Provisions were a shade to 10c higher. Paralysis' of the telegraph service be cause of the sleet which descended upon Chicago last night demoralised traue In all thx. grain pits, and business was of an exceedingly small volume. Trading was confined almost exclusively to local opera tors. Sentiment In the wheat pit at the opening was bullish because or the firm tone of ther Liverpool cables. InLtlal quota tions on May were up a shade to SVc at 8TVfr7V'. World' shipment were about Uii'.uiO less than have been estimated and this created a moderate demand. During the first half hour offerings were light and price advanced. May Belling up to 87Sc. tauter a reaction took place on selling caused by a report that the drouth In India had been broken. This carried the price of May down to 7UiC. On active covering by shorts who were Influenced by a predicted cold wave the market re gained nil the toss. PROFIT TAKING ON LARGE SCALE ALL DAY Volsmr of Transactions howe Some Shrinkage Dae to laterran tloa of Order from West. NEW YORK. Jan. 21-The market gave triktng tvidence again today of breadth and strength notwithstanding the continu ous prom-taking on a very large scale. there wa a auggestion of the large pro fessional share In the market In tne sys tematic way In which the selling to real! profits waa conducted and In the solicitous regard to the eftect on prices from this sell ing. The same thing was suggested by the sudden way In which strong stock moved upwards, being galvanised by the passage of enormous orders through the market on a very large scale. The volume of tiansactlons showed some shrinkage from Ust week's average of daily transactions. This waa attributed In part to the Interruption of wire communication with the west. A rery large participation In thu present market la supposed to be duo to western operators and the decrease In activity througn cutting off of communi cations with them was regarded as prob able. There was, however, some uncer tainty aroused In speculative opinion by the very obvious way In which heavy hold ings of stock were fed out to meet the growing public demand. It was not until the more general advance of the latter part of the day that thla feeling showed sign of being dissipated. The violent ad vance in one or two stocks recurring for some time past have given rise to a feel ing of anxiety over the possibility of a coiner which might bring the advance In the market to an abrupt end, aa was the case at the time ef the Northern Pacific corner. Anaconda and Reading are the took especially pointed to by conjectures of this kind. When they fell back during the morning dealings the effect was bene- I flcial on the rest of the list. The con- aerva4lve views reported In the directorates aome of the companies whose stocks liavf. Iwnn limnnuil to have nrosoect Ot early dividend lncreaae served as a curb to the violent speculation In some of these, the American Locomotive stocks being a notable example. United States Steel seems to be restrained by the uncertainty over the company's policy regarding an early resumption of dividends. Union Pacific and Amalgamated Copper were the notable centers of prollt-taking, Southern Faciflc taking up the advance. St. Paul, on the other hand, continued an aea-resHlve advance berun Saturday and re ports were In circulation that the plan for financing Its Pacific coast extension would soon be announced. Growing atten tion I attracted by the succeeding an nouncements of new issues of capital and the comment Is made that suctt a ten dency Is likely to prove a feature In the future of the securities market. Railroad officials were strikingly unanimous in their report of an easing or tne car situation all over the country. The change in con ditions was attributed to the remarkably favorable weather for operating than to any decline In traffic. The movement of gold to Mexico wa re sumed and a new explanation was sug gested In the assertion that the shipments were in reality for account of Pans and designed to meet the coinage requirements of the French government for silver. For eign exchange today wa strong. The sub treasury continues to contribute large sums to the money market and money rates con tinued easy. The news of the coming re demption of t&0,ouo,000 of the Japanese In ternational loan Is of future consequence to the money markets In which the large amounts of Japanese funds are on de posit, Including New York. The renewal of. heavy realizing in Union Pacific and Amalgamated Copper and the 6-polnt spurt in Reading helped to unsettle the late mar ket and the closing waa very Irregular and feverish. Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value, $6,370,OuO. United State bond wore un changed on call, The following were the quotations on the New York Stock exchange: Sales.Hlgh.Low.Cloee. Adams Ex Amal. There were not. In fact, hardly enough hogs In sight lo g,i the rounds and make a killing for the differ ent housca. This almost always means a dull market, as buyers will not get out and fight for the receipts when thev are so light as not to be worth the trouble. This morning was no exception to the rule, and though the market was 24i5o higher. It was slom- at the advance. More time wa con sumed In selling the slty cars here than It takes many times to dispose of twice that number. Of this number fifteen cars were billed through, but they were still In the ard:. so that they added to the number In sight. The most remarkable !.lng about the sheep market this tnornlrg was that with all the sheep and lambn reported In there were so fe that were rall good and well Pnlshed killers, the rieat big bulk of the arrival consisting of what buyers call trash. Now and then there wit a good load or two, but they were few and far apart. It was evident right from the start that buyers had use for really desirsble fat sheep and lambs and It was not much trouble to unload anything answering to that description at prices thai were sieaay wlth the close of last week. The common to medium kinds were not much sought after and were slow sale. Holder of uch had to put a good deal of work oil them In order to unload. So much has been said In these columns about the Inadvlsahlllty of shipping Im mature or half-fat sheep or lambs that it hardly seems necessary to add anything more along that line. Still feeders are pouring too many of that Kind Into all the markets of the country and are weaken ing prices even on the good kind.
