did not move very rapidly. The re
sults were the same as with steers, the
market being slow to luc lower, snd it was
very late before very much business was
done
Blockers and f-eders were in very light
supply, and aa there was the usual good
demand "he trade was quite brisk and

HOGS Receipts of nogs were quit lib
eral, there being 14 cars reported In. The
market, while it opened IV higiier on an
average than yestetday s market, was not
to th liking of sen era The trade was
slow at tne advance and some of the
heaviest packers held bark and wouid not
psy It. This mesnt thst as soon aa som
of the more urgent orders were filled snd
before a good many salesmen had a ehanc
to unload the market weakened off and be
came very slow and dull at no better price
than yesterday. It looked very much as if
some of the heaviest packers were acting
on the bear side, with th Idea that price
re already high enough, or else they were
looking for 1 reaction In the market- What
ever mv have been the cause. It was evi
dent that some of the buyers had orders
lo pay no more than steady prices It was
verv 1st before a clearance was finally
made.

SHEEP Receipts at this point were very
moderate this morning for a Tuesday, lit
tle more than half the number of sheep snd
lambs being reported In todsy tnaa were
here yesterday Ths quality was on an
average about the same as yesterday that
is. made up largely of unfinished stuff,
with only a sprinkling of right good loads.
There wa a very fair demand this morn
ing for desirable fat sheep snd th market
on that kind waa reasonably active at
prices that did not show sny material
change as compared with yesterday. Good
yearlings sold up to . and right good
ewes aa high as tS. The common and
medium kinda of sheep snd lambs were
rather slow sale and while perhapa they
were no lower they certainly were no
higher: on th contrary, the feeling was
if anything weak.
While the market was not parucuiany (
active at anv stsge. It waa sufficiently so
to effect a reasonably early clearance The
market as a whole was not in bad shade, but
it m-miM imniiMiiAMhl-r be better If there
were not so msny common to medium kinds
of half-fat sheep and lambs coming for
ward. . .
